Functional Analysis Of Three Arabidopsis Argonautes Using Slicer-Defective Mutants, Alberto Carbonell, Noah Fahlgren, Hernan Garcia-Ruiz, Kerrigan B. Gilbert, Taiowa A. Montgomery, Tammy Nguyen, Josh T. Cuperus, James C. Carrington

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In RNA-directed silencing pathways, ternary complexes result from small RNA-guided ARGONAUTE (AGO) associating with target transcripts. Target transcripts are often silenced through direct cleavage (slicing), destabilization through slicerindependent turnover mechanisms, and translational repression. Here, wild-type and active-site defective forms of several Arabidopsis thaliana AGO proteins involved in posttranscriptional silencing were used to examine several AGO functions, including small RNA binding, interaction with target RNA, slicing or destabilization of target RNA, secondary small interfering RNA formation, and antiviral activity. Complementation analyses in ago mutant plants revealed that the catalytic residues of AGO1, AGO2, and AGO7 are required to restore the defects …

Testing An Empathy Model Of Guest-Directed Citizenship And Counterproductive Behaviours In The Hospitality Industry: Findings From Three Hotels, Violet Ho, Naina Gupta Sep 2012

Testing An Empathy Model Of Guest-Directed Citizenship And Counterproductive Behaviours In The Hospitality Industry: Findings From Three Hotels, Violet Ho, Naina Gupta

Management Faculty Publications

This research proposes and tests an empathy model of guest-directed discretionary behaviors (i.e., citizenship and counterproductive behaviors) using two studies conducted in three hotels. Building on the two-stage model of empathic mediation, we examined the mediating role of empathic concern in the relationship between perspective taking and both forms of discretionary behaviors in Study 1. Support for this mediated model was found in relation to citizenship behaviors but not for counterproductive behaviors. Study 2 was conducted to extend these findings using peer-reports of discretionary behaviors, and to apply an interactional psychology perspective to predict guest-directed counterproductive behaviors. We drew upon …

Indot Construction Inspection Priorities, Ali Mostafavi, Dulcy M. Abraham

JTRP Technical Reports

In the last decade, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has experienced an increase in their construction projects (e.g., INDOT’s construction spending was $789 million in 2006 and increased to $1,081.4 million in 2010); while the level of its in-house inspection staff and resources has either remained the same or declined. There are different strategies to deal with the need for construction inspection resources and they may include strategies such as outsourcing the inspection of construction activities and using quality control and quality assurance certification programs to reduce the need for in-process inspection. One strategy that could reduce the inspection …

Resource‐Based Habitat Associations In A Neotropical Liana Community, James W. Dalling, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Claire Baldeck, Kyle E. Harms, Robert John, Scott A. Mangan, Elena Lobo, Joseph B. Yavitt, Stephen P. Hubbell

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Summary

1. Lianas are a conspicuous element of many tropical forests, accounting for up to 40% of woody stem density and 20% of species richness in seasonal forests. However, lianas have seldom been surveyed at sufficiently large spatial scales to allow an assessment of the importance of habitat variables in structuring liana communities.

2. We compare the association patterns of 82 liana species and an equivalent sample of tree species on the 50 ha Forest Dynamics Project plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, with topographic habitat variables (high and low plateau, slope, swamp and streamside), and thirteen mapped soil chemical …

The Problem Of Measuring Legal Change, With Application To Bell Atlantic V. Twombly, William Hubbard Sep 2012

The Problem Of Measuring Legal Change, With Application To Bell Atlantic V. Twombly, William Hubbard

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Measuring legal change--i.e., change in the way that judges decide cases--presents a vexing problem. In response to a change in the behavior of courts, plaintiffs and defendants will change their patterns of filing and settling cases. Priest and Klein's (1984) selection model predicts that no matter how favorable or unfavorable the legal standard is to plaintiffs, the rate at which plaintiffs prevail in litigation will not pre- dictably change; thus, legal change cannot be measured with data on court outcomes. In this paper, I extend the selection model to develop a methodology for measuring legal change, even in the presence …

