Study On Effects Of Surface Modification On Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) (Pmma) Surface / Wan Nurlina Wan Yahya, Wan Yahya Wan Nurlina
Student Works (2010-2019)
This report presents study on photochemical and wet chemical surface modifications of poly(methy methacrylate) (PMMA) by means of UV (ultraviolet) irradiation and NaOH (sodium hydroxide), respectively. The PMMA solid substrate was prepared by PMMA solution casting on glass wafer resulting in PMMA thin films and commercial PMMA sheets. Both kinds of solid substrate were subjected to two different surface modifications techniques so as to yield carboxylic acid groups that enhanced PMMA surface hydrophilicity. The changes of surface properties of PMMA upon modifications were studied by non-spectral analyses which were contact angle measurement and Toiludine Blue (TB) assay. The findings reveal …

Numerical Simulation Of Bileaflet Heart Valve Prostheses In Aortic Position / Kamalasrinny Radhakrisnnan, Radhakrisnnan Kamalasrinny
Student Works (2010-2019)
Modeling and simulation of heart valves had been a demanding biomechanical problem due to the variation in anatomy of heart valves, 3D anisotropic material behavior and the pulsatile physiological behavior. The application of Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) models had become a key tool in optimizing the current existing designs of mechanical heart valves which eventually offers constructive and valuable information to the cardiologists. As such, a FSI numerical simulation was carried out to analyze the dynamic behaviors of the leaflets during its opening and closing stage with the presence of pulsatile aortic velocity blood flow and the local phenomena experienced …

Adaptive Thermal Comfort Model Study For Public Buildings In Urban Area / Chew Bee Teng, Bee Teng Chew
Student Works (2010-2019)
This thesis presents a comprehensive review of the literature of the Fanger’s PMV and adaptive thermal comfort models which were developed in different buildings and climates. Basically, the adaptive thermal comfort model is the correlation between the indoor neutral temperature and the outdoor temperature. An important premise of this thesis is the fact that the Fanger’s model underestimates the thermal impression in the actual case and thus the model is no longer valid for use in certain climates. As a consequence, many researchers have developed adaptive models from field studies for different climates and countries. However, there is still no …
Investigation Of Partnership And Engagement Methods To Increase Research Capability At Edith Cowan University, Darren Gibson
Investigation Of Partnership And Engagement Methods To Increase Research Capability At Edith Cowan University, Darren Gibson
Research outputs 2011
There is an increasing interest within all areas of research to collaborate, with networks and partnerships being used to develop research ideas and enhance research outcomes. A Collaboration Research Network (CRN) is one such method that can enhance a research system. Correspondingly Edith Cowan University (ECU) has established CRN activities in four areas of national importance; health, education, ICT and environment with a view to enhancing the University’s research output. However, CRN dynamics and mechanisms are complex and having a CRN per se does not guarantee enhanced research outcomes. This study will use both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate …

The Great Recession has caused many new attorneys to question their decisions to go to law school. The highly publicized decline in employment opportunities for lawyers has called into question the value of obtaining a law degree. The tightening of the economy has diminished the availability of entry-level jobs for law graduates across employment sectors. Large law firms are laying-off lawyers, bringing in smaller first year associate classes, hiring more contract and experienced lateral attorneys. Government entities and public interest organizations have suffered furloughs, and hiring freezes, and are relying more on volunteers than on new employees to get the …

The Status Of Teachers Unions: Are Rumors Of Their Demise Exaggerated?, Charles J. Russo
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Recent legislation raised questions about the status of teachers unions and public-sector collective bargaining. Although the changes in Florida, Idaho, and Tennessee occurred with a minimum of disruption, the same was not true in Ohio and Wisconsin. Voters in Ohio repudiated a law that would have placed significant limits on the rights of public employees to bargain collectively (McNeil 2011a). Conversely, voters in Wisconsin defeated a recall election intended to remove the governor and legislators who acted to curtail the bargaining power of teachers unions (Stein 2012).
Organized labor and collective bargaining in education have grown to the point at …

Ceos Off The Clock, Kevin F. Hallock

There is new and interesting academic work on how executives spend their time and the personal choices they make to maximize utility. From a compensation point of view, one issue that has been at the forefront with respect to executives is perks. One CEO compensation perk that has also received increased scrutiny but is surviving better than club memberships is the use of private aircraft. In a related April 2012 paper, "Executives' 'Off-The-Job' Behavior, Corporate Culture and Financial Reporting Risk" (National Bureau of Economic Research working paper), Robert Davidson, Abbie Smith and Aiyesha Dey consider other off-the-clock behaviors of CEOs …

Computer-Based Versus Paper-Pencil Modes Of Administration United States Government End Of Course Exams: Student Cumulative Grade Point Averages As Predictors Of Success, Barbara A. Ryan
Dissertations
Beginning with the No Child Left Behind federal legislation, states were required to use data to monitor and improve student achievement. For high schools, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education chose End of Course Exams (EOC) to demonstrate levels of student achievement. The policy changed from school choice of paper-pencil or computer-based testing to mandated computer-based testing. This study examined whether this decision best demonstrates the level of student mastery. Using high school EOC test scores for United States Government exams as the independent variable and high school cumulative grade point average (CGPA) as the dependent variable, the …

