Exploring The Concepts Of Rematriation And The Sugpiaq/Alutiiq People’S Traditional Values And Ways Of Being To Address Historical Trauma: A Qualitative Study, Tara Lynn Christiansen-Stiller

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a collaborative exploration of the intersection of traditional Sugpiaq/Alutiiq values, historical trauma, and the process of rematriation. It aims to understand how these elements contribute to healing, resilience, and identity restoration within the Sugpiaq/Alutiiq community. Utilizing a qualitative research approach grounded in Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study engages in in-depth interviews with Alutiiq elders, cultural leaders, and community members. Their lived experiences and perceptions are integral to the research process. The study seeks to uncover how Sugpiaq/Alutiiq cultural values, such as community solidarity, connection to land, and spirituality, protect against the impacts of historical trauma. Additionally, …

Fat Feminists, Ami Trowell, Ami C. Trowell Jan 2025

Fat Feminists, Ami Trowell, Ami C. Trowell

Playwriting (MFA) Theses

This thesis presents the original play "Fat Feminists" alongside a critical reflection exploring the intersection between feminist theory and lived experience. The play depicts two friends confronting their 50th birthdays in a society that has historically valued them primarily for youth and beauty. Through their journey, the work examines how women navigate the terrain of aging in a culture that continues to prioritize female appearance despite decades of feminist progress.

The accompanying critical paper interrogates the disconnection between feminist theoretical ideals and everyday reality, drawing particularly on bell hooks' "Feminism is for Everybody" to frame the discussion. The paper traces …

Development And Validation Of A Nomogram To Predict Survival After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy In Elderly Women With Triple-Negative Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer: A Seer Population-Based Study, Ying Gao, Jinmiao Wang, Shoujun Wang, Weijie Tao, Ran Duan, Jie Hao, Ming Gao

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To construct and verify a nomogram for post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy survival predication in elderly women with triple-negative invasive ductal breast cancer. Methods: Elderly patients diagnosed as triple-negative invasive ductal breast cancer between 2019-2000 were screened from surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database. Depending on the post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy pathological response, they were assigned to the complete or non-complete response group. Inter-group clinicopathological characteristics and disease-specific and overall survivals were compared. Then, they were allocated randomly into the training or validation cohort. A prediction nomogram was developed in the training cohort and verified in the validation cohort. Results: A total of 382 …

Durable Oxyfluoride Waste Forms For Salt Wastes From Molten Salt Reactors, Alevtina A. Maksimova, Jake W. Amoroso, Matthew Page, Gregory Morrison, Hans Conrad Zur Loye Jan 2025

Durable Oxyfluoride Waste Forms For Salt Wastes From Molten Salt Reactors, Alevtina A. Maksimova, Jake W. Amoroso, Matthew Page, Gregory Morrison, Hans Conrad Zur Loye

Faculty Publications

Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are promising technology to replace traditional light and heavy water reactors in the near future. Waste management for MSRs, however, remains a pressing concern that needs to be resolved prior to realizing deployment of MSRs. Specifically, the generated salt waste needs to be safely sequestered, a task made difficult by the high solubility of the salt waste that can cause the release of radionuclides into the environment. This work demonstrates a new approach to immobilize multiple fluoride salts into a single waste form by converting highly-soluble fluorides to durable and stable oxyfluorides. Notably, we report a …

Ovarian Response, Endocrine Environment, And Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins In Beef Cows Using The 7 & 7 Synchronization Protocol, Hunter Haberman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Review aims to provide an overview of the bovine estrous cycle and pregnancy establishment, beginning with follicular development, luteolysis, maternal recognition of pregnancy and early embryonic development. Manipulating the estrus cycle with synchronization protocols is a critical aspect of the beef industry and has greatly improved the efficiency of artificial insemination. This review will evaluate various strategies to synchronize estrus from the very basic to more advanced synchronization protocols. There are many factors that affect the success of the protocol, and many studies have been done to evaluate the estrus cycle to reach the highest level of success from …

Smartphones On Wheels In Southeast Asia: A Crossroads For Data Governance, Attamongkol Tantratian, Gunn Jiravuttipong Jan 2025

Smartphones On Wheels In Southeast Asia: A Crossroads For Data Governance, Attamongkol Tantratian, Gunn Jiravuttipong

Journal of Law and Mobility

While the transformation of automobiles into data-generating “smartphones on wheels” has revolutionized mobility, it has also raised critical concerns over data privacy and sovereignty. Equipped with sensors and connected technologies, smart vehicles collect vast amounts of data, including personal information, driving patterns, and biometric identifiers. While auto-exporting jurisdictions such as the United States, the European Union, and China have introduced regulatory measures to address these challenges, countries importing smart vehicles remain vulnerable due to their limited influence over the auto companies’ integrated technology and data policies.