Evaluating Sustainability On The Cal Poly Campus: Attitudes, Behaviors, Knowledge, Social Norms, And Social Desirability, Rebecca Sokoloski Sep 2012

Evaluating Sustainability On The Cal Poly Campus: Attitudes, Behaviors, Knowledge, Social Norms, And Social Desirability, Rebecca Sokoloski

Psychology and Child Development

Previous research has shown that attitudes and behavior towards sustainability are not correlated. Social factors including norms and desirability have been found to explain these results. One hundred and six students from California Polytechnic State University participated in this study. The survey used was composed of several sections: attitudes, behaviors, knowledge, social norms, social desirability, and a demographic section. Attitudes and behaviors were found to be correlated in this study. Knowledge and behavior towards sustainability was not found to be correlated as expected. Participants’ attitudes were correlated with friends’ and families’ but not professors’ and peers’ attitudes. Participants’ behaviors were …

The Effect Of Vessel Depth, Diameter, And Location On Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Longevity., J Matthew Fields, Anthony J Dean, Raleigh W Todman, Arthur K Au, Kenton L Anderson, Bon S Ku, Jesse M Pines, Nova L Panebianco

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheters (USGPIVs) have been observed to have poor durability. The current study sets out to determine whether vessel characteristics (depth, diameter, and location) predict USGPIV longevity.

METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on a prospectively gathered database of patients who underwent USGPIV placement in an urban, tertiary care emergency department. All patients in the database had a 20-gauge, 48-mm-long catheter placed under ultrasound guidance. The time and reason for USGPIV removal were extracted by retrospective chart review. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed.

RESULTS: After 48 hours from USGPIV placement, 32% (48/151) had failed prematurely, 24% …

Building Bridges, Building Power: Developments In Institution-Based Community Organizing, Richard L. Wood, Brad Fulton, Kathryn Partridge

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

Community organizing in America is alive and well and being vigorously practiced in the version we call institution- based community organizing.' This national study shows that in the last decade institution- based community organizing has significantly increased its power base as it continues to bridge divides that deeply be- devil American politics—-divides of racial and ethnic identity, religion, socio-economic status, geography, and immigrant-na- tive background. This study details the dynamic expansion of the field over the last decade, outlines the impres- sive 'bridging social capital' it generates, discusses ways it has overcome the strategic limita- tions that previously undermined the …

Studies Of Drought Tolerance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Cultivars In Nebraska, Sumardi Bin Abdul Hamid Sep 2012

Studies Of Drought Tolerance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Cultivars In Nebraska, Sumardi Bin Abdul Hamid

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In Nebraska, about 75% of the wheat production is in the western half of the state, and about 92% of the winter wheat acreage is in dryland production, where productivity is limited by low and/or uncertain rainfall. We have investigated the effects of water stress on few established winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) cultivars, which are known for their superior adaptation to either rainfed or irrigated wheat production systems in western Nebraska. We also began a study to investigate the variation in the root system architecture to confer drought tolerance in winter wheat. The objectives of this study were …

Individuals With Non-Specific Low Back Pain In An Active Episode Demonstrate Temporally Altered Torque Responses And Direction-Specific Enhanced Muscle Activity Following Unexpected Balance Perturbations, Stephanie L. Jones, Juvena R. Hitt, Michael J. Desarno, Sharon M. Henry Sep 2012

Individuals With Non-Specific Low Back Pain In An Active Episode Demonstrate Temporally Altered Torque Responses And Direction-Specific Enhanced Muscle Activity Following Unexpected Balance Perturbations, Stephanie L. Jones, Juvena R. Hitt, Michael J. Desarno, Sharon M. Henry

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Individuals with a history of non-specific low back pain (LBP) while in a quiescent pain period demonstrate altered automatic postural responses (APRs) characterized by reduced trunk torque contributions and increased co-activation of trunk musculature. However, it is unknown whether these changes preceded or resulted from pain. To further delineate the relationship between cyclic pain recurrence and APRs, we quantified postural responses following multi-directional support surface translations, in individuals with non-specific LBP, following an active pain episode. Sixteen subjects with and 16 without LBP stood on two force plates that were translated unexpectedly in 12 directions. Net joint torques of the …
