This dissertation is focused on the development of stochastic models for carcinogenesis of human kidney cancer. Based on recent biological studies, we have developed a multiple-pathway stochastic model for the human pediatric kidney cancer - Wilms' tumor. To account for hereditary cancer cases and the development of non-hereditary cancers through two different pathways in the stochastic model, we have also developed a generalized mixture model. In this mixture model, two mixing probability distributions were applied, which are a multinomial distribution to explain the genetic segregation of the stage-limiting tumor suppressor genes and a binomial distribution to account for the development …

Evaluation Of Cerebellar-Cortical Circuitry Using Rodent Models: Relevance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tiffany Danielle Rogers

While the etiology of autism is unknown, current research indicates that abnormalities of the cerebellum, now believed to be involved in cognitive function, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are associated with autism. The current paper proposes that impaired cerebello-cortical circuitry could, at least in part, underlie autistic symptoms. The evidence linking the cerebellum to autism and rodent models useful for elucidating etiological factors in autism as well as their potential impact on cerebello-cortical circuitry are reviewed. Bacterial genomic islands are often flanked by tRNA genes, which act as sites for the integration of foreign DNA into the host chromosome. For example, Bacillus cereus ATCC14579 contains a pathogenicity island flanked by a predicted pseudo-tRNA, tRNAOther, which does not function in translation. Deletion of tRNAOther led to significant changes in cell wall morphology and antibiotic resistance and was accompanied by changes in the expression of numerous genes involved in oxidative stress responses, several of which contain significant complementarities to sequences surrounding tRNAOther. This suggested that tRNAOther might be expressed as part of a larger RNA, and RACE analysis …

Mechanical Stretch And Pi3k Signaling Link Cell Migration And Proliferation To Coordinate Epithelial Tubule Morphogenesis In The Zebrafish Pronephros, Aleksandr Vasilyev, Yan Liu, Nathan Hellman, Narendra Pathak, Iain A. Drummond

Organ development leads to the emergence of organ function, which in turn can impact developmental processes. Here we show that fluid flow-induced collective epithelial migration during kidney nephron morphogenesis induces cell stretch that in turn signals epithelial proliferation. Increased cell proliferation was dependent on PI3K signaling. Inhibiting epithelial proliferation by blocking PI3K or CDK4/Cyclin D1 activity arrested cell migration prematurely and caused a marked overstretching of the distal nephron tubule. Computational modeling of the involved cell processes predicted major morphological and kinetic outcomes observed experimentally under a variety of conditions. • What is the central question of this study?

  In human arteries involved in the regulation of muscle blood flow, there is a lack of data about whether acidosis alters vascular sensitivity to vasoactive agents, as well as altering endothelium dependent vasorelaxation. Little is known about the interaction of metabolites and vascular function in human skeletal muscle feed arteries.

  What is the main finding and its importance?

  Increasing acidosis attenuated the response and sensitivity of the arteries to phenylephrine; this effect was selective to the receptor over smooth muscle.

The current study examined the self-report of bullying experiences and perceptions of high functioning autistic students, as well as the relationship between social functioning and these variables. A sample of 44 children between the ages of 9 and 14 were asked to report their experiences with bullying across educational settings using a revised version of Susan Swearer's The Bully Survey-Student Edition (2001). The students also completed part D of the survey in order to examine their acceptance of bullying behaviors. Understanding the impact of epigenetic mechanisms on tumorigenesis is essential, as epigenetic alterations are associated with tumor initiation and progression. Because epigenetic changes are reversible, they are potential targets for cancer therapy. Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (NURF) is a chromatin-remodeling complex that regulates gene expression by changing nucleosome positioning along the DNA sequence. Previous studies have shown a role for NURF in embryonic development as well as regulating genes involved in tumor progression. Periprosthetic joint infection continues to frustrate the medical community. Although the demand for total joint arthroplasty is increasing, the burden of such infections is increasing even more rapidly, and they pose a unique challenge because their accurate diagnosis and eradication can prove elusive. This review describes the current knowledge regarding diagnosis and treatment of periprosthetic joint infection. A number of tools are available to aid in establishing a diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection. These include the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum C-reactive protein concentration, synovial white blood-cell count and differential, imaging studies, tissue specimen culturing, and histological analysis.
