Double Lorentzian Atomic Prism, David J. Starling, Steven M. Bloch, Praveen K. Vudyasetu, Joseph S. Choi, Bethany Little, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present an atomic prism spectrometer that utilizes the steep linear dispersion between two strongly absorbing hyperfine resonances of rubidium. We resolve spectral lines 50 MHz apart and, utilizing a larger part of the available spectrum than only between the two resonances, we spatially separate collinear pump, signal, and idler beams resulting from a four-wave mixing process. Due to the high transparency possible between the resonances, these results have applications in the filtering of narrow-band entangled photons and interaction-free measurements.

Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen Aug 2012

Movement, Habitat Use And Detection Probability Of Bridle Shiner Estimated By Patch Occupancy Modeling In A Connecticut Watershed, Timothy Jensen

Master's Theses

The bridle shiner (Notropis bifrenatus) is believed to have once been an important prey item throughout its native range; however, recent reports suggest populations have declined significantly and the species is now widely considered as imperiled. Habitats that are associated with this species are typically difficult to sample using traditional methods, making it unclear how much of the observed range reduction could be actual or perceived. My objectives were to estimate detection probability of bridle shiner, evaluate the importance of habitat on their distribution, and determine patterns of movement among habitat patches. I employed a repeated surveys design …

Configuration Of 3u Cubesat Structures For Gain Improvement Of S-Band Antennas, Vivek Shirvante, Shawn Johnson, Kathryn Cason, Kunal Patankar, Norman Fitz-Coy Aug 2012

Configuration Of 3u Cubesat Structures For Gain Improvement Of S-Band Antennas, Vivek Shirvante, Shawn Johnson, Kathryn Cason, Kunal Patankar, Norman Fitz-Coy

Small Satellite Conference

Nano- and pico-satellites in low earth orbit (LEO), unlike their larger counterparts, have more stringent limitations on antenna design due to power constraints that govern the operational frequency and size that defines the mass and volume constraints. High bandwidth applications use higher frequencies and require higher transmission power. High gain antennas can reduce the transmission power requirements. CubeSat’s with body-mounted solar cells are limited in power generation due to limited surface area. Deployable solar panels offer a solution to the limited power by maximizing the surface area of solar cells exposed to solar radiation. The metallic deployable solar panel support …

A Stellar Gyroscope For Small Satellite Attitude Determination, Samir Rawashdeh, James Lumpp Jr., James Barrington-Brown, Massimiliano Pastena Aug 2012

A Stellar Gyroscope For Small Satellite Attitude Determination, Samir Rawashdeh, James Lumpp Jr., James Barrington-Brown, Massimiliano Pastena

Small Satellite Conference

A stellar gyroscope is a star based attitude propagator that is capable of propagating a spacecraft’s attitude in three degrees of freedom by tracking the motion of the stars in an imager's field of view. The modeling and algorithm development has been done by the Space Systems Laboratory at the University of Kentucky. This paper discusses a realization of the stellar gyroscope concept on a CubeSat attitude determination and control system (ADCS) designed by SSBV Space & Ground Systems UK. The stellar gyroscope can be used to measure attitude changes from a known initial condition without drift while sufficient stars …

Differential Optical Shadow Sensor Cubesat Mission, Andreas Zoellner, Sasha Buchman, John Conklin, Dan Debra, Shally Saraf, Seiya Shimizu, Hamoud Aljibreen Aug 2012

Differential Optical Shadow Sensor Cubesat Mission, Andreas Zoellner, Sasha Buchman, John Conklin, Dan Debra, Shally Saraf, Seiya Shimizu, Hamoud Aljibreen

Small Satellite Conference

A CubeSat mission is proposed to demonstrate in orbit performance of the Differential Optical Shadow Sensor (DOSS), a high precision, compact, low-cost position sensor. The DOSS is used as displacement sensor in the Modular Gravitational Reference Sensor (MGRS). GRS technology enables advances in Earth science and precision distributed Earth-observing sensors, as well as space science, precise orbit determination and maintenance, and precision spacecraft formation flying. To reduce the overall mission risk for a proposed drag-free small satellite mission built around the MGRS, the DOSS is tested in a 2U CubeSat. The main mission objective is to raise the Technology Readiness …

Ensuring Clean Power For Rf And Digital Applications, Tom Boehler, Steven Sandler Aug 2012

Ensuring Clean Power For Rf And Digital Applications, Tom Boehler, Steven Sandler

Small Satellite Conference

Power supply designs are often overlooked as part of a high-frequency electronic system. A wide range of approaches are used and many of these power designs simply don’t work as well as they should. These power supply designs perform poorly for a number of technical reasons, and it may be helpful examine these issues. Key performance requirements, such as stability, regulation, ripple, and headroom are often overlooked and not properly met. To ensure these performance criteria are addressed, design engineers require more complete data sheets, appropriate computer-aided simulation models, and suitable test equipment. In many designs, the same power supply, …

The Qeyssat Mission: Demonstrating Global Quantum Key Distribution Using A Microsatellite, I. D'Souza, D. Hudson, C. Evans, E. Choi, T. Jennewein, K. Sarda

Small Satellite Conference

QEYSSat (Quantum EncrYption and Science Satellite) is a proposed microsatellite mission concept under development for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) that will demonstrate long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) from space. Under the leadership of principal investigator Dr. Thomas Jennewein of the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and in partnership with the Institut National d’Optique (INO), the University of Toronto Space Flight Laboratory (UTIAS/SFL) and the Neptec Design Group, COM DEV has advanced the QEYSSat mission concept over the last two years through a series of technical studies funded initially by Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and …
