In four studies, the live load factors for the design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, and the strength reduction factors assigned to the elements that use FRP material as internal or external reinforcement, are reevaluated against the values in current practice. Taking advantage of the theory of the reliability of structures, Studies I and II incorporate the life-time into the live load factor of an RC element. To this end, a statistical model is established upon the recognized axioms about the probabilistic distributions of load and resistance and that the live load factor of 1.60, stated by the current building …

A Social Capital Model Of Public Relations: Development And Validation Of A Social Capital Measure, Melissa D. Dodd

A theory and conceptualization of social capital as a resource- and exchange- based function of public relations was proposed. Fourteen hypotheses and one research question tested social capital propositions and postulates in a public relations-specific context, and a measure of social capital was created and tested alongside measures of human capital and organizational financial capital. A holistic model of social capital was tested using structural equation modeling such that human capital was hypothesized to predict social capital, human and social capital were hypothesized to predict public relations outcomes, and public relations outcomes were hypothesized to predict financial capital. The Effect Of Increased Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Activation Of Ppar Pathways In A Mouse Model Of Aging, Lloye M. Dillon

Aging is the progressive decline in cellular, tissue and organ function. The mitochondrial theory of aging suggests that the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, loss of organ function and consequently a decrease in lifespan. This theory is appealing as there is a correlation between age-dependent alterations in mtDNA and an increased risk for developing cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and myopathy. To further investigate the role of mtDNA mutations in aging, the mtDNA mutator mouse, a mouse model with a proof-reading deficient mtDNA polymerase γ (POLG) was created.
