Investigating Self-Cooling Effects Of Ventilated Attics Under Different Roof And Ambient Temperatures In Summer, Zhigang Shen, Shimin Wang
Investigating Self-Cooling Effects Of Ventilated Attics Under Different Roof And Ambient Temperatures In Summer, Zhigang Shen, Shimin Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
An unsteady computational fluid dynamics model is employed to simulate summer-time buoyancy-driven turbulent ventilation in gable-roof attics of residential buildings. The energy performance of vented attics is assessed by comparing their performance to sealed attics with the same geometry and insulation configurations. The simulated boundary conditions of the roof-top temperature ranging between 295.15 K and 345.15 K, coupled with an ambient temperature ranging between 295.15 K and 315.15 K, resemble the summer attic conditions with effects of solar irradiance on the roofs. Simulation results indicate that both the vented and sealed attics are dominated by thermal stratification. The cooling load …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the risks of sharps (needlestick) injuries among nurses and midwives providing care to patients in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was completed by 712 nurses from 11 different African countries who were attending the African Midwives Research Network meeting in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar Es Salaam Tanzania or other organized nursing meetings. Questions related to their knowledge of universal precautions, level of education, availability and use of protective apparel, sharps and splash injuries/exposures, work schedule, and needle use. Generalized estimating equation models, accommodating the correlation within the residing country, were …
An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar
An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Strong data management skills are essential for effective evaluation of evidence-based practice project implementation. Completion of a scholarly evidence-based project requires application of data management skills in order to understand and address a complex practice, process, or systems problem; develop, implement and monitor an innovative evidence-based intervention to address that problem; and evaluate the outcomes. In fact, EBP projects may require stronger data management skills than those required in traditional research because they often make use of data generated for direct care or administrative purposes that require sophisticated data cleansing and manipulation techniques. These projects commonly use observational study techniques …
Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres
Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Nursing research often relies on data obtained from individuals in an effort to understand human experiences of health and illness. These individual experiences do not occur in isolation; instead, they take place within larger contexts, such as families, social groups, and schools or communities. These organizations function as complex adaptive systems (CAS), which resist reduction into simple cause-and-effect relationships. Investigating such systems, including collection of data from multiple individuals, requires flexible and adaptable research methods. Social network analysis (SNA) facilitates data collection from multiple individuals in the same context (e.g., a family, an organization), examination of interactions among individuals, …
Effect Of Nurses Living Fit? Exercise And Nutrition Intervention On Body Mass Index In Nurses, Karen Gabel Speroni
Effect Of Nurses Living Fit? Exercise And Nutrition Intervention On Body Mass Index In Nurses, Karen Gabel Speroni
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Overweight and obesity are increasing at alarming rates worldwide. In the healthcare setting, administrators are searching for evidence-based programs featuring interventions on healthy living to enable weight loss in overweight workers and maintenance of normal weight. This is especially true among professional nurses who often become "role models" for patients affected by illnesses induced by overweight status. The hospital-based Nurses Living Fit & trade; (NLF) intervention was developed and researched by nurses to decrease overweight in nurses.
Methods: This prospective, quasi-experimental, multi-center study evaluated changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference between NLF and contrast nurse group …

Where Have All The Stti/Anf Scholars Gone?, Patricia R. Messmer
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and American Nurses Foundation (ANF) began jointly sponsoring a nursing research grant in 1987 with STTI reviewing - even years; ANF odd years. The purpose of this grant is to develop nurse scientists with programs of research and infuse funding potential into promoting nursing science. The aim of this study was to 1) systematical review research conducted by STTI/ANF scholars and 2) understand how "seed" funding promotes the research trajectory for these scholars. Methods: Structured interviews with past STTI/ANF scholars; archival records (Boston University History of Nursing, Nursing Research, AJN, Undine Sams Collection) and …
Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Self-Confidence With High Fidelity Simulation, Geraldine M. Berkvam
Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Self-Confidence With High Fidelity Simulation, Geraldine M. Berkvam
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Research has been conducted about the various features of simulation which contribute to successful learning experiences of students. However, there is little research about students' perceptions of their satisfaction and self-confidence in learning when simulation is used as a teaching strategy. This study was designed to determine if high fidelity clinical simulation provided nursing students with learning experiences which promoted satisfaction and self-confidence in their preparation for clinical practice. The theoretical framework for the design of this study was Alfred Bandura's Social Cognitive Learning Theory.
Methods: A questionnaire was administered to nursing students after completion of medical-surgical clinical simulation …

Normative Cultural Values And The Experiences Of Mexican-American Mothers In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu), Lisa M. Cleveland, Sharon D. Horner
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Little is known about the experiences of Mexican-American mothers who have had an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Therefore the purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding to guide nursing practice.
Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach was used. Data collection was conducted through audio-taped, transcribed, semi-structured, individual interviews and field notes. The 5 normative cultural values for Latino families; 1) simpatia, 2) personalismo, 3) respeto, 4) familismo, and 5) fatalismo were used as a sensitizing framework to guide data interpretation.
Results: A convenience sample of fifteen English-speaking, Mexican-American women was interviewed. The women's …
Respiratory Monitoring Practices During Procedural Sedation And Analgesia In The Cardiac Catheterisation Lab Could Be Enhanced By Using Capnography To Assess Ventilation, Aaron W. Conway, John X. Rolley, Paul Fulbrook, Karen Page
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Capnography is very effective in detecting depressed respiration during procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) of non-ventilated patients. However, nurses do not routinely use this technology in the cardiac catheterisation lab (CCL). Accordingly, we sought to analyse current practices to ascertain the role that capnography may contribute to this setting.
Methods: Retrospective medical record audit of procedures performed in the CCL of one private hospital in May and June 2010.
Results: Nurses administered PSA during 154/397 (38.8%) procedures, consisting of: 53/211 (25.1%) coronary angiographies; 47/84 (56.0%) percutaneous coronary interventions; 7/15 (46.7%) electrophysiology study and radiofrequency ablations; 35/52 (%) cardiac pacemaker …

Phylotranscriptomics To Bring The Understudied Into The Fold: Monophyletic Ostracoda, Fossil Placement, And Pancrustacean Phylogeny, Todd H. Oakley, Joanna M. Wolfe, Annie R. Lindgren, Alexander K. Zaharoff
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
An ambitious, yet fundamental goal for comparative biology is to understand the evolutionary relationships for all of life. However, many important taxonomic groups have remained recalcitrant to inclusion into broader scale studies. Here, we focus on collection of 9 new 454 transcriptome data sets from Ostracoda, an ancient and diverse group with a dense fossil record, which is often undersampled in broader studies. We combine the new transcriptomes with a new morphological matrix (including fossils) and existing expressed sequence tag, mitochondrial genome, nuclear genome, and ribosomal DNA data. Our analyses lead to new insights into ostracod and pancrustacean phylogeny. We …
