Knörr Lattices For Elementary Abelian Groups Over Unramified Extensions Of Z_P, Marie Swartz Jan 2025

Knörr Lattices For Elementary Abelian Groups Over Unramified Extensions Of Z_P, Marie Swartz

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, we examine the existence of positive height Knörr RD-lattices for D an elementary abelian p-group and R an unramified extension of the p-adics Zp. Knörr lattices form an important subclass of the absolutely indecomposable lattices and have close connections to modular representation theory’s “local to global” behavior. We generalize many prior results, shown only when p = 2, to odd p when |D| = p3. Further, when p = 3, we show that a positive height Knörr RD lattice must have a projective summand when restricted to any maximal subgroup of D. The proof of this requires …

Applications Of Bayesian Functional Data Analysis, Zhexuan Yang Jan 2025

Applications Of Bayesian Functional Data Analysis, Zhexuan Yang

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is a statistical approach used to analyze data that vary across a domain, such as curves or functions. This dissertation investigates Bayesian Functional Data Analysis (BFDA) through three applications. First, we explore the use of BFDA in outcome-dependent follow-up (ODFL) studies. After conducting simulation studies, we apply our model to cardiotoxicity and kidney function data. Second, we extend BFDA to genetic data by modeling DNA methylation levels with a three-parameter skew-normal distribution and an alpha-skew generalized normal distribution. This study also introduces a novel Multistage Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MMCMC) method with the goal of identifying …

The Fiction Of Possibility: How Possible Worlds Theory Explains The Impossible Worlds Of Science Fiction, Jacob Burlingame Jan 2025

The Fiction Of Possibility: How Possible Worlds Theory Explains The Impossible Worlds Of Science Fiction, Jacob Burlingame

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the ways that science fiction texts convey to the reader the worlds in which they are set. It identifies four main strategies through which a science fiction text conveys its world: Neologisms, Secondary Texts, Actual-World Analogs, and Exposition. Neologisms include any words that are coined by the author to describe an entity that only exists in the text world, which creates a fuller world by creating a referent for them. Secondary Texts are any other documents alluded to by the primary text, whether created for the text world or imported from the actual world; these secondary texts …

Covariance Matrix Forecasting Of Equity Portfolios, Michael Nebor Jan 2025

Covariance Matrix Forecasting Of Equity Portfolios, Michael Nebor

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two papers. The first paper introduces DCC-SVR, a hybrid Dynamic Conditional Correlation (DCC) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) method of forecasting the covariance matrix. This paper shows that DCC-SVR is able to outperform the traditional methods of DCC and rolling historical on multiple data sets. Performance is shown for both standard GARCH and GJR-GARCH methods. This paper also analyzes performance when dimensions are increased to 49 dimensions and when an application using equal weighted portfolio allocation is used.

The second paper introduces a covariance matrix forecasting method based on copula-GARCH simulated returns. The accuracy of this …

Functional Characterization Of The Hdt5 Gene In Aspergillus Flavus Morphogenesis, Mycotoxin Production, And Fungal Phytopathogenicity, Brenda Omburo Jan 2025

Functional Characterization Of The Hdt5 Gene In Aspergillus Flavus Morphogenesis, Mycotoxin Production, And Fungal Phytopathogenicity, Brenda Omburo

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The present study aimed at elucidating the role of hdt5 in fungal morphology, mycotoxin production and in plant virulence in Aspergillus flavus. Currently, methodologies to prevent the negative impact of A. flavus are insufficient. It is known that expression of the hdt5 gene is dependent on hbx1, a master regulatory gene that affects expression of hundreds of genes in the A. flavus genome, controlling both development and secondary metabolism. However, while the aflatoxin gene cluster has been elucidated, the genetic regulatory mechanisms controlled by hdt5 are not fully understood. For this study, therefore, a complete strain set composed of a …

Examining The Associations Between Parental Academic Socialization, Social Support, Academic Enablers, And Academic Outcomes In Early Adolescence, Yoonsun Pyun Jan 2025

