The youth mental health crisis continues to face persistent barriers of stigma, workforce shortages, and fragmented service delivery systems. Schools play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges, as youth are six times more likely to access mental health services in schools than in community settings. Frameworks such as the Comprehensive School Mental Health Systems (CSMHS) and the Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF) have improved access and quality of school-based mental health services through integration and partnership efforts. Intellectual functioning constitutes a significant source of heterogeneity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, little is known about how intellectual functioning manifests over development in preschool children with non-syndromic ASD (nsASD) and co-occurring global developmental delay (GDD) or how this relates to functionally impairing co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety. Study participants included 57 children with nsASD and co-occurring global developmental delay (ASD+GDD), 24 categorized with mild GDD, and 33 categorized with moderate GDD. Drawing on dynamic systems theory, the present study explored developmental trends within the context of multiple complex systems, including intelligence, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning. This dissertation investigates the critical role of the cerebellum in speech production, with a focus on chronic post-stroke apraxia of speech (AOS), lesion-related cerebellar degeneration, and age-related changes in cerebellar structure among healthy individuals. While speech deficits have traditionally been attributed to cortical lesions, mounting evidence suggests that the cerebellum contributes significantly to speech-motor planning, execution, and error correction. Using multimodal neuroimaging, lesion-symptom mapping, and standardized speech assessments, this research examines cerebellar gray matter volume (GMV) across three complementary studies.

These health inequities place Black adolescents at greater risk for overweight and obesity, as well as long-term health consequences, including chronic disease and early mortality. However, few health promotion programs have been successful in improving health behaviors among Black adolescents and families. In 2020, Oregon voters approved Measure 110, a groundbreaking policy that decriminalized possession of small quantities of controlled substances and redirected cannabis tax revenues to treatment and recovery centers. This article examines the passage, implementation, and rollback of Measure 110 with HB 4002, enacted in 2024. Drawing on state audits, legislative records, and public health data to contextualize Measure 110 within broader debates on public health, criminal justice reform, and policy-making, Albertson analyzes the progressive policy’s aspirational, reform-minded goals and the practical shortcomings in its enactment. From 1966 until 2001, the World Trade Center complex and its skyscraper Twin Towers were a defining architectural feature of New York City and a landmark in architectural modernism. Minoru Yamasaki, the project’s architect, intended the massive complex to be a “mecca” that drew in and inspired urban workers, exemplifying the Islamic architectural language that he incorporated into his architecture. In this article, Senters examines how architectural criticism evolved while the towers stood and after they were destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is a phenomenon observed when high voltage is passed through a dielectric barrier at high frequencies. Current DBD plasma actuators (PAs) excel at laminar fluid boundary layer control but suffer from limited momentum flux and fluid mechanic inefficiencies. In this article, Mohammed analyzes previous discourse on DBD PAs and offers directions for future research and potential DBD PA applications. Previous work on DBD PAs documented thrust generation at high voltages and frequencies, thrust in varying fluid compositions, and vortex generation. Within academic discussions of death and dying, there is a deficit of qualitative studies on how young adults view personal death. This article explores young adults’ (18-24) views on personal death using inductive coding of the transcriptions of three 1:1 interviews and one focus group. Soto’s findings show that young adults view their personal death in three ways: 1) they reflect on family death experiences as frames of reference for personal death, 2) they rely on a life well- lived to ease anxiety around personal death, and 3) they use humor as a coping mechanism in thinking about and discussing …

As smoking is prohibited on most hospital grounds, hospitalisation presents a valuable opportunity for healthcare professionals to identify smokers, administer smoking cessation treatments, and ensure appropriate inpatient support, as well as continued follow-up on discharge. It has been reported both anecdotally and in published research that encouragement from a health professional is a significant external prompt for a smoker to attempt quitting. It has also been noted in the inpatient setting, one in every 33 conversations will lead to the successful cessation of smoking.

