Tectonic And Climatic Controls On Long-Term Silicate Weathering In Asia Since 5 Ma, Shiming Wan, Peter D. Clift, Anchun Li, Zhaojie Yu, Tiegang Li, Dengke Hu

Faculty Publications

Determining the interplay between tectonic deformation, climate, atmospheric CO2 concentrations and continental weathering and erosion is key to understanding the mechanisms that forced Cenozoic global cooling. In contrast with studies of paleo-climate and pCO2, the history of long-term silicate weathering in the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau (HTP) during the late Cenozoic remains unclear. We reconstruct 5m.y. of silicate sedimentary records at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1143 in the South China Sea to explore the weathering history of the Mekong River basin that supplied the sediment. Coherent variation of weathering proxies from the South China Sea, Bay of Bengal, Loess …

Evaluation Of The Clinical Integration Model For Hospital Care Delivery, Cheryl Mckay

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Two studies were used to evaluate whether introduction of the Clinical Integration Model (CIM) would decrease cost, length of stay (LOS), and mortality in two populations: a psychiatric in-patient population and congestive heart failure (CHF) patients. Objectives: 1. Evaluate reliability and validity of a process tool, the CareGraph, essential in the CIM. 2. Determine if there is a difference for LOS and cost between patients receiving care in the CIM and those receiving care in a traditional primary care delivery model in a psychiatric population; compare the same parameters as well as survival in the CHF population. Methods: Reliability …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

In the basement corridor of the Main Interior Building in Washington, D.C. is the most beautiful painting I've even seen. I've gotten the chance on a couple of occasions, while visiting the Department of the Interior Headquarters for meetings and whatnot for work to wander down outside of the cafeteria to see the mural. It is pure beauty, mostly forgotten and ignored by the folks who work in that building everyday. I get these weird looks while I stand in awe of the massive canvas, like I shouldn't stop and stare. I don't care. I take pictures. I gawk. My …

Instruction Manual: Photogrammetry As A Non-Contact Measurement System In Large Scale Structural Testing, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Rhu Li

Architectural Engineering

Photogrammetry is a non-contact measurement method that is being used in large scale structural experimentation to extract information about the overall geometry of the specimen as well as the XYZ motion of select points on the structure during testing. This is possible through the use of high-resolution still cameras that capture several photographs of the specimen and are processed using photogrammetric software. The following document will focus specifically on the application of PhotoModeler® as the image post-processing tool. This instruction manual aims to provide guidance to researchers who would like to adopt photogrammetric techniques to acquire experimental test data, especially …

Influence Of Electrostatic Charge Upon The Deposition Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Aerosols Within Cascade Impactors, Megha Mohan Aug 2012

Influence Of Electrostatic Charge Upon The Deposition Behavior Of Pharmaceutical Aerosols Within Cascade Impactors, Megha Mohan

Theses and Dissertations

Cascade impactors, routinely used for in vitro particle size characterization of pharmaceutical aerosols, are calibrated using dilute, charge-neutralized, monodisperse aerosols. But pharmaceutical aerosols are known to generate concentrated, inherently charged, polydisperse aerosol clouds. A computational model of the Andersen Cascade Impactor (ACI) suggested that the presence of charge on aerosol particles may influence their deposition within the ACI, but experimental validation of the model is warranted. This dissertation investigates the influence of electrostatic charge upon the deposition behavior of aerosols within cascade impactors, to address the impact of charge on particle size characterization. The influence of applied charge upon the …

Formation And Characterization Of Non-Growth States In Clostridium Thermocellum: Spores And L-Forms, Elizabeth B. Mearls, Javier A. Izquierdo, Lee R. Lynd Aug 2012

Formation And Characterization Of Non-Growth States In Clostridium Thermocellum: Spores And L-Forms, Elizabeth B. Mearls, Javier A. Izquierdo, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Clostridium thermocellum is an anaerobic thermophilic bacterium that exhibits high levels of cellulose solublization and produces ethanol as an end product of its metabolism. Using cellulosic biomass as a feedstock for fuel production is an attractive prospect, however, growth arrest can negatively impact ethanol production by fermentative microorganisms such as C. thermocellum. Understanding conditions that lead to non-growth states in C. thermocellum can positively influence process design and culturing conditions in order to optimize ethanol production in an industrial setting.

Attentive And Pre-Attentive Processes In Change Detection And Identification, Howard C. Hughes, Gideon Paul Caplovitz, Rebecca A. Loucks, Robert Fendrich Aug 2012

Attentive And Pre-Attentive Processes In Change Detection And Identification, Howard C. Hughes, Gideon Paul Caplovitz, Rebecca A. Loucks, Robert Fendrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

In studies of change blindness, observers often have the phenomenological impression that the blindness is overcome all at once, so that change detection, localization and identification apparently occur together. Three experiments are described that explore dissociations between these processes using a discrete trial procedure in which 2 visual frames are presented sequentially with no intervening inter-frame-interval. The results reveal that change detection and localization are essentially perfect under these conditions regardless of the number of elements in the display, which is consistent with the idea that change detection and localization are mediated by pre-attentive parallel processes. In contrast, identification accuracy …

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics And Solvable Models, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jonathan Bougie, Jeffrey Mallow, C. Rasinariu Aug 2012

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics And Solvable Models, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jonathan Bougie, Jeffrey Mallow, C. Rasinariu

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We review solvable models within the framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM). In SUSYQM, the shape invariance condition insures solvability of quantum mechanical problems. We review shape invariance and its connection to a consequent potential algebra. The additive shape invariance condition is specified by a difference-differential equation; we show that this equation is equivalent to an infinite set of partial differential equations. Solving these equations, we show that the known list of h-independent superpotentials is complete. We then describe how these equations could be extended to include superpotentials that do depend on h.

Winthrop News 2012

  • Johnson was selected to participate in the DOW-MIT ACCESS program, which was designed to increase the diversity of qualified applicants to Ph.D. programs in chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science throughout the United States.
  • During each of the past two summers, Johnson has conducted full-time research in chemistry faculty member Nick Grossoehme's laboratory investigating protein regulation mechanisms of intracellular copper concentrations.
