Towards An Urban Narrative Layers Approach To Decipher The Language Of City Films, François Penz Sep 2012

Towards An Urban Narrative Layers Approach To Decipher The Language Of City Films, François Penz

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Towards an Urban Narrative Layers Approach to Decipher the Language of City Films" François Penz investigates how film narratives may provide us with the perceptual tools to grasp complex urban phenomena. He posits that, in order to elicit the mechanisms that make up the projected image of city films, new analytical tools need to be devised. Penz demonstrates that the cinematic image is composed of a succession of narrative layers and suggests that the eye of the unsuspecting film spectator encounters a succession of narrative layers recomposed seamlessly into a single movie image on the screen. Penz …

Tell-Tale Landscapes And Mythical Chronotopes In Urban Designs For Twenty-First Century Paris, Bart Keunen, Sofie Verraest Sep 2012

Tell-Tale Landscapes And Mythical Chronotopes In Urban Designs For Twenty-First Century Paris, Bart Keunen, Sofie Verraest

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Tell-tale Landscapes and Mythical Chronotopes in Urban Designs for Twenty-first Century Paris" Bart Keunen and Sofie Verraest outline a methodology for the examination of narrative structures projected onto landscapes and exemplify it by analyzing four urbanist projects submitted for the international workshop for Greater Paris launched by President of France Nicholas Sarkozy in 2009. Keunen and Verraest focus on phantasmagorical urban spaces considered to be profane remnants of what Ernst Cassirer referred to as "mythical thought." Since the spatiotemporal structure of these phantasmagorical places is understood as fundamental to their affective appeal and seductiveness, they are treated …

Mediation Advocacy For Civil Disputes In The Subordinate Courts: Perspectives From The Bench, Dorcas Quek Anderson, Kenneth Choo Sep 2012

Mediation Advocacy For Civil Disputes In The Subordinate Courts: Perspectives From The Bench, Dorcas Quek Anderson, Kenneth Choo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

“The New Lawyer: How Settlement is Transforming the Practice of Law” by JulieMacFarlane was reviewed in the May issue of the Law Gazette, in conjunction withthe introduction of a “Presumption of ADR” for civil disputes in the SubordinateCourts. MacFarlane describes the emergence of a new advocacy focusing on holisticproblem-solving. The reviewer posed a series of pertinent questions for theSingapore legal profession, “[W]e are all familiar with the popular notion of litigationlawyers as rights warriors. But the litigation lawyer as a conflict resolver? Is he or shean imaginary character or an emerging reality?”

The Real, The Spectacle, And The In-Between: Architecture As A Stage For Reality, Chelsea Adelson Sep 2012

The Real, The Spectacle, And The In-Between: Architecture As A Stage For Reality, Chelsea Adelson

Architecture Theses and Projects

The goal of the project is to explore the space in between as a place of activity. The project will compare the spectacle and reality through a theater and public plaza near Chinatown and the theater district of Boston. The theater is accompanied by a small acting school that uses both an interior venue and the plaza as stages. The theater is focused on the awareness of reality through the spectacle of performance while the public plaza can “turn the artificiality of everyday situations into a theatrical situation” and bring life to the streets. Everyday life is put on display.

Competitive Abilities In Experimental Microcosms Are Accurately Predicted By A Demographic Index For R*, Ebony G. Murrell, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Resource competition theory predicts that R*, the equilibrium resource amount yielding zero growth of a consumer population, should predict species' competitive abilities for that resource. This concept has been supported for unicellular organisms, but has not been well-tested for metazoans, probably due to the difficulty of raising experimental populations to equilibrium and measuring population growth rates for species with long or complex life cycles. We developed an index (R-index) of R* based on demography of one insect cohort, growing from egg to adult in a non-equilibrium setting, and tested whether R-index yielded accurate predictions of competitive abilities using mosquitoes as …