Effect Of Egf-Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor On Rab5 Function During Endocytosis, Ivan Jozic, Samar C. Saliba, M. Alejandro Barbieri
Biology Faculty Articles
Tyrosine autophosphorylation within the cytoplasmic tail of EGF-receptor is a key event, which in turn recruits several factors including Shc, Grb2 and Rin1 that are essential activities for receptor-mediated endocytosis and signaling. In this study, we demonstrated that treatment with AG1478, an EGF-receptor kinase inhibitor, blocked the formation of Rab5-positive endosomes as well as the activation of Rab5 upon addition of EGF. We also found that EGF-receptor catalytically inactive mutant failed to activate Rab5 upon EGF stimulation. Additionally, endosomal co-localization of Rab5 and EGF-receptor was inhibited by AG1478. Interestingly, AG1478 inhibitor did not block the formation of enlarged Rab5-positive endosomes …

Modified Administration Of The Wais-Iv For Visually Impaired Examiners: A Validity Study, Amy Pitchforth
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Opportunities in all areas of life including education, vocation, and access to general information have historically been slower for minorities. The visually impaired have continued to struggle with access to education, equal opportunities at work, and access to general information. Significantly fewer blind and visually impaired individuals pursue graduate education with the most commonly pursued graduate degree being psychology (American Federation for the Blind, 2010). A core area of graduate training [defined by the American Psychological Association (APA)] is declarative knowledge, which is not accessible for the visually impaired student for neurological assessments (Johnson-Greene, Braden, Dial, Fitzpatrick, Leung, Schneider, & …
The Impact Of Related Party Sales By Listed Chinese Firms On Earnings Informativeness And Analysts Forecasts, Jiwei Wang, Hongqi Yuan
The Impact Of Related Party Sales By Listed Chinese Firms On Earnings Informativeness And Analysts Forecasts, Jiwei Wang, Hongqi Yuan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Using a random sample of 140 of China's listed firms, we show an adverse impact of related party (RP) sales of goods and services on the usefulness of accounting earnings to investors and on the quality of earnings forecasts by financial analysts. Consistent with the contention that RP sales may violate the arm's-length assumption of regular transactions and consequently impair the representational faithfulness and verifiability of accounting data, we find that earnings of firms engaged in RP sales are at least 33% less informative after controlling for factors known to affect earnings informativeness. We also find that financial analysts are …

“Savages” In The Service Of Empire: Native American Soldiers In Gorham's Rangers, 1744–1762, Brian D. Carroll
History Faculty Scholarship
Gorham's Rangers, initially an all-Indian ranger company, was instrumental in Britain's conquest of Nova Scotia (Acadia) during the eighteenth century. In the process of uncovering that story, the essay assesses New England Indians’ role in shaping colonial frontier warfare as well as the impact of military service on Native American communities.

The Crisis In Legal Education: Dabbling In Disaster Planning, Kyle P. Mcentee, Patrick J. Lynch, Derek M. Tokaz
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The legal education crisis has already struck for many recent law school graduates, signaling potential disaster for law schools already struggling with their own economic challenges. Law schools have high fixed costs caused by competition between schools, the unchecked expansion of federal loan programs, a widely exploited information asymmetry about graduate employment outcomes, and a lack of financial discipline masquerading as innovation. As a result, tuition is up, jobs are down, and skepticism of the value of a J.D. has never been higher. If these trends do not reverse course, droves of students will continue to graduate with debt that …

Going Nowhere Fast (Or Furious): The Nonexistent U.S. Firearms Trafficking Statute And The Rise Of Mexican Drug Cartel Violence, Stewart M. Young
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Drug trafficking violence in Mexico, now reaching epidemic proportions, greatly impacts both the Mexican and United States governments. Despite the escalation of the "War on Drugs, " drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States continues largely unabated, stifling tourism revenue and lawful economic opportunities, and causing violence previously unknown in Mexico. Thus far, the United States' efforts to deal with this drug trafficking and violence include the recent debacle of Operation Fast and Furious. News regarding this Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives'(ATF) operation shocked citizens and lawmakers alike, as Fast and Furious allowed firearms to "walk" down …
A New Prescription To Balance Secrecy And Disclosure In Drug-Approval Processes, Gerrit M. Beckhaus
A New Prescription To Balance Secrecy And Disclosure In Drug-Approval Processes, Gerrit M. Beckhaus
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
To obtain approval to market a drug, a manufacturer must disclose significant amounts of research data to the government agency that oversees the approval process. The data often include information that could help advance scientific progress, and are therefore of great value. But current laws in both the United States and Europe give secrecy great weight. This Article proposes an obligatory sealed-bid auction of the sensitive information based on the experience with similar auctions in mergers and acquisitions, to balance manufacturers' interest in secrecy and the public interest in disclosure.
The Federal Reserve As Last Resort, Colleen Baker
The Federal Reserve As Last Resort, Colleen Baker
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, is one of the most important and powerful institutions in the world. Surprisingly, legal scholarship hardly pays any attention to the Federal Reserve or to the law structuring and governing its legal authority. This is especially curious given the amount of legal scholarship focused on administrative agencies that do not have anywhere near as critical a domestic and international role as that of the Federal Reserve. At the core of what the Federal Reserve does and should do is to conduct monetary policy so as to safeguard pricing, including that …