Examining The Associations Between Parental Academic Socialization, Social Support, Academic Enablers, And Academic Outcomes In Early Adolescence, Yoonsun Pyun

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Students’ experiences of success in schools have a lasting impact on their lives. Existing literature documents parental engagement with their children’s learning is one of the key predictors that help facilitate students’ academic success. The positive association between parental engagement and favorable academic outcomes are well-established; however, studies have highlighted different types of parental engagement (e.g., home-based involvement, school-based involvement, home-school communication, academic socialization) are differentially associated with academic achievement. Further, the role of academic enabling behaviors such as interpersonal skills, motivation, engagement, and study skills in the mechanism of the association between parental engagement and academic performance remains underexplored. …

Ethnic Insurgency Of Myanmar: Resilience And Fragility, Lei Tong Jan 2025

Ethnic Insurgency Of Myanmar: Resilience And Fragility, Lei Tong

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research studies insurgent resilience in the context of Myanmar’s civil conflicts. In the face of repression, some ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) continued to mount significant resistance to the state and even grew their territorial control and capacities. Others merely survived, but lost their operational functionality, while others still were forcibly disarmed and disbanded. What explains this variation in the resilience of Myanmar’s EAOs? To answer this question, I build on conflict scholarship that highlights the importance of lootable resources to armed insurgent organizations. However, I extend this work by showing that access to resources alone is insufficient. To maintain …

An Analysis Of Mental Health And Workplace Absenteeism, Kristin Marie Vrona Jan 2025

An Analysis Of Mental Health And Workplace Absenteeism, Kristin Marie Vrona

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the effect of mental health on own health-related absenteeism among employed adults in the United States, using data from the 2010–2014 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). The MEPS uniquely differentiates between absences due to one’s own health and those due to another person’s health, enabling causal estimation of individual-level factors influencing absence decisions.

The analysis incorporates both mental and physical health measures, including diagnostic indicators and self-reported general well being, which are used as proxies for severity that may affect both diagnosed and undiagnosed individuals. Results reveal a consistent pattern: individuals experiencing high psychological distress but lacking …

Factors Related To Teachers’ Behavioral Intention To Continue Using Digital Game Based Learning To Teach Arabic, Hassan Alhashimalsayed

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the factors related to teachers’ behavioral intention to continue using digital game-based learning technology inside the classroom and how teachers perceive such tool to facilitate the process of teaching. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how the attitudinal factors of the UTAUT model (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence) and background factors (gender, age, teaching experience, educational level, teaching rank, and extent of DGBL integration) predict teachers’ behavioral intention to continue using a digital game-based learning technology in their teaching to improve their performance in teaching Arabic language to Saudi students. The study …

Water Quality And Microplastic Contamination In An Urbanizing City Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, Boonyarak Chuanchit

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Microplastics (MPs) are synthetic polymer particles less than 5 mm in size that originate from both primary manufacturing and the breakdown of larger plastics. Extensive studies have examined their occurrence in other environments, while little is known about their presence and behavior in groundwater, especially in urbanizing regions in Southeast Asia. This study investigates the occurrence and abundance of microplastics within groundwater systems of Nakhon Pathom, an urbanizing province in central Thailand.

Groundwater was collected representing shallow and deep aquifers between May 2023 and May 2025. The analyses included physical-chemical parameters, major ions, heavy metals, and microplastic abundance and composition. …

Geometric Function Theory On Uniformly Quasiconformally Homogeneous Domains, Allyson Mackenzie Hahn Jan 2025

Geometric Function Theory On Uniformly Quasiconformally Homogeneous Domains, Allyson Mackenzie Hahn

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

"

Uniformly quasiconformally homogeneous domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ carry a transitive collection of $K$-quasiconformal maps for a fixed $K\geq 1.$ In this dissertation we investigate three questions in this setting. The first is to show that quasiconformality and quasisymmetry with respect to the quasihyperbolic metric are equivalent. The second is to study normal quasiregular maps from such a domain into $S^n$ or $\mathbb{R}^n$ and determine they hold geometric properties such as a uniform Hölder condition. The third is to study preimages of a power-type mapping and show they are well-distributed in a precise sense.

