Rigid Finite Element Model Of A Cracked Rotor, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki Aug 2012

Rigid Finite Element Model Of A Cracked Rotor, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The article introduces a new mathematical model for the cracked rotating shaft. The model is based on the rigid finite element (RFE) method, which has previously been successfully applied for the dynamic analysis of many complicated, mechanical structures. In this article, the RFE method is extended and adopted for the modeling of rotating machines. An original concept of crack modeling utilizing the RFE method is developed. The crack is presented as a set of spring–damping elements of variable stiffness connecting two sections of the shaft. An alternative approach for approximating the breathing mechanism of the crack is introduced. The approach …

Effect Of Halite And Calcite Coatings On Thermal Infrared Spectra Wih Implications For Mars Exploration, Jeffrey A. Berger Aug 2012

Effect Of Halite And Calcite Coatings On Thermal Infrared Spectra Wih Implications For Mars Exploration, Jeffrey A. Berger

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Knowing the occurrence and distribution of soluble ionic salts allows us to model the aqueous history and geochemical conditions of surface solutions on Mars. Salts deposited as coatings are particularly important for attaining this knowledge because the thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing method for determining mineral abundance is limited to the top few hundred micrometers of the surface. To better understand the TIR properties of salt coatings, we investigated the effects of coating thickness and texture on the TIR reflectance spectra of halite- and calcite-coated glasses. We evaluated salt coating textures that could occur on Mars: 1) continuous, uniformly thick …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We have performed elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystal samples of the coordination polymer compound CuF2(H2O)(2)(pyz) (pyz = pyrazine) to study the magnetic structure and excitations. The elastic neutron diffraction measurements indicate a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with moments oriented along the [0.7 0 1] real-space direction and an ordered moment of 0.60 +/- 0.03 mu(B)/Cu. This value is significantly smaller than the single-ion magnetic moment, reflecting the presence of strong quantum fluctuations. The spin wave dispersion from magnetic zone center to the zone boundary points (0.5 1.5 0) and (0.5 0 1.5) can be described by a …

Mindfulness In Education : The Impact Of Mental Training On Attention And Working Memory In Children, Julia Keller Aug 2012

Mindfulness In Education : The Impact Of Mental Training On Attention And Working Memory In Children, Julia Keller

Psychology ETDs

Mindfulness (MF) is the self-regulation of attention, including sustained attention, switching attention between tasks, and the inhibition of elaborative processing. Another type of attentional skill not specifically targeted in this definition, but that might benefit from MF training, is control over working memory (WM), a type of executive attention: the ability to use attention to maintain or suppress short-term representations of information. Greater WM capacity also means an increased ability to use attention to overcome distraction and is predictive of performance on higher-order cognitive tasks. In this study, I hypothesized that, after eleven weeks of MF training, participants would have …

Numerical Analysis Of Tsv/Micro-Bump Deformation Due To Chip Misalignment And Thermal Processing In 3d Ic Packages, Richard Johnson

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Three-dimensional (3D) stacking of integrated circuits (ICs) is an enabling technology in the advancement of the microelectronics industry. 3D stacking enables increased device density per volume and improved electrical performance through short vertical interconnect paths. Mechanical reliability of 3D IC packages is critical due to the widespread use of electronic devices. Misalignment induced shear deformation of the through-silicon vias (TSV) and solder micro-bumps are simulated through an applied shearing action. Thermal effects due to coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch during processing are also studied to provide trends of stress and deformation fields. Reliability of the 3D chip stack, TSV …

Photonic Generation Of Microwave Signals : A Quantum Dot Mode Locked Laser As A Microwave Source, Georgios Atmatzakis Aug 2012

Photonic Generation Of Microwave Signals : A Quantum Dot Mode Locked Laser As A Microwave Source, Georgios Atmatzakis

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Microwave signals can be photonically generated inside a quantum dot, passively mode locked laser. In order for this laser to be used as a microwave source, a microwave interface was created and connected to the laser. To characterize the source, its output microwave impedance was measured by using the load-pull technique. Also, the device was characterized in terms of output power, frequency and linewidth. The output frequency of the generated signal was 5GHz with a linewidth <2MHz. The output power that was extracted was as high as -6dBm without any further amplification. An active antenna element was connected to the laser to transmit the generated microwave signal. In addition, the injection locking of the laser to an external source was studied and demonstrated, as a way to increase the stability of the output microwave signal and to amplify its power by combining the output signals of multiple locked sources. Further applications of the laser as a feeding source in an antenna array were studied by building a quantum dot laser fed active microwave antenna array with injection locked sources.

