An Evidence Based Case Study Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Girish Gupta, Santosh Singh Sep 2012

An Evidence Based Case Study Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Girish Gupta, Santosh Singh

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has been the most frequent reason for elderly men undergoing surgery. BPH symptoms range from least voiding difficulties to urinary retention and renal failure. In this case of BPH, subjective measures such as changes in International Prostatic Symptom Score / American Urological Association Assessment (IPSS/AUA), and objective measures such as changes in prostate size and urinary flow rate were assessed, as the successful management and treatment of BPH should seek both to improve symptoms and prevent disease progression. The case was treated with Lycopodium, a homoeopathic medicine reported here. This case shows the efficacy of medicine …

A Model Order Reduction Method For Lightly Damped State Space Systems, Matthew Cappello Sep 2012

A Model Order Reduction Method For Lightly Damped State Space Systems, Matthew Cappello

Theses

This paper introduces a model order reduction method that takes advantage of the near orthogonality of lightly damped modes in a system and the modal separation of diagonalized models to reduce the model order of flexible systems in both continuous and discrete time. The reduction method is computationally fast and cheap, not requiring any singular value decompositions or large matrix operations. Numeric solutions to the infinite time Lyapunov equations are presented, and used to solve for the observability and controllability grammians of diagonalized models. Four different modal importance calculations are produced from the diagonalized model's grammians and are compared to …

A Visualization Of A New Conceptual Sustainable Building Using Green Materials, Tzu-Fang Tseng Sep 2012

A Visualization Of A New Conceptual Sustainable Building Using Green Materials, Tzu-Fang Tseng

Theses

The project was inspired by a 9-story building constructed from plastic bottles, which was hailed as a spectacular showpiece for the Taipei International Flora Expo. This building weighs 50 percent less than a conventional structure. It is reconfigurable, energy saving and very low in CO2. The main intent of the project is to utilize a surreal story in an animation to illustrate the concept of reusing hundreds of thousands of old bottles around the world is a new green method of building which is one way to protect our planet. The resulting product is a short film that can be …

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell Sep 2012

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell

Theses

Cataract, the leading cause of blindness worldwide, has motivated a variety of investigations into the behavior of concentrated mixtures of eye lens proteins. While there has been success in modeling single protein solutions, a convenient model for mixtures is needed. We apply an analytically solvable sticky-hard sphere model to aqueous mixtures of alpha and gamma crystallin, two of the predominant proteins found in the mammalian eye lens. Developed by Baxter and Barboy, this model incorporates some of the fundamental characteristics of realistic mixtures, namely, variation in size and intermolecular attraction strength among each component. We show that light scattering intensities …

English Architectural Landscapes And Metonymy In Hollinghurst's The Stranger's Child, Bart Eeckhout Sep 2012

English Architectural Landscapes And Metonymy In Hollinghurst's The Stranger's Child, Bart Eeckhout

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "English Architectural Landscapes and Metonymy in Hollinghurst's The Stranger's Child" Bart Eeckhout analyzes Alan Hollinghurst's novel in light of Hollinghurst's interest in architectural representation. Eeckhout analyzes the novel's principal scenario of architectural change in the course of the twentieth century and postulates that Hollinghurst employs unconventional genre codes and queers the social realist novel, the family saga, and the country house novel. Eeckhout analyzes The Stranger's Child as a comedy of metonymies which impresses upon its readers the structural necessity of diverse perspectives, labyrinthine metonymical constructions, and the dynamics of place. Further, Eeckhout argues that Hollinghurst …

Sixteen Strong Identifications Of Biblical Persons (Plus Nine Other Ids) In Authentic Northwest Semitic Inscriptions From Before 539 B.C.E., Lawrence J. Mykytiuk Sep 2012

Sixteen Strong Identifications Of Biblical Persons (Plus Nine Other Ids) In Authentic Northwest Semitic Inscriptions From Before 539 B.C.E., Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Research Publications

This revised conference paper presents the strongest results of the author's published dissertation as corrected and updated in a journal article published in 2010 and as updated using a 2011 essay. In Northwest Semitic inscriptions which are known to be authentic, using sound protocols, one can identify with certainty at least ten persons from before the Persian era who are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Another six such persons can be identified with virtual certainty, for a total of sixteen strong identifications (IDs).

Five other authentic inscriptions offer an additional seven IDs which, while not quite certain, are at least …

Blurring The Boundaries Between City And Countryside In Photography, Steven Jacobs Sep 2012

Blurring The Boundaries Between City And Countryside In Photography, Steven Jacobs

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Blurring the Boundaries between City and Countryside in Photography" Steven Jacobs discusses how, in recent decades, a new landscape has emerged in which the differences between city and countryside have been blurred. As a result, the urbanized environment is increasingly viewed and interpreted as a landscape. It is because of the hybridity of this contemporary cityscape that urban planners such as Mirko Zardini have argued for a revaluation of the notion of the picturesque linked with a sensitivity to irregularity and a mixture of the cultural and the natural. Since the late 1960s, the post-urban landscape has …

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2012

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Landscape, Culture, and Education in Defoe's Robinson Crusoe" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert discuss Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe as a narrative that translates nature and our dealings with it into a literary text. Vandeermeersche and Soetaert postulate that the novel can be read as a quintessential fable of humans' cultivation of nature and the creation of individuality, which, at the same time, provides its readers with strategies for describing processes such as education. Robinson Crusoe and its characters, metaphors, and scenarios function in the "auto-communication" of culture as an enduring equipment for living (Burke), a company …