Comparing Elements Of The Community Of Inquiry Framework In An Asynchronous And Synchronous Student Success Course In Nursing School, Megan Mcinnis Jan 2025

Comparing Elements Of The Community Of Inquiry Framework In An Asynchronous And Synchronous Student Success Course In Nursing School, Megan Mcinnis

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the impact of course delivery modality—asynchronous versus synchronous—on students’ perceptions of Teaching, Social, and Cognitive Presence as outlined in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. Conducted at a nursing college, the study involved students enrolled in a student success course offered in both formats. Quantitative data, using the CoI Survey Instrument, were collected through pre- and post-course surveys and analyzed with independent t tests to determine whether statistically significant differences existed within and between modalities. Results indicated that both course formats supported high levels of perceived presence across all three domains. In the asynchronous section, a statistically …

An Exploration Of Social Isolation’S Effects On The Gastrointestinal And Metabolic Health Of A Social Mammal, Daniel Adam Nuccio Jan 2025

An Exploration Of Social Isolation’S Effects On The Gastrointestinal And Metabolic Health Of A Social Mammal, Daniel Adam Nuccio

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Human health can be impacted considerably by subjective feelings of loneliness, resulting in mental illness and the dysregulation of normal cardiovascular, immune and endocrine functioning. This occurs because social isolation serves as a form of chronic stress for social mammals, spurring physiological responses akin to those associated with more standard forms of stress. On account of their highly social nature, prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) subsequently have become one of the model organisms of choice for investigating the effects of social isolation on the development of disease in social mammals.

This dissertation seeks to expand the scientific community’s understanding of the …

Efficient Algorithms For Nearest Correlation Matrix Computation With Missing Data, Ibrahim Eniola Oyeyinka Jan 2025

Efficient Algorithms For Nearest Correlation Matrix Computation With Missing Data, Ibrahim Eniola Oyeyinka

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates efficient algorithms for computing the Nearest Correlation Matrix (NCM) under incomplete financial data. Correlation matrices are vital in portfolio optimization and risk management, yet empirical estimates often violate symmetry, positive semidefiniteness, and unit diagonal conditions due to missing observations. Two projection-based methods are analyzed: the Modified Alternating Projections (MAP) and Anderson Acceleration (AA). Theoretical analysis using convex optimization and normal cone characterization supports numerical evaluation on synthetic and real-world stock-return matrices (550×550, 2020–2025). Missing data are modeled through Missing Completely at Random (MCAR) and Not Missing at Random (NMAR) mechanisms. The results show that AA converges faster …

Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Data Caching With Frontier, Alexander Rahe Jan 2025

Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Data Caching With Frontier, Alexander Rahe

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an unprecedented long baseline neutrino experiment that aims to measure various neutrino mixing parameters. With state-of-the-art technology, DUNE will measure neutrino mixing angles (θ13, θ12, θ23) and a Charge-Parity (CP) violating phase (δcp) with precision and will determine the elusive mass ordering. In order to accomplish these goals, scientists all over the world must have quick and reliable access to the data provided by the DUNE detectors. The data caching system known as Frontier is a distributed database caching system that was previously used in other large particle physics experiments for this purpose. …

Audit Culture And A Nonprofit In Northern Illinois, Onyenum Ruth Udoh Jan 2025

Audit Culture And A Nonprofit In Northern Illinois, Onyenum Ruth Udoh

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Audit culture has become a defining feature of nonprofit life, shaping how organizations balance accountability to donors with responsibility to their communities. While existing scholarship often highlights large or international NGOs, less is known about how small and mid-sized nonprofits in the United States experience these pressures. This study focused on nonprofit in DeKalb County, Illinois, to examine how audits, donor restrictions, and accountability demands influence nonprofit practices, priorities, and relationships with their communities. Grounded in ethnographic fieldwork and organizational anthropology, I conducted eight weeks of participant observation and semi-structured interviews with seven staff across leadership, finance, program, and administrative …

Occupational Choice And Social Mobility, Samuel Solomon Jan 2025

Occupational Choice And Social Mobility, Samuel Solomon

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines how individuals make occupational choices and how that shapes economic success, social mobility, and the labor market.