This Article examines the regulatory and economic challenges faced by developing nations integrating foreign-designed …

Neighborliness Vs. Car Culture: Traffic Violence, Pedestrian Deaths In Philadelphia, And Vision Zero's Concept Of Equity, Regina Austin Jan 2025

Neighborliness Vs. Car Culture: Traffic Violence, Pedestrian Deaths In Philadelphia, And Vision Zero's Concept Of Equity, Regina Austin

Journal of Law and Mobility

Vision Zero (VZ) is a transportation policy adopted by major cities like Philadelphia that aims to reduce or eliminate traffic violence, primarily through improvements in the transportation infrastructure. VZ prioritizes engineering (over enforcement), community engagement, and perhaps most importantly, equity. In the battle for superiority among users of land-based travel modes in America, automobile drivers have benefited from arterial highways that speed traffic flows around and through urban enclaves to reach center city business districts and from a car culture that encourages dominant behavior behind the wheel. Pedestrians have been among the losers.

In Philadelphia, as elsewhere, pedestrians who are …

Borreliosis And Doxycycline Treatment Disrupt Gut Microbiota And Immune Responses In Nonhuman Primates, Ethan G. Napier, Isaac R. Cinco, Sheridan B. Wagner, Ethan V. Stuart, Qi Qiao, Joshua Taylor, Brian Stevenson, Ilhem Messaoudi

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) is the spirochete that causes Lyme disease (LD). Transmission to humans occurs via bites of infected Ixodes spp. ticks. Doxycycline is often used to treat LD patients, which is sometimes delayed due to current diagnostic challenges. Recently, several lines of evidence show dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in LD patients, which may be a host factor contributing to pathogenesis and symp tomology but is still an understudied area in the field. To address this knowledge gap, we longitudinally compared the immune response and gut microbial composi tion of Japanese macaques after intradermal infection with Bb strain 297 …

Before Boone V. Lightner: The Lost History Of Pro-Veteran Canon, Eric Hughes Jan 2025

Before Boone V. Lightner: The Lost History Of Pro-Veteran Canon, Eric Hughes

MC Law Review

The pro-veteran canon, a long-standing principle of statutory construction, has deep historical roots dating back to ancient times, as reflected in religious, legal, and historical texts. This principle, which favors a liberal interpretation of laws to benefit veterans, has evolved as societies sought to recognize and compensate the sacrifices of military service members. From the biblical era’s division of spoils to the Magna Carta’s contractual liberties, and through early English statutes and the American Revolution, this canon has shaped legal frameworks and influenced governance. Notably, U.S. jurisprudence, including foundational decisions like Marbury v. Madison, upheld the pro-veteran canon as …

The History Of Policing And The Impact On Minority Communities: The Case Against Police Abolition, F. Lee Francis Jan 2025

The History Of Policing And The Impact On Minority Communities: The Case Against Police Abolition, F. Lee Francis

MC Law Review

This article critically examines the implications of former FBI Director James Comey’s assertions regarding the rise in violent crime and the phenomenon known as “The Ferguson Effect,” which posits that law enforcement officers are increasingly hesitant to engage in proactive policing due to fear of public backlash and viral scrutiny. Comey’s comments, made in a 2015 speech, sparked significant debate about the psychological impact of heightened scrutiny on police behavior and the potential consequences for public safety.

Through a multi-part analysis, the article first traces the historical development of policing in ancient civilizations and its evolution in the United States …

Different Spanks For Different Ranks: A Critical Appraisal Of Character Evidence In Courts-Martial, Frank Rosenblatt Jan 2025

Different Spanks For Different Ranks: A Critical Appraisal Of Character Evidence In Courts-Martial, Frank Rosenblatt

Journal Articles

This chapter explores character evidence in the U.S. military’s court-martial system. Courts-martial, unlike civilian criminal trials, permit defendants to present evidence of their own good character even when the character trait is not pertinent to the charged offenses. This derogation has been cheered by some as giving military defendants an extra tool to fight back in a system that may be stacked against them. But concerns about expansive use of character evidence soon became apparent: it tends to distort and confuse the issues in trial, and disproportionately benefits only high-status defendants. For all its good intentions, liberalized military character evidence …

A Comparative Law Analysis Of The Military Justice Systems Of Poland And The United States Of America, Frank Rosenblatt, Szymon Kulmaszewski Jan 2025

A Comparative Law Analysis Of The Military Justice Systems Of Poland And The United States Of America, Frank Rosenblatt, Szymon Kulmaszewski

Journal Articles

Most authors agree that "military justice" does not have a clearly defined normative definition. Nevertheless, the term is anchored in the area of institutionalized activities of a military organization (armed forces) and for this reason it functions in the language of both legal science and military science. The text presents a synthetic outline of the history of military justice in Poland and in the U.S. Underlying the assumptions of the military justice system, such as the need to exercise jurisdiction over military persons, and the need to handle military cases within the framework of separated, common features can be discerned. …
