Using Partial Least Squares In Operations Management Research: A Practical Guideline And Summary Of Past Research, David Xiaosong Peng, Fujun Lai Sep 2012

Using Partial Least Squares In Operations Management Research: A Practical Guideline And Summary Of Past Research, David Xiaosong Peng, Fujun Lai

Faculty Publications

The partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modeling (SEM) has been widely adopted in business research fields such as information systems, consumer behavior, and marketing. The use of PLS in the field of operations management is also growing. However, questions still exist among some operations management researchers regarding whether and how PLS should be used. To address these questions, our study provides a practical guideline for using PLS and uses examples from the operations management literature to demonstrate how the specific points in this guideline can be applied. In addition, our study reviews and summarizes the use of …

The Way Forward For Girls’ Education In Afghanistan, Carolyn Kissane Sep 2012

The Way Forward For Girls’ Education In Afghanistan, Carolyn Kissane

Journal of International Women's Studies

Lack of rights and access to education are problems that have challenged Afghan women throughout the history of their country. True political reform in Afghanistan is contingent upon the solving of these problems, as women’s education is essential not only for the development of a more stable government, but also for raising living standards. Women’s lack of access to education in Afghanistan is reinforced by beliefs rooted in the religious and familial tradition of community. Although Islamic ideologies have often been distorted and manipulated by leaders to control and subjugate the lives of women, Islam cannot be ignored in the …

“Subjects Of Change”: Feminist Geopolitics And Gendered Truth-Telling In Guatemala, Rebecca Patterson-Markowitz, Elizabeth Oglesby, Sallie Marston Sep 2012

“Subjects Of Change”: Feminist Geopolitics And Gendered Truth-Telling In Guatemala, Rebecca Patterson-Markowitz, Elizabeth Oglesby, Sallie Marston

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper explores the often-undervalued role of gender in transitional justice mechanisms and the importance of women’s struggles and agency in that regard. We focus on the efforts of the women’s movement in Guatemala to address questions of justice and healing for survivors of gendered violence during Guatemala’s 36-year internal armed conflict. We discuss how the initial transitional justice measures of documenting gendered war crimes in the context of a genocide were subsequently taken up by the women’s movement and how their endeavors to further expose sexual violence have resulted in notable interventions. Interviews with key organizational activists as well …

Mathematical Problem Posing As A Measure Of Curricular Effect On Students' Learning, Jinfa Cai, John Moyer, Ning Wang, Stephen Hwang, Bikai Nie, Tammy Garber Sep 2012

Mathematical Problem Posing As A Measure Of Curricular Effect On Students' Learning, Jinfa Cai, John Moyer, Ning Wang, Stephen Hwang, Bikai Nie, Tammy Garber

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this study, we used problem posing as a measure of the effect of middle-school curriculum on students' learning in high school. Students who had used a standards-based curriculum in middle school performed equally well or better in high school than students who had used more traditional curricula. The findings from this study not only show evidence of strengths one might expect of students who used the standards-based reform curriculum but also bolster the feasibility and validity of problem posing as a measure of curriculum effect on student learning. In addition, the findings of this study demonstrate the usefulness of …

On Order Statistics For Gs-Distributions, M. M. Mohie El-Din, M. M. Amein, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, a class of distributions is used to establish several recurrence relations satisfied by single and product moments of order statistics and progressive Type-II right censoring. The recurrence relations for moments of some specific distributions including uniform (a, b); exponential (λ); generalized exponential (α, λ, ν); beta (1, b); beta (b, 1); logistic (α, β) and other distributions from order statistics and progressive Type-II right censoring can be obtained as special cases. A short explanation of GS-distribution can be found in reference [27]. As an example, means, variances and covariances …

H-Coloring Tori, John Engbers, David Galvin Sep 2012

H-Coloring Tori, John Engbers, David Galvin

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

For graphs G and H, an H-coloring of G is a function from the vertices of G to the vertices of H that preserves adjacency. H-colorings encode graph theory notions such as independent sets and proper colorings, and are a natural setting for the study of hard-constraint models in statistical physics. We study the set of H-colorings of the even discrete torus View the MathML source, the graph on vertex set {0,…,m−1}d (m even) with two strings adjacent if they differ by 1 (mod m) on one coordinate and agree on all others. This is a bipartite graph, with bipartition …