The first chapter uses population-wide administrative data from Finland to examine the underlying drivers and aggregate implications of occupational following—when children enter into their parent’s occupation—for the labor market, social mobility, and total output. I first document that occupational following is a widespread feature of the labor market. Second, I show that pre-labor market multidimensional skills and educational choice statistically explain 19% of following among all 43 two-digit occupations, and 53% among white collar ones. Third, I use an instrumental …

Betwixt And Between: Restorative Justice, Dei, And Education Carcerality, Thalia Gonzalez, Alyssa Faith Scott Jan 2025

Betwixt And Between: Restorative Justice, Dei, And Education Carcerality, Thalia Gonzalez, Alyssa Faith Scott

Faculty Scholarship

American K-12 public education is at a critical anti-civil rights inflection point amidst a rapidly changing landscape of federal and state education law and policy. From local anti-literacy measures to state “three strikes” exclusionary school discipline legislation to punitive federal executive orders, new legal mechanisms are conjoining to produce public school climates marked by structural violence, and the erasure of students with multiple marginalized identities. Attending to these political and legal realities is a growing cluster of legal scholarship empirically categorizing, and theoretically challenging, the rise of such anti-education civil rights obstructions. Though diverse in scope, analyses prominently center the …

Probing Non-Perturbative Qcd With Jet Substructure Measurements At Star, Youqi Song Jan 2025

Probing Non-Perturbative Qcd With Jet Substructure Measurements At Star, Youqi Song

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In high-energy particle collisions, when incoming quarks and gluons (partons) exchange a large momentum during scattering, the outgoing partons undergo parton showers by primarily radiating off gluons successively. Hadrons are formed when the parton energies are sufficiently low. The collimated sprays of particles created through this process are called jets. Studies of the internal structure of jets, known as jet substructure, can provide insight into Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory that governs the interaction between partons and their formation into hadrons. In this thesis, I present two sets of measurements of jet substructure observables that are sensitive to the theoretically …

Virtual Currency As Real Currency, Jeffrey A. Maine Jan 2025

Virtual Currency As Real Currency, Jeffrey A. Maine

Faculty Publications

Convertible virtual currency is increasingly equated with the notion of real currency. Indeed, the increased acceptance of virtual currency as a payment method among retailers and consumers, the evolution of new types of virtual currency that alleviate price volatility, and the recent expansion of foreign country initiatives confirm the strong trajectory toward virtual currency’s function as a transactional currency. Yet, the tax system continues to classify all forms of virtual currency as “property,” and not “currency,” which results in immediate taxation every time someone buys something with virtual currency. This Article argues that the adopted tax treatment of virtual currency …

Co-Parents With Benefits, Jessica Feinberg Jan 2025

Co-Parents With Benefits, Jessica Feinberg

Faculty Publications

The relationshipbetween individuals who share a common child merits significant legal and societal attention. An increasingly high percentageofchildren are being raisedby parents who are not married to each other, and modern social science research demonstrates that the quality of the relationship between co-parents has serious implications for children's well-being. When co-parentage is unaccompanied by marriage, however, the law historically has attachedfew, if any, rights and obligations to the relationship. This historical disregard for the relationship between non-marital co- parents fails to promote children's best interests. Children whose parents are not marriedto each other should not be excludedfrom the benefits that …

The Dynamic Integration Of National Culture In Organizational Structure For Entrepreneurial Success, Qianyu Lim Jan 2025

The Dynamic Integration Of National Culture In Organizational Structure For Entrepreneurial Success, Qianyu Lim

Senior Honors Theses

The impact of culture on management decisions has been heavily researched and discussed in the academic setting. However, the tools and frameworks currently applied in cultural studies present a static version of culture at a certain point in time. As entrepreneurship and its counterpart, intrapreneurship, arise to help create competitive advantage in a quickly shifting economic market, these points raise the question of the opportunity surrounding the consideration of culture as a living model in an equally dynamic business environment. To do so, a reiterative version of Bain’s Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm will be used to illustrate the impact of culture in …

