Weaning Onto Solid Foods: Some Of The Challenges, Annemarie E. Bennett, Annalouise O'Connor, Nicola Canning, Alice Kenny, Edel Keaveney, Katherine Younger, Mary Flynn

Articles

Weaning - the transition from milk to solid food - influences life-long health. Dietary challenges during weaning include providing sufficient critical nutrients such as iron with minimal added sugar and fat and no added salt. This study assessed the inclusion of iron-containing red meat in infant diets before age one year, and the Irish commercial baby food environment. Of mothers with an infant under 30 months of age who were surveyed in shopping centres in Ireland (n195), 82% (n159) reported wanting more weaning information. A quarter (n24) of infants over age 12 months ( …

Scientific and political interests at the poles are significant and rapidly increasing, driven in part by the effects of climate change and emerging geopolitical realities. The polar regions provide important services to global ecosystems and humankind, ranging from food and energy to freshwater and biodiversity. Yet the poles are experiencing changes at rates that far outpace the rest of the planet. Coastal Arctic communities are impacted by climate change through coastal erosion, sea level rise, ice loss, and altered marine food webs, threatening the future of their subsistence lifestyle. Climate change has dramatically increased the melt rate of ice sheets …

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Teaching concepts in direct marketing and distribution can be interesting and rewarding. Using a case that highlights advances in direct marketing technology and offers significant customer value can help overcome lack of currency and integration of direct marketing and distribution strategies in the introductory marketing curriculum. The Redbox case provides a contextual background for using direct marketing via kiosks, re-engineering of their functionality and advances in distribution to make the product offer attractive and profitable. Follow up class discussion questions (Teaching Note available from the authors) focus on analyzing growth and efficiency opportunities as well as competitive challenges possible in …

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

We present a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in 9.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. Selected events contain one reconstructed Z -> e(+) e(-) or Z -> mu(+) mu(-)candidate and at least two jets, including at least one jet identified as likely to contain a b quark. To validate the search procedure, we also measure the cross section for ZZ production in the same final state. It is found to be consistent …

The Presidential Nuclear Initiatives Of 1991-1992, Susan J. Coch Sep 2012

The Presidential Nuclear Initiatives Of 1991-1992, Susan J. Coch

WMD Case Studies

On the morning of September 28, 1991, then-Colonel Frank Klotz witnessed an historic moment at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. As he and other senior officers from the base bomber and missile units watched, the crews for the B-1 strategic bombers that had been on alert that day climbed into their cockpits, started the planes, and taxied one after another away from the alert aircraft parking area. That scene was repeated at all 11 Strategic Air Command (SAC) bases in the United States. By the end of the day, there were no U.S. bombers on alert for the …

The Southern Ocean supports diverse and unique ecosystems that have been impacted by more than two centuries of exploitation and are now experiencing rapid changes in ocean temperature and seasonal ice cover due to climate warming. Understanding and projecting responses of Southern Ocean marine ecosystems to changing climate conditions and direct human impacts, such as fisheries, requires integrated ecosystem analyses at scales previously unexplored. Here we consider the main ecological and modelling challenges in predicting the responses of Southern Ocean ecosystems to change, and propose three inter-linked focus areas that will advance the development of integrated models for Southern Ocean …

Elaine Hightower Gagliardi On Treasury Transforms The Portability Election: Making The Dsue Amount A Reliable Planning Tool, Elaine H. Gagliardi Sep 2012

Elaine Hightower Gagliardi On Treasury Transforms The Portability Election: Making The Dsue Amount A Reliable Planning Tool, Elaine H. Gagliardi

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

With the issuance of temporary regulations, Treasury pulls back the cloak of uncertainty and reveals a portability election that proves to be relatively dependable and a useful planning tool. The temporary portability regulations,1 issued June 15, 2012, remove the “now you see it, now you don’t”2 quality of the deceased spousal unused exclusion (“DSUE”) amount as enacted by Congress. With a sleight of hand, Treasury rewrites the plain wording of the statute to eliminate uncertainty. The temporary regulations provide a clear path for avoiding loss of the DSUE amount on remarriage. The regulations allow donors to make gifts without fear …

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo: The Cost Of Not Including Domestic Violence Shelters Within The Definition Of Dwelling, Arielle Denis Sep 2012

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo: The Cost Of Not Including Domestic Violence Shelters Within The Definition Of Dwelling, Arielle Denis

Northern Illinois University Law Review

As the law currently stands, domestic violence shelters are not included in the definition of a “dwelling” in Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and, therefore, these shelters can turn away any protected class. This Comment argues domestic violence shelters must be considered a “dwelling” within Title VIII before a 2010 amendment to the Illinois Human Rights Act, adding “order of protection status” as a protected class, can be effective.

