Influence Of Implementing Straps On Pulsed Relativistic Magnetron Operation, David R. Galbreath Aug 2012

Influence Of Implementing Straps On Pulsed Relativistic Magnetron Operation, David R. Galbreath

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A simulation study on the effect of applying straps to an A6 relativistic magnetron was conducted to determine potential use in reducing mode competition. Several strap configurations were evaluated against the basic anode-endcap geometry of the A6 magnetron as well as the open anode geometry. The effect of cathode radius on the primary mode of oscillation was also investigated in an effort to determine whether the use of straps could reduce mode competition. Typically the magnetron oscillates in the \u03c0-mode at small cathode radii and 2\u03c0-mode at large radii. In general, strapping appears to offer several advantages for use in …

Novel Haptic Interface For Viewing 3d Images, Mauricio Gomez Aguinaga Aug 2012

Novel Haptic Interface For Viewing 3d Images, Mauricio Gomez Aguinaga

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In recent years there has been an explosion of devices and systems capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D images. While these systems provide an improved experience over traditional bidimensional displays they often fall short on user immersion. Usually these systems only improve depth perception by relying on the stereopsis phenomenon. We propose a system that improves the user experience and immersion by having a position dependent rendering of the scene and the ability to touch the scene. This system uses depth maps to represent the geometry of the scene. Depth maps can be easily obtained on the rendering process or can …

Extensive research exists as regards both the various versions of the narrative of La hystoria de la reyna Sebilla and more generally the …

Direct Writing Of Au Nanoneedles Array On Glass By Confined Laser Spinning, Yingling Yang, Dong Lin, Gary J. Cheng Aug 2012

Direct Writing Of Au Nanoneedles Array On Glass By Confined Laser Spinning, Yingling Yang, Dong Lin, Gary J. Cheng

Birck and NCN Publications

Generation of gold nanoneedles on glass by confined laser spinning was explored by using a nanosecond pulsed laser. When the coated Au thin film was irradiated under the confinement of glass, gold nanoneedles were formed by spreading the molten liquid of gold under high pressure. The mechanism of the confined laser spinning process is studied. The maximum velocity and instability of molten liquid during confined laser spinning were estimated. The diameter of nanoneedles can be controlled by changing the thickness of coated gold thin film. Large scale of gold nanoneedles can be formed by this direct writing method and collected …

Control Of Reflectance And Transmittance In Scattering And Curvilinear Hyperbolic Metamaterials, T. U. Tumkur, J. K. Kitur, B. Chu, Lei Gu, V. A. Podolskiy, Evgenii E. Narimanov, M. A. Noginov Aug 2012

Control Of Reflectance And Transmittance In Scattering And Curvilinear Hyperbolic Metamaterials, T. U. Tumkur, J. K. Kitur, B. Chu, Lei Gu, V. A. Podolskiy, Evgenii E. Narimanov, M. A. Noginov

Birck and NCN Publications

We demonstrate reduced reflectance in curvilinear lamellar hyperbolic metamaterials as well as planar hyperbolic metamaterials consisting of metal/dielectric multilayers, with scatterers deposited on the top. The reduced reflectance is accompanied by a significant enhancement in transmission along with non-reciprocity of transmittance in forward and backward propagating directions. The observed experimental behavior is qualitatively similar to the results of numerical solutions of Maxwell equations. The findings of this study pave the way to a variety of important applications, including broadband enhancement of light trapping in photovoltaic devices. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Household Food Security In Developing Countries: Understanding The Role Of Dynamic Natural And Social Systems, Steven Archambault Aug 2012

Household Food Security In Developing Countries: Understanding The Role Of Dynamic Natural And Social Systems, Steven Archambault

Economics ETDs

The lack of consistent and reliable levels of nutritious food may be one of the most brutal results of poverty. Beyond the human suffering, the lack of food security has damaging economic consequences, making it difficult for communities to break poverty cycles. This dissertation studies the various decisions made by households, governments, and the international community that impact household food security. Food security, the long-term availability of nutritious foods, is essentially achieved through a trade-off of consumption and investment in assets and capital to ensure future availability of food. Chapter 2 builds an optimal control model to analyze the trade-offs …

