Teaching Foundational Mediation Principles In A First-Year Lawyering Skills Program, Pamela V. Keller

This article asserts that foundational mediation principles and skills can successfully be taught in a first-year lawyering skills program. At the University of Kansas School of Law, we have included an instructional mediation module in our first-year course for many years. The module contains substantive instruction on alternative dispute resolution, active learning exercises, a mediation simulation, and a reflective oral report. Our module could be adapted to other first-year courses or to upper-level experiential and doctrinal courses. Critical feedback, especially among peers, is difficult to give well but can be taught. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Negotiations teachers can not only teach negotiation and facilitation skills affecting substantive outcomes but also equip students with the confidence and competence to engage well with critical feedback—a skill readily transferrable into any conflict resolution context. In this study, the author engaged a classroom intervention designed to improve peer feedback quality in an undergraduate negotiation course. Biology

Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells differentiate into oligodendrocytes, which myelinate axons during development and following demyelinating injury. However, the mechanisms that drive the timing and specificity of developmental myelination are not well understood. We hypothesized that oligodendrocyte progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation would be affected by pathological neuronal activity during adolescent development when developmental myelination is occurring and that this would also impact neuron-to-oligodendrocyte progenitor cell connectivity and myelination. We used kainic acid to induce a seizure in mice, treating equal numbers of males and females, in sample sizes of at least five animals. We found that the seizures led to increased …

Background/Introduction: Employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction/experience are largely correlated and when one declines, evidence suggests that the other will be affected similarly (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). The Great Place to Work (GPTW), a nationally recognized designation, is measured using a standardized, commercially available staff survey to evaluate nurses’ satisfaction throughout the project site organization (Boo, 2024). External evidence supports the use of telehealth for obesity management, as it can increase access to care and promote weight loss. Incarcerated individuals have a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the general population and face unique challenges in managing their condition. These include limited access to nutritious food, disruptions in the healthcare continuity, and socioeconomic barriers such as unstable housing and unemployment. Upon release these challenges can compromise glycemic control.

The Transitions Clinic Model supports formerly incarcerated individuals in managing chronic conditions, including T2D during their reintegration. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that predominantly affects people of color. Our program, Stronger Than Sickle Cell, is focused on raising awareness and promoting community engagement while collecting resources to support Sickle Cell Disease research and treatment. The program will take place during the National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and will include a fundraiser called “Change for Change”, an awareness campaign with school assemblies and posters, and a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is abundant in Canada but is widely considered an underutilized species. This study was aimed at evaluating the potential of using aspen lumber to produce cross-laminated timber (CLT), glued-laminated timber (glulam), and wood I-joists. The key mechanical properties of these engineered wood products, which were fabricated using a modified grading criterion, were examined. It was found that 1) The mean effective bending stiffness and characteristic bending moment resistance of 5-layer CLT specimens in the major-strength direction were 5,069x10⁹ N·mm²/m and 97.65x10⁶ N·mm/m; 2) The mean apparent MOE and characteristic modulus …

The competitive push for business schools to publish in prestigious journals has resulted in a disproportionate number of papers in prestigious Management and Operations Research/Management Science (OR/MS) journals coming from a select group of institutions. Our analysis shows the Matthew effect of prestigious journals favors established schools with 51.2% of papers in 18 Management ABS 4* journals and 61.3% of papers in 3 OR/MS ABS 4* journals involving authors from the 100 top business schools identified by the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Citation patterns are similarly concentrated among papers authored by scholars from UTD-listed business schools, with nearly …

Continuous monitoring of patients' health facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the quality of health care, that is, the ability to access effective care. However, AI monitoring often encounters resistance to adoption by decision makers. Healthcare organizations frequently assume that the resistance stems from patients' rational evaluation of the technology's costs and benefits. Recent research challenges this assumption and suggests that the resistance to AI monitoring is influenced by the emotional experiences of patients and their surrogate decision makers. Despite increased acceptance and legal recognition of queer identities in Western societies within the past 25 years, there remain stark differences in representation of LGBTQ+ voices between white and nonwhite communities. Particularly within Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) communities, this underrepresentation is exacerbated by societal pressures to adhere to strict heteronormative, gender-stratified roles, with little room for deviation from the norm. Of the incarcerated people in this country, more than half are parents. When the state imprisons a parent, what happens to their children? Tactics of surveillance, racial profiling, and even violence are used by police to monitor innocents based purely on their religion or race. The Kurdish community in Binghamton is one of the area's largest and most diverse populations. This study looks into the reasons for Kurdish flight from their home countries to the United States, and the effects of Middle Eastern political and economic crises on Kurdish resettlement. To gain a deeper understanding of the community, the primary method of research utilized was conducting interviews with Kurdish residents of Binghamton. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder where red blood cells (RBCs) become rigid and sickle-shaped, causing vaso-occlusive crises and severe pain. SCD affects 100,000 Americans, with about 1 in 13 Black babies born with sickle cell trait (SCT). Using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) via IPUMS, this study analyzed SCD patients aged 0-19. Cross tabulations, ANOVA, and General Linear Model (GLM) analyses assessed hospitalization rates by race, age, and health status. Black/African American children had significantly higher hospitalization rates. Infants (0-2 years) had the highest hospitalization rate (mean = 1.37), while early childhood (3-6 years) …

The results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election came as a shock to some but on par with world trends of backsliding democracy and the spread of competitive authoritarianism. When considering authoritarianism on a micro level–the way authoritarian tendencies manifest in everyday life–the paradoxical relationship between authoritarian rule and lower-class support becomes more prominent. The interdependent relationship between the two suggests a dangerous future for working-class Americans, where economic and nationalist policies come at the cost of a dismantled democracy. In 1970s Mexico, the PRI secured working-class loyalty by promising living improvements and promoting mobilization through state-sponsored organizations, suppressing any …