Many interpreters of Thomas Aquinas since the second half of the twentieth-century emphasise the Platonist dimensions of his thought, particularly his metaphysics. This contrasts with, and is a shift away from, the dominant Aristotelian interpretations of previous generations. Aquinas’s theory of knowledge, however, tends still to be interpreted in Aristotelian terms, according to which Augustine’s Platonist illuminationism is replaced by a Peripatetic emphasis on sensation and abstraction in the soul.

This thesis reexamines the role of illumination in Augustine and Aquinas’ theories of knowledge. It asks whether scholarship today ought to reconceive the relationship between these two major thinkers in …

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common, complex, and potentially lethal haemodynamic condition with many underlying aetiologies. It is poorly understood, and diagnosis is usually made late in the disease process resulting in poor outcomes even in the developed world. An innovative universal framework is required to achieve early and accurate diagnosis for improved outcomes, especially in remote and rural areas. The thesis documents my substantial body of work that unlocks a collective framework to assist patients with PH, particularly in areas not classically serviced by tertiary level PH care.

This article interrogates how inflexible designs and policies of airline seating, as well as critical socio-political rhetoric, discipline and marginalize bodies that do not conform to normative standards. Situating airline seating within fat and disability studies models, Mortimer argues that these punitive measures are not neutral, but rather reflective of cultural narratives of productivity, morality, and bodily discipline. Mortimer draws from ethnographic analyses of first-person accounts and policy reviews to demonstrate how shrinking seats, rigid policies, and moralized discourse construct a “space of calculability” that pressures fat individuals to monitor and minimize their bodies to justify their presence in public …

This article examines how fine art auctioneers market dinosaur fossils as art pieces to wealthy collectors, depriving the paleontological field of specimens for scientific research. Drawing from recent examples of fossils sold at fine art auctions, this article notes how rising auction prices for specimens as ‘art’ prevent museums and research institutions from acquiring specimens for research and restoration. Kolstad concludes that the art auction houses’ marketing of fossils as art is detrimental to paleontological research. Voltage- and calcium-gated, large conductance potassium channels (BK; MaxiK) are ubiquitously expressed and subsequently mediate numerous physiological processes. Cholesterol is consumed in high amounts with the diet and accumulates in cellular membranes when plasma levels become elevated. Cholesterol is a known inhibitor of BK channels and is suspected of contribution to many pathophysiological issues via its interaction with these channels. However, the molecular mechanisms that drive cholesterol inhibition of BK channels remain largely unexplored. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with early diagnosis being critical for improving patient outcomes. This study addresses two key aspects of CRC research: understanding its etiology and prognostic biomarkers and exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating hypotheses for early diagnosis. In the first project, we analyzed prognostic biomarkers in CRC, revealing a significant negative correlation between TP53 and CD56 mutations, which have opposing effects on patient survival. TP53, a tumor suppressor gene, is frequently mutated in CRC, while CD56, a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion, may act as a cancer enhancer. …

The genus Orthohantavirus, is a group of tripartite, negative-sense RNA viruses of which some members are the etiologic agents for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or orthohantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Old and New Worlds, respectively. Sampling of wild rodents for these viruses has increased our knowledge of their host range and continues to lead to the discovery of new orthohantaviruses species and strains. HFRS and HPS have case fatality rates of up to 15% and 40%, respectively. And in some years, morbidity rates of up to 100,000 cases can be reached, globally. Myeloid lineage immune cells play a critical role in the early and late stages of the disease, and this activity is mediated through toll-like receptors (TLRs) expressed by these cells. This research aims to assess the impact of incorporating social determinants of health (SDoH) into prediction screening models for predicting lung cancer among high risk-patients. Lung cancer is typically diagnosed at a later stage when surival and health outcomes are poor. Screening guidelines are currently in place; however, patients at high risk can be missed. There is a need for short-term predictions, to better identify patients at an earlier stage.
