Can Machines Testify? Llms And The Boundaries Of Testimonial Epistemology, Michael J. Cummins

As Large Language Models and AI chatbots become increasingly prevalent, pressing questions are raised about whether beliefs formed through LLM interactions carry the same epistemic weight as beliefs formed through human testimony. How we answer this question depends on whether LLMs can function as testifiers, a role which is typically assumed to require a human or human-like agent. This assumption has gone largely unexamined, yet its consequences are significant: if LLM outputs cannot constitute testimony, then the justificatory tools of testimonial epistemology are unavailable to any beliefs formed through LLM interaction. After trial on the tenant's counterclaims of breach of warranty of habitability, harassment, and rent overcharge, the court entered judgment for the tenant on all three. The subject apartment was found to be an unlawful combination of predecessor apartments whose legal rent was never registered with DHCR, requiring application of the default formula under RSC § 2522.6(b)(3) to calculate overcharge damages. The court awarded a rent abatement, civil penalties for harassment, and entered an order enjoining the landlord from further harassing the tenant.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has one of the lowest five-year survival rates among cancers and is characterized by near-ubiquitous occurrence of oncogenic KRAS mutations. Oncogenic KRAS activates several downstream pathways, including ERK 1/2 MAPK and PI3K, which are critical for PDAC. However, accumulating evidence suggests that PI3K activity can be maintained independent of oncogenic KRAS. The high prevalence of KRAS^G12R in PDAC challenges the prevailing model of KRAS-driven PI3K activation, as this mutant is defective in direct engagement with PI3Kα. We present a search for gravitational waves from inspiraling, planetary-mass ultracompact binaries using data from the first part of the fourth observing run of LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA. Finding no evidence of such systems, we determine the maximum distance reach for such objects and their merger rate densities. Then, we identify classes of primordial black hole mass distributions for which these rate limits can be translated into relevant constraints on the mass distribution of primordial black holes, assuming that they are all composed of dark matter, in the mass range [10−6,10−3]⁢𝑀⊙. Background: Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a severe subtype of chronic rhinosinusitis characterized by fungal hypersensitivity and accentuated type 2 inflammation. Dupilumab-a fully human mAb blocking IL-4/13, approved for type 2 inflammatory diseases, including chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps-may benefit patients with AFRS.

Objective: We sought to understand the effect of dupilumab in AFRS.

Methods: In this phase 3 trial, patients with AFRS age ≥6 years were randomized to dupilumab or matched placebo for 52 weeks. The primary end point was Lund-Mackay computed tomography score, quantifying sinus opacification, at 52 weeks. Secondary end points were multiplicity-controlled and hierarchically tested.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting approximately 40% of U.S. adults aged 30 years and older, is characterized by dysbiosis of the dental plaque microbiome. However, although scaling and root planing (SRP) is the cornerstone of periodontal treatment, its effects on the taxonomic composition and functional potential of the dental plaque microbiome remain incompletely understood. In this study, we used whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing to characterize taxonomic composition and functional potential in dental plaque microbiomes collected from 39 patients with Stage II or III generalized periodontitis before and 3–4 months after SRP. As Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BCE and a major player in the Augustan age, she had the power to change the fate of empires. Despite her powerful position in history, however, Cleopatra’s historical narrative is often focused on the alliances that surrounded her. Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee

Entity-aware document retrieval uses query-associated entities as ranking signals, assuming that semantically relevant entities are also useful retrieval signals. We show this assumption is insufficient - and explain why. Unlike terms, which are ground-truth observations, entity links are hypotheses produced by an imperfect linker: an entity can be topically central yet provide no discriminative signal if the linker fires indiscriminately across relevant and non-relevant documents. We formalize this as a distinction between Conceptual Entity Relevance (CER) - whether an entity is topically related to a query - and Observable Entity Relevance (OER) - whether its observed presence in a collection …

The objective of this thesis was to collect and analyze magnetic field data in the vicinity of the Mercy, Tracey, and Jay Scutti with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a forward mounted magnetometer. The collected data was used to develop geomagnetic contour maps and magnetic thresholds of known anomalies to compare the results with validated sources such as NOAA.

In addition, this collected data was used to develop a Gazebo simulation which accurately modeled the magnetic field data and ocean effects of the Fort Lauderdale Shipwreck Trail. This Gazebo simulation allowed for proper testing and refinement of object avoidance …

The Gulf of Mexico harbors a unique pelagic ecoregion, recognized for its diverse assemblages of mesopelagic fishes (200 – 1000 m depth distribution during daytime), which play a crucial role in deep-ocean food web dynamics. South Florida hosts a number of non-native wildlife species, including African monkeys. This study examined wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) in Dania Beach, Florida, to determine whether aircraft-related atmospheric noise affected their threat detection capabilities and behavioral responses. Using predator-call playbacks and focal scan samples, behavioral data was recorded across pre-, during-, and post-playback phases. Behaviors were labeled as nonvigilant or vigilant. The study also assessed whether responses differed between the local and novel predator calls as well as whether repeated trials suggested habituation over the course of the experiment. The ability to organize experiences in time is fundamental to episodic memory and enables animals to predict and guide future behavior. Hippocampal time cells are thought to provide a neural representation for the temporal component of memory. However, time cells have been observed in working memory tasks where animals were not required to keep track of elapsed time. Therefore, it remains unclear what are the hippocampal patterns of activity during explicit timing. Medical device–related pressure injuries are a significant and largely preventable patient safety problem, yet existing pressure injury risk scales do not adequately capture device-specific risk factors in adults. This methodological study developed and psychometrically evaluated a standardized risk assessment scale to identify medical device–related pressure injury risk in hospitalized adult patients. An initial item pool was generated from an extensive literature review and clinical expertise, and content validity was assessed by seven experts using the Davis technique (content validity index = 0.96). In this study, bio-based polyurethane–urea films were successfully synthesized using soybean oil polyol (SOP), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and ethylenediamine (EDA), followed by modification with varying concentrations of vinyltrimethylsilane (VTMS) to enhance their mechanical, thermal, and surface properties. The effect of VTMS incorporation on the structure–property relationships of the films was systematically investigated through tensile testing, hardness measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), swelling behavior, gel content determination, and water contact angle analysis. The results demonstrated that VTMS significantly improved tensile strength and hardness due to increased intermolecular interactions and crosslink density within the polymer network, with optimal performance …