Pa-'Trolling' The False Marking Frontier: Giving Section 292 The Proper Makeover In Wake Of The America Invents Act, Kevin Zickterman

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Prohibiting false patent marking on various products and goods is not a new concept in intellectual property law. For the last 170 years, laws have been on the books to prevent individuals and manufacturers from deceiving the public, inventors, and other manufacturers into believing that an item or its design retains certain patent rights by law. But in passing the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act, a monumental piece of patent legislation on numerous levels, sweeping changes were made to long-standing false marking law and its concepts. This Comment takes a step back to explore the recent explosion of false marking litigation …

Substantive Reasonableness Review Of Federal Criminal Sentences: A Proposed Standard, Tim Cone Sep 2012

Substantive Reasonableness Review Of Federal Criminal Sentences: A Proposed Standard, Tim Cone

Northern Illinois University Law Review

After the United States Supreme Court announced in United States v. Booker that, henceforth, federal criminal sentences would be re-viewed for “reasonableness,” it instructed that appellate courts could review sentences for “substantive reasonableness.” However, its observations about “substantive reasonableness” review have not congealed into concrete parameters. As a result, a circuit conflict exists regarding “substantive reasonableness” review, some circuits holding that the re-weighing of sentencing factors is a legitimate part of substantive reasonableness review, while others holding it is not. This Article argues the re-weighing of sentencing factors should not be a part of substantive reasonableness review. It proposes that …

Cystatin C Identifies Patients With Stable Chronic Heart Failure At Increased Risk For Adverse Cardiovascular Events, Matthias Dupont, Yuping Wu, Stanley L. Hazen, W.H. Wilson Tang Sep 2012

Cystatin C Identifies Patients With Stable Chronic Heart Failure At Increased Risk For Adverse Cardiovascular Events, Matthias Dupont, Yuping Wu, Stanley L. Hazen, W.H. Wilson Tang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background—Renal function is a strong predictor of adverse events in heart failure. Current renal function measures are imperfect, and cystatin C (CysC) is promoted as a better marker of glomerular filtration rate. This study compares the prognostic use of CysC and derived glomerular filtration rate estimates with other measures of renal function in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods and Results—We measured serum CysC levels in 823 patients with heart failure undergoing coronary angiography with follow-up of major adverse cardiovascular events (death, myocardial infarction, stroke). CysC levels strongly correlated with creatinine (r=0.73), blood urea nitrogen (r=0.70), and estimated glomerular filtration …

Dynamics Of A Three Species Competition Model, Yuan Lou, Daniel Munther Sep 2012

Dynamics Of A Three Species Competition Model, Yuan Lou, Daniel Munther

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We investigate the dynamics of a three species competition model, in which all species have the same population dynamics but distinct dispersal strategies. Gejji et al. [15] introduced a general dispersal strategy for two species, termed as an ideal free pair in this paper, which can result in the ideal free distributions of two competing species at equilibrium. We show that if one of the three species adopts a dispersal strategy which produces the ideal free distribution, then none of the other two species can persist if they do not form an ideal free pair. We also show that if …

The Law School Critique In Historical Perspective, A. Benjamin Spencer Sep 2012

The Law School Critique In Historical Perspective, A. Benjamin Spencer

Washington and Lee Law Review

Contemporary critiques of legal education abound. This arises from what can be described as a perfect storm: the confluence of softness in the legal employment market, the skyrocketing costs of law school, and the unwillingness of clients and law firms to continue subsidizing the further training of lawyers who failed to learn how to practice in law school. As legal jobs become increasingly scarce and salaries stagnate, the value proposition of law school is rightly being questioned from all directions. Although numerous valid criticisms have been put forth, some seem to be untethered from a full appreciation for how the …

Roles For State Energy Regulators In Climate Change Mitigation , Brandon Hofmeister Sep 2012

Roles For State Energy Regulators In Climate Change Mitigation , Brandon Hofmeister

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

The construction of new power plants in the United States carries the risk of significantly contributing to global climate change. After concluding that the current federal regulatory response to climate change risks from power plants is inadequate, this Article examines three potential roles for state energy regulators to play as a bridge climate mitigation strategy until a cohesive federal policy is enacted. State energy regulators have received relatively little attention as potential climate change regulators, but they are well positioned to analyze and mitigate climate change risks from new power plants. The Article considers the advantages and drawbacks of state …

Rulemaking Vs. Democracy: Judging And Nudging Public Participation That Counts , Cynthia R. Farina, Mary Newhart, Josiah Heidt, Cornell Erulemaking Initiative

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

This Article considers how open government “magical thinking” around technology has infused efforts to increase public participation in rulemaking. We propose a framework for assessing the value of technology-enabled rulemaking participation and offer specific principles of participation-system design, which are based on conceptual work and practical experience in the Regulation Room project at Cornell University. An underlying assumption of open government enthusiasts is that more public participation will lead to better government policymaking: If we use technology to give people easier opportunities to participate in public policymaking, they will use these opportunities to participate effectively. However, experience thus far with …
