On May 26, 2011, only hours before three provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act were scheduled to expire, Congress passed an extension. For days, the White House had someone ready to fly to Europe with the legislation in hand for the President to sign, but Congress had been tardy. It seemed quite important to the White House that none of these provisions lapse for any length of time, even the relatively short time it would take to fly from Washington to France. The global financial crisis has cast a strong light on some hitherto obscure corners of the financial world, provoking an outpouring of calls for concerted international action. “Hard law” having disappointed, can “soft law”, in the form of international financial standards, substitute for traditional national legislation. This article examines some of the difficulties associated with the “international standards as soft law” discourse.

In grass inflorescences, a structure called the “pulvinus” is found between the inflorescence main stem and lateral branches. The size of the pulvinus affects the angle of the lateral branches that emerge from the main axis and therefore has a large impact on inflorescence architecture. Through EMS mutagenesis we have identified three complementation groups of recessive mutants in maize having defects in pulvinus formation. All mutants showed extremely acute tassel branch angles accompanied by a significant reduction in the size of the pulvinus compared with normal plants. In this thesis, I explore whether blind trusts present a viable option for campaign finance reform. More specifically, would either permitting (voluntary) or requiring (mandatory) anonymous donations for political campaigns allow for fully funded, yet privately funded, campaigns while preventing problems, whether real or perceived, such as buying influence (quid pro quo) or buying access, which are traditionally associated with large campaign donations? The present invention relates to plant proteins produced by a plant's epidermal layer that contribute to the innate pest/disease resistance of the plant (“phylloplanins”), compositions comprising the phylloplanins and methods of using them. In particular the methods relate to inhibiting or preventing microbial, e.g., fungal or bacterial, growth on a subject, organism or surface by administering a phylloplanin. The invention also relates to transformed host cells that produce phylloplanins, and to transgenic plants producing phylloplanins conferring increased resistance to microbial infections/growth.

BACKGROUND: Our earlier reports demonstrated that membrane-bound semaphorin 5A (SEMA5A) is expressed in aggressive pancreatic cancer cells and tumours, and promotes tumour growth and metastasis. In this study, we examine whether (1) pancreatic cancer cells secrete SEMA5A and (2) that secreted SEMA5A modulates certain phenotypes associated with tumour progression, angiogenesis and metastasis through various other molecular factors and signalling proteins.

METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we show that human pancreatic cancer cell lines secrete the extracellular domain (ECD) of SEMA5A (SEMA5A-ECD) and overexpression of mouse Sema5A-ECD in Panc1 cells (not expressing SEMA5A; Panc1-Sema5A-ECD; control cells - Panc1-control) significantly increases …

Background: For many decades, the standard of care radiotherapy regimen for medulloblastoma has been photon (megavoltage x-rays) craniospinal irradiation (CSI). The late effects associated with CSI are well-documented in the literature and are in-part attributed to unwanted dose to healthy tissue. Recently, there is growing interest in using proton therapy for CSI in pediatric and adolescent patients to reduce this undesirable dose. Thellungiella salsuginea, a close relative of Arabidopsis, represents an extremophile model for abiotic stress tolerance studies. We present the draft sequence of the T. salsuginea genome, assembled based on ∼134-fold coverage to seven chromosomes with a coding capacity of at least 28,457 genes. This genome provides resources and evidence about the nature of defense mechanisms constituting the genetic basis underlying plant abiotic stress tolerance. Comparative genomics and experimental analyses identified genes related to cation transport, abscisic acid signaling, and wax production prominent in T. salsuginea as possible contributors to its success in stressful environments.

Stipa hymenoides and Sphaeralcea parvifolia are native to rangelands in western North America and have been selected as priority species for the restoration of degraded grasslands in the Colorado Plateau. To study the natural population structure of these species, individuals were collected from 44 populations of Stipa hymenoides and 23 populations of Sphaeralcea (22 populations of S. parvifolia and one population of S. grossulariifolia) distributed throughout southwest U.S. including Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah. Research on the Theory of Planned Behavior has previously demonstrated that, as measures of subjective norms, descriptive norms and normative beliefs predict intentions to engage in behaviors such as smoking. Descriptive norms measuring the prevalence of parent and peer smoking have been investigated as predictors of intentions among adolescent smokers. Normative beliefs representing parent and peer attitudes toward smoking have also been shown to predict adolescents' plans to smoke. Within a sample of 356 adolescent smokers, the present study attempted to model the relationships between these measures of social influence and intentions using Structural Equation Modeling. A non-invasive remote sensing optical technique for detecting surface damage on RTV 655 was investigated under different environmental conditions. The adopted sesning mechanism utilizes speckle contrast fluctuations and inteference patterns created as a result of defect illumination with a 50 mW He-Ne laser. It has been demonstrated that the coupled nanostructured semiconductors in the form of nanocomposites (NC) enhance the performance by the mutual charge transfer of carriers between each semiconductor components with compatible chemical and electrical properties.