Quantifying The Contribution Of Bank Storage Due To An Alteration In Stream Stage, Jeffrey Samson Aug 2012

Quantifying The Contribution Of Bank Storage Due To An Alteration In Stream Stage, Jeffrey Samson

Civil Engineering ETDs

The desire to control rivers to reduce risks of flooding while providing water storage for municipal and agricultural uses has resulted in the disconnection of rivers from their floodplains. An important and often neglected outcome of this detachment is the loss of a plethora of important ecosystem services. This research was focused on answering the following questions related to riparian groundwater storage (bank storage): 1) What is the time to saturation (maximum storage) and time to release of bank storage water as the result of a flood pulse that overbanks a portion of the floodplain?; 2) How does soil stratigraphy …

An Overview Of Laser Operation And Modelocking Of A Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (Vecsel), Aaron Allen Aug 2012

An Overview Of Laser Operation And Modelocking Of A Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (Vecsel), Aaron Allen

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

VECSEL laser systems are important additions to the family of lasers. They exhibit a combination of desirable lasing features that are usually not simultaneously attainable. These features are high power, diffraction limited beam quality, intra-cavity frequency doubling, tunability, and ultrashort pulses generated from passive mode-locking. In this work, we give a brief overview of the VECSEL structure, previous VECSEL literature, how lasing in a VECSEL works, and how mode locking in a VECSEL works.

Will Brazil's Belo Monte Dam Get The Green Light?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Aug 2012

Will Brazil's Belo Monte Dam Get The Green Light?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

A Brazilian federal appeals court on Aug. 14 ordered a halt to construction on the controversial Belo Monte dam until indigenous groups are properly consulted, The Guardian reported. However, on Monday, the Supreme Court issued a preliminary ruling that allowed for work on the project to resume. How significant is the charge that the consultation process was not properly followed? Will local groups be able to reach an agreement with developers and the government, which argue that the project is necessary to meet the country's growing energy demand? How could the consultation processes be improved to avoid similar conflicts both …

Numerical Analysis Of Plastic Deformation In Metal-Ceramic Nanolayers During Cyclic Indentation, Caroline Bolton Blada Aug 2012

Numerical Analysis Of Plastic Deformation In Metal-Ceramic Nanolayers During Cyclic Indentation, Caroline Bolton Blada

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The indentation behavior of metal/ceramic nanolayered composites is studied nu- merically using the finite element method. Attention is devoted to cyclic response under fixed maximum and minimum loads, with the primary objective of examining the evolving plastic deformation in the ductile metal constrained by the hard ceramic layers. An axisymmetric model consisting of alternating aluminum (Al) and silicon carbide (SiC) thin films on a silicon (Si) substrate is indented by a conical diamond indenter. In this study, both rate-independent and rate-dependent plasticity models are considered. It is found that, in the multilayered material plastic deformation in the Al layers continues …

Oblique Shock Interactions With Gas Cylinder Interfaces, Ross White Aug 2012

Oblique Shock Interactions With Gas Cylinder Interfaces, Ross White

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This thesis presents an experimental study of fluid instabilities formed due to an oblique interatction of a shock wave with a cylindrical gas column seeded with glycol droplets. Two gases are injected into quiescent air to form the column. The first is sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) which generates the well-known Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability (RMI) when impulsively accelerated by a shock wave. This instability is formed due to the misalignment of the pressure and density gradients during the acceleration phase. The second is air. In this case, there is no macroscopic density gradient between the gas column and the surrounding air. Nonetheless, an …

Sensitivity Study Of Turbulent Flow Simulations Over A Rotating Disk, Michael Snider Aug 2012

Sensitivity Study Of Turbulent Flow Simulations Over A Rotating Disk, Michael Snider

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

With increasing demand for renewable energy, there is a need for accurate and reliable simulations of a flow around a wind turbine. To be of use as an engineering design and planning tool, such simulations should be conducted in a timely manner. This can be achieved if a flow is modeled with Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models. To reduce uncertainties associated with numerical simulations from the simulation results, one has to ensure the convergence of results with respect to various simulation parameters. In this paper, the effect of the size of computational domain, boundary proximity, grid stretching, and initial grid wall …
