Assessing Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Community Composition And Diversity Across A Land-Use Gradient In Eastern Washington Prairies, Katherine I. Cole

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key to healthy, functioning terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Associating with over 80% of all extant land plants, they play a pivotal role in nutrient cycling, and contribute to overall plant health. Given their significance to terrestrial ecosystems, AMF have a crucial role to play in the successful restoration of Eastern Washington’s native prairies. However, AMF community composition is significantly altered by the commercial agricultural practices used extensively in this region for over 100 years. The Eastern Washington University (EWU) Prairie Restoration Project aims to restore ~120 acres of farmland to native prairie. This research provides insight …

Myosins produce force and movement in cells through interactions with F-actin1. Generation of movement is thought to arise through actin-catalysed conversion of myosin from an ATP-generated primed (pre-powerstroke) state to a post-powerstroke state, accompanied by myosin lever swing2,3. However, the initial, primed actomyosin state has never been observed, and the mechanism by which actin catalyses myosin ATPase activity is unclear. Here, to address these issues, we performed time-resolved cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM)4 of a myosin-5 mutant having slow hydrolysis product release5,6. Primed actomyosin was predominantly captured 10 ms after …

In 2018, the U.S. government levied tariffs affecting more than $250 billion of Chinese products. As a result, many American buyers began turning to alternative suppliers to avoid the significant new costs associated with purchasing from China. Recent research found that transactions between U.S. buyers and Chinese suppliers fell by more than 18% immediately following the start of the trade war. However, the study also found that not all companies were affected equally: Chinese firms that were more innovative or more socially responsible were more likely to retain their U.S. buyers, while buyers were more likely to distance themselves from …

At Barton Creek Technologies, Anna Chen, the chief human resources officer, faces a dilemma over the company’s performance improvement plan (PIP). Introduced as a supportive tool to rehabilitate struggling employees, the PIP has widely become perceived as a punitive mechanism. An internal audit revealed that only 15% of employees placed on PIPs complete them, while 60% are terminated and 25% go on stress-related medical leave, often not returning. Managers admit they lack the training to implement PIPs effectively, and employees describe the plans as stigmatizing and demoralizing. Chen is torn between reforming the program into a mentorship-based system—requiring significant investment …

Dirty Hands, Savage Enemies, And Bad Apples: A Taxonomy Of War Crimes Apologia, Jessica Wolfendale Jan 2025

Dirty Hands, Savage Enemies, And Bad Apples: A Taxonomy Of War Crimes Apologia, Jessica Wolfendale

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we detail and critique dominant narratives of war crime apologia. These narratives portray the circumstances of a war crime, the perpetrator’s character and motives, and the broader context in which the crime occurred, in ways that minimise or negate the perpetrator’s moral, and sometimes legal, blameworthiness. In section one, we identify and critique three broad categories: (1) individualising narratives (‘uncommon practice’), (2) excusatory narratives (‘essence of war’), and (3) justificatory narratives (‘tragic necessity’). Drawing on a range of real world examples, we outline the features of these narratives and the underlying theory of moral responsibility and blameworthiness …

Understanding The Effects Of Platelet Transfusions In Neonates, Robert W. Maitta Jan 2025

Understanding The Effects Of Platelet Transfusions In Neonates, Robert W. Maitta

Faculty Scholarship

Platelet transfusions represent a common life-saving intervention used in intensive critical settings to treat neonates with thrombocytopenia, at risk of or actively bleeding, or undergoing clinical complications that make transfusions part of the management. Even though it is intended to help restore hemostasis in patients, platelet transfusions can, under certain circumstances, lead to negative effects, greater inflammation, and rarely increased mortality. It is the occurrence of these unforeseen and yet to be defined transfusion-associated complications that are at the center of a renewed effort to identify those factors increasing risk or that make a subset of patients more likely to …

Oral Anticoagulation In The Era Of Continuous Rhythm Monitoring, Chu-Pak Lau, Hung-Fat Tse Jan 2025

Oral Anticoagulation In The Era Of Continuous Rhythm Monitoring, Chu-Pak Lau, Hung-Fat Tse

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Background

Primary prevention of stroke using oral anticoagulants (OACs) is indicated for clinical atrial fibrillation (AF) documented on standard electrocardiogram (ECG) in those patients with a high risk of stroke. The recent availability of both external ECG monitors (either using consumer electronic or medical devices) and implantable devices have enabled earlier AF episodes to be detected before clinical AF become manifest. These episodes, often termed subclinical AF (SCAF), represent an area of controversy for the application of OAC.

Objective

The present review summarises the management of SCAF, based on recent guidelines and publications in the following areas:

  1. In the presence …

Review Of Asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White (Wpw, Ventricular Preexcitation) In Children, Sabrina Tsao

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

The increased use of screening electrocardiograms has led to more incidental findings of Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern, an abnormal ECG pattern. Asymptomatic WPW refers to patients with an abnormal ECG but no cardiovascular symptoms. The prevalence of WPW syndrome in childhood is estimated at 0.4-2.2 per 1000 individuals, with a higher incidence in males. Most patients have normal cardiac anatomy, but up to 30% of infants with SVT and WPW have associated structural heart diseases. WPW can also be linked to a familial form associated with glycogen storage disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. There are four types of arrhythmias associated with WPW …

Will Conduction System Pacing Replace Biventricular Pacing For Treating Heart Failure In Patients With Wide Qrs Duration?, Chan Yat Sun Joseph

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Conduction system pacing CSP) is an emerging therapy for resynchronization of patients with heart failure and wide QRS duration. It has been proposed to replace cardiac resynchronization therapy with biventricular pacing (CRT with BVP) mainly because of shortcoming of CRT with BVP including failure to implant coronary sinus leads and unsatisfactory response in certain subset of heart failure patients. The current evidence for CSP in heart failure patients with wide QRS duration is reviewed and the gap in evidence in supporting CSP to replace CRT with BVP is discussed.