Analyzing Multiple-Probe Microarray: Estimation And Application Of Gene Expression Indexes, Mehdi Maadooliat, Jianhua Z. Huang, Jianhua Hu

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Gene expression index estimation is an essential step in analyzing multiple probe microarray data. Various modeling methods have been proposed in this area. Amidst all, a popular method proposed in Li and Wong (2001) is based on a multiplicative model, which is similar to the additive model discussed in Irizarry et al. (2003a) at the logarithm scale. Along this line, Hu et al. (2006) proposed data transformation to improve expression index estimation based on an ad hoc entropy criteria and naive grid search approach. In this work, we re-examined this problem using a new profile likelihood-based transformation estimation approach that …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Narratives of Loss and Order and Imaging the Belgian Landscape 1900-1945" Bruno Notteboom and David Peleman analyze a number of publications on landscape, focusing on narratives constructed by means of landscape images published in Belgium. With the work of Jean Massart and Emile Vanderwelde as a point of departure, Notteboom and Peleman discuss popularizing publications in the fields of botany, agricultural education, and tourism, as well as an urban planning. They address the three realms of landscape narratives defined by Matthew Potteiger and Jamie Purinton as story, context/intertext, and discourse. Notteboom and Peleman distinguish three recurrent operations …

"Perpetual Trusts: The Walking Dead" And "Congress Should Effectively Curb Gst Exemption For Perpetual Trusts.", Calvin H. Johnson, Lawrence W. Waggoner

Law & Economics Working Papers

In separate but complementary letters to the editor of Tax Notes, Calvin Johnson (University of Texas School of Law) and Lawrence Waggoner (University of Michigan Law School) respond to an article by Dennis Belcher and seven other practicing attorneys that defend the GST exemption for perpetual trusts. In Federal Tax Rules Should Not Be Used to Limit Trust Duration, 126 Tax Notes 832 (Aug 13, 2012), the attorneys argue that the duration of a trust is a state law issue. Their article is actually a response to a Shelf Project article: Lawrence W. Waggoner, Effectively Curbing the GST Exemption for …

Toward The Printed World: Additive Manufacturing And Implications For National Security, Connor M. Mcnulty, Neyla Arnas, Thomas A. Campbell

Defense Horizons

This paper looks at the rapid advancement of additive manufacturing (3D printing) and its implications for national security. As the technology becomes more affordable and widely accessible, it enables the production of complex components ranging from industrial materials to biomedical applications. Additive manufacturing can enhance military effectiveness by reducing production time, cost, weight, and logistical burdens while enabling on-demand, customized manufacturing. At the same time, the proliferation of this technology presents challenges, as adversaries and non-state actors may gain access to similar capabilities, raising legal, regulatory, and security concerns. The paper stresses the need for policymakers to anticipate both the …

The Erotic Conception Of Ancient Greek Landscapes And The Heterotopia Of The Symposium, Jo Heirman Sep 2012

The Erotic Conception Of Ancient Greek Landscapes And The Heterotopia Of The Symposium, Jo Heirman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Erotic Conception of Ancient Greek Landscapes and the Heterotopia of the Symposium" Jo Heirman discusses the conception of natural landscapes in ancient Greek lyric poetry from the seventh until the fifth century BC and its ideological background. Heirman analyzes lyric poems by Sappho, Ibycus, and Theognis in which landscapes of fields, gardens, and meadows are presented. Heirman's analysis reveals a recurrent erotic pattern in the conception of ancient Greek landscapes constructed as places which suggest various forms of eroticism ranging from lesbian desire to homosexuality. Further, Heirman discusses the preoccupation with eroticism by suggesting a connection …

Study Of The Effectiveness Of Response To Intervention Used In Elementary School, Michelle Maskill