Bytes, Banter, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Account Of Objective Meaning, Cameron Bonin Jan 2025

Bytes, Banter, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Account Of Objective Meaning, Cameron Bonin

Senior Honors Theses

The claim that the Bible has objective meaning is contested in a postmodern world. This claim can be more persuasively defended when it is addressed by insights from multiple disciplines. In particular, the field of computer science is apt to illuminate the concept of meaning through its reflection on the nature of languages and its concern with the accurate transmission of information. By synthesizing insights from the field of computer science, such as that of Claude Shannon, with Nicholas Wolterstorff’s use of speech-act theory, the concept of meaning can be understood more clearly. Consequently, this synthesis assists in answering questions …

Perspectives On Demyelinating Disease: An Overview Of Multiple Sclerosis, Nathaniel Howard Williams Jan 2025

Perspectives On Demyelinating Disease: An Overview Of Multiple Sclerosis, Nathaniel Howard Williams

Senior Honors Theses

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of central nervous system (CNS), primarily concerning oligodendrocytes, the myelinating cells of the CNS and the neurons that are ensheathed in myelin. MS is the most common demyelinating disease, affecting as many as 300,000 yearly in the United States alone. Much debate centers on whether MS onset is primarily caused by autoimmune reactions or intrinsic dysfunction in oligodendrocytes, which prompts an immune-mediated response. Those who review the current literature on MS may become quickly overwhelmed by the volume and variety of available material. The purpose of this review is to present a …

Communicating The “Already, Not Yet” Through The Visual Arts, Hadley Jacobs Jan 2025

Communicating The “Already, Not Yet” Through The Visual Arts, Hadley Jacobs

Senior Honors Theses

The “already, not yet” is a theological concept that addresses the tension of Christian living. Although believers are free from sin’s power, they are not free from its effects. This thesis examines the “already, not yet” through a series: one graphite drawing, one colored pencil drawing, and one oil painting. The graphite drawing depicts a ruined building, the colored pencil drawing depicts a building being rebuilt, and the oil painting depicts a restored building. They represent the fallen state of man, the state of believers on earth, and the state of believers after being restored, respectively. Together, these pieces create …

Cardiac Timing Effects On Response Speed Are Modulated By Blood Pressure But Not Heart Rate Variability In Healthy Young Adults, Xiao Yang, Catalina Roldan, Michael Gazzanigo, Yasmine Nabulsi, Fang Fang Jan 2025

Cardiac Timing Effects On Response Speed Are Modulated By Blood Pressure But Not Heart Rate Variability In Healthy Young Adults, Xiao Yang, Catalina Roldan, Michael Gazzanigo, Yasmine Nabulsi, Fang Fang

Research and Infrastructure Service Enterprise (RISE) Faculty Publications

Cardiac timing effects reflect the dynamic interplay between interoceptive and exteroceptive processes. Human information processing tends to be facilitated during cardiac diastole and inhibited during systole, reflecting autonomic regulation and the neuromodulation by baroreceptor afferents. Thus, blood pressure (BP) and vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) are potential modulators of those effects. Additionally, cognitive control appears to play a critical role in the processes. However, whether cardiac timing effects are influenced by those factors remains unclear. The present study aimed to clarify these relationships. Fifty-one healthy young adults completed three experimental sessions to assess BP, short-term HRV, and cardiac timing effects. …

Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences Faculty Publications

Loneliness is known to be an important contributor to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little is known about the impact of loneliness on endothelial barrier integrity, a crucial hallmark of CVD development and progression. In this study, we aimed to investigate how loneliness might impact the endothelium. We found greater perceived loneliness associated with the product of circulating epinephrine and TNFα (E/T), which, in turn, associated with lower VE-cadherin on endothelial cells in an ex vivo experiment. Additionally, circulating plasma levels of soluble VE-cadherin were associated significantly with subclinical CVD. To explore the mechanistic aspects of these associations, we measured the …