Quantum Algorithms, Symmetry, And Fourier Analysis, Aaron Jafar Denney Aug 2012

Quantum Algorithms, Symmetry, And Fourier Analysis, Aaron Jafar Denney

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

I describe the role of symmetry in two quantum algorithms, with a focus on how that symmetry is made manifest by the Fourier transform. The Fourier transform can be considered in a wider context than the familiar one of functions on Rn or Z/nZ; instead it can be defined for an arbitrary group where it is known as representation theory. The first quantum algorithm solves an instance of the hidden subgroup problem--distinguishing conjugates of the Borel subgroup from each other in groups related to PSL(2; q). I use the symmetry of the subgroups under consideration to reduce the problem to …

Study On Spontaneous Emission In Complex Multilayered Plasmonic System Via Surface Integral Equation Approach With Layered Medium Green's Function, Yongpin P. Chen, Wei E.I. Sha, Wallace C.H. Choy, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A rigorous surface integral equation approach is proposed to study the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter embedded in a multi-layered plasmonic structure with the presence of arbitrarily shaped metallic nanoscatterers. With the aid of the Fermi's golden rule, the spontaneous emission of the emitter can be calculated from the local density of states, which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the dyadic Green's function of the whole electromagnetic system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, a surface integral equation is established taking into account the scattering from the metallic nanoscatterers. Particularly, the modeling of the planar …

Peridynamic Constitutive Model For Concrete, Bhanu Kiran Tuniki Aug 2012

Peridynamic Constitutive Model For Concrete, Bhanu Kiran Tuniki

Civil Engineering ETDs

Peridynamics, as originally proposed by Silling in 1998, is a spatio-temporal integral reformulation of the classical partial differential equations of motion. In contrast with the classical theory, the concepts of stress and strain are not needed in peridynamics. The original bond-based peridynamic theory has several drawbacks including being limited to modeling materials with Poissons ratio of one-quarter. In 2007, Silling generalized his model by introducing state-based peridynamics. Sau et al. proposed a micropolar model for concrete in 2007, but were unable to fully implement the model. In 2011, Sakhavand developed software called pdQ that is capable of modeling micropolar peridynamics. …

Numerical And Analytical Studies Of Electromagnetic Waves: Hermite Methods, Supercontinuum Generation, And Multiple Poles In The Sem, Xi Chen Aug 2012

Numerical And Analytical Studies Of Electromagnetic Waves: Hermite Methods, Supercontinuum Generation, And Multiple Poles In The Sem, Xi Chen

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The dissertation consists of three parts: Hermite methods, scattering from a lossless sphere, and analysis of supercontinuum generation. Hermite methods are a new class of arbitrary order algorithms to solve partial differential equations (PDE). In the first chapter, we discuss the fundamentals of Hermite methods in great detail. Hermite interpolation is discussed as well as the different time evolution schemes including Hermite-Taylor and Hermite-Runge-Kutta schemes. Further, an order adaptive Hermite method for initial value problems is described. Analytical studies and numerical simulations in both 1D and 2D are presented. To handle geometry, a hybrid Hermite discontinuous Galerkin method is introduced. …

A Generalization Of The Mader-Helgason Inversion Formulas For Radon Transforms, Y. A. Antipov, B. Rubin Aug 2012

A Generalization Of The Mader-Helgason Inversion Formulas For Radon Transforms, Y. A. Antipov, B. Rubin

Faculty Publications

In 1927, Philomena Mader derived elegant inversion formulas for the hyperplane Radon transform on ℝ n. These formulas differ from the original ones by Radon and seem to be forgotten. We generalize Mader's formulas to totally geodesic Radon transforms in any dimension on arbitrary constant curvature space. Another new interesting inversion formula for the k-plane transform was presented in the recent book "Integral geometry and Radon transform" by S. Helgason. We extend this formula to arbitrary constant curvature space. The paper combines tools of integral geometry and complex analysis. © 2012 American Mathematical Society.
