Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Dynamic Response In Web Application Honeypots, Luke Constantino Jan 2025

Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Dynamic Response In Web Application Honeypots, Luke Constantino

Honors

This research quantifies the effect dynamic response has on the effectiveness of web application honeypot systems. While much academic effort has been directed toward honeypot development, few scholars have measured the effect of various honeypot tools and compared them against each other. This research measured the effectiveness of honeypot dynamism through a standardized experiment between a Tanner/Snare honeypot system, a Glastopf honeypot system, and a static honeypot system. Using the T-Pot framework, this study analyzed the duration of attacker engagement and their actions across various honeypots. Results show that the Tanner/Snare honeypot engages attackers in a fundamentally different way than …

China Vs Democracy: The Strategic Use Of Cyber Influence Campaigns, Alexander Deak Jan 2025

China Vs Democracy: The Strategic Use Of Cyber Influence Campaigns, Alexander Deak

Honors

The People's Republic of China (PRC) has increasingly expanded its cyber influence campaigns against democratic states. Scholars largely agree that these campaigns align with the PRC’s broader goal of regional and global hegemony and that the PRC employs a range of cyber strategies to target democratic rivals. However, little research has examined what drives the PRC to adjust its online influence operations. This paper addresses that gap. Specifically, I compare the PRC’s cyber influence campaigns between two democracies to identify the demographic factors shaping its strategic choices. Using a comparative case-study approach, I analyze the PRC's influence efforts in Canada …

Acting Quickly: Determining Urgency In Phishing Messages, Patrick Rau Jan 2025

Acting Quickly: Determining Urgency In Phishing Messages, Patrick Rau

Honors

In the modern cyberscape, phishing serves as a useful means for attackers to gain access to their victims. Creating the best phishing message is a sophisticated art form, with one common tactic involving asking the victim to follow through on an action with great haste. Through the utilization of sentiment analysis, or weighing how much of a certain emotion is conveyed in text form, classifying this sense of urgency becomes relatively trivial. The research done in this project attempts to create a working machine learning model that can categorize the urgency value of a body of text. The data gathered …

Cold War Karl Mundt: The Utility Of Anticommunism During The Eightieth Congress, Wattier Zachary Jan 2025

Cold War Karl Mundt: The Utility Of Anticommunism During The Eightieth Congress, Wattier Zachary

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines South Dakota House Representative Karl Mundt during the Eightieth Congress and his role in helping to build a movement and consensus over domestic and international communism. I argue that not only did Mundt help facilitate the Second Red Scare that allowed for the “McCarthyism” of the 1950s to thrive, but Mundt also aided in selling a combative diplomacy towards the USSR which intensified relations into a Cold War. As a ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Mundt advocated for the use of soft power, education, information, and propaganda to sell his idealized Americanism to …

“We All Agree That The Best Thing To Do Is Be Kind To Ourselves”: Emotionally Reflexive Reorientations Of Childcare During The Covid Pandemic, Mary Holmes Jan 2025

“We All Agree That The Best Thing To Do Is Be Kind To Ourselves”: Emotionally Reflexive Reorientations Of Childcare During The Covid Pandemic, Mary Holmes

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

In the face of a crisis like COVID-19, people in the UK mused on how they felt and how to care, including how to care for children. This musing can be understood as emotional reflexivity: which means reflecting on how to feel and how to use those reflections in our emotional practices. I illustrate emotional reflexivity at work in 47 volunteer writers’ responses to the Mass Observation Project’s special COVID directive in March 2020. It asked the writers to share their experiences as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. They did their emotional reflexivity with other people and sometimes reoriented caring for …

Child Protection And Disability: An Anti-Oppressive Reading, Susan Flynn Dr Jan 2025

Child Protection And Disability: An Anti-Oppressive Reading, Susan Flynn Dr

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Existing research alludes to complex inequalities within child protection systems for disabled children and disabled parents. An established risk of maltreatment that is higher for disabled children than for majority population peers converges with intersecting inequalities in the child protection arena. These include discrepancies around professional responses and service outcomes. Practice shortcomings, under-resourcing, practical impasses and knowledge deficits are also an enduring concern. Further, inequalities in child protection service outcomes and involvement for intellectually disabled parents are well documented. Thus, child protection and welfare casework with disabled children and disabled parents is fraught with complexities. This is due to the …