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to study the effectiveness of Response to Intervention strategies as they pertain to students’ scores on the Northwestern Evaluation Association (NWEA) test. This study sought to answer the following questions: 1) What are the different tiers of a three-tier RTI model? 2) Is one tier more effective than the others? 3) How does participation in the RTI model affect scores on the NWEA? and 4) What is the long-term effectiveness of participation in RTI, after services have been discontinued? This was a study conducted over four years in a select elementary school; the subjects …

Atovaquone Ameliorate Gastrointestinal Toxoplasmosis Complications In A Pregnancy Model, Helieh S. Oz, Thomas Tobin Sep 2012

Atovaquone Ameliorate Gastrointestinal Toxoplasmosis Complications In A Pregnancy Model, Helieh S. Oz, Thomas Tobin

Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Toxoplasma is an important source of foodborne hospitalization with no safe and effective therapy against chronic or congenital Toxopalsmosis. Atovaquone is a drug of choice but not approved for use in congenital Toxoplasmosis. We hypothesized atovaquone to be safe and effective against feto-maternal Toxoplasmosis.

Material/Methods: Programmed pregnant mice were i.p. infected with 50–2400 Tachyzoites from Type II strain (clone PTG). Dams were treated daily with atovaquone or sham and monitored for pain, and complications.

Results: Dams developed pain related abdominal hypersensitivity (allodynia) to mechanical stimuli in a Tachyzoites dose dependent manner. Infected dams were anemic and exhibited ascities and …

Checkpoint Watch: Bureaucracy And Resistance At The Israel/Palestinean Border, Irus Braverman Sep 2012

Checkpoint Watch: Bureaucracy And Resistance At The Israel/Palestinean Border, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

This essay sketches my personal impressions of the changes that have occurred over the last decade in Israeli checkpoints in and around Jerusalem. These changes are both in the physical design of the checkpoints as well as in their human management. My particular focus is on the women’s human rights organization MachsomWatch. The role of MachsomWatch has changed in a way that parallels the solidification and the bureaucratization of the border. Nowadays, MachsomWatch women - originally avid protestors of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank - have, despite themselves, become a routine feature in the occupational apparatus. This essay’s …

Camper Outcomes Increase Regardless Of Session Length: Beyond Anecdotal Evidence Of Increased Competence, Independence And Friendship Skills, Mark F. Roark Sep 2012

Camper Outcomes Increase Regardless Of Session Length: Beyond Anecdotal Evidence Of Increased Competence, Independence And Friendship Skills, Mark F. Roark

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Session length may not be as vital to the accomplishment of developmental outcomes as directors are anecdotally sharing. Interestingly, no empirical support exists for the conventional wisdom that longer sessions have better outcomes than shorter sessions for campers. Dimock and Hendry (1929) found that campers’ level of development in general did not significantly vary whether they were at camp one or two months. They cautioned that this finding might not appropriately represent the actual effect of camp due to limitations in the measurement tool. Comparably, ACA’s Directions (2005) reported that session length was not a reliable predictor of camper developmental …

Foraging Ecology Of Fall-Migrating Shorebirds In The Illinois River Valley, Randolph V. Smith, Joshua Stafford, Aaron P. Yetter, Michelle M. Horath, Christopher S. Hine, Jeffery P. Hover Sep 2012

Foraging Ecology Of Fall-Migrating Shorebirds In The Illinois River Valley, Randolph V. Smith, Joshua Stafford, Aaron P. Yetter, Michelle M. Horath, Christopher S. Hine, Jeffery P. Hover

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Populations of many shorebird species appear to be declining in North America, and food resources at stopover habitats may limit migratory bird populations. We investigated body condition of, and foraging habitat and diet selection by 4 species of shorebirds in the central Illinois River valley during fall migrations 2007 and 2008 (Killdeer [Charadrius vociferus], Least Sandpiper [Calidris minutilla], Pectoral Sandpiper [Calidris melanotos], and Lesser Yellowlegs [Tringa flavipes]). All species except Killdeer were in good to excellent condition, based on size-corrected body mass and fat scores. Shorebird diets were dominated by invertebrate taxa from Orders Diptera and Coleoptera. Additionally, Isopoda, Hemiptera, …
