Optimal Slewing Of A Constrained Telescope Using Seventh Order Polynomial Input Torques, Julia K. Bush Sep 2012

Optimal Slewing Of A Constrained Telescope Using Seventh Order Polynomial Input Torques, Julia K. Bush

Master's Theses

Two-axis gimbals are frequently used to point cameras and telescopes at various points of interest for surveillance, science, and art. The rotation of a two-axis gimbal system is governed by nonlinear angular momentum equations of motion. This paper presents a method for slewing a telescope in space with a gimbaled sensor attached to a nominally non-rotating spacecraft using two seventh order polynomial input functions to characterize torques. To accomplish this task, picking the optimal coefficients of the seventh order polynomial was necessary. It was also desired to use constraint equations to limit the excursion, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and jerk …

Identification Of Orbital Objects By Spectral Analysis And Observation Of Space Environment Effects, Jason B. Rapp

Master's Theses

This report presents an investigation and development of the methods for orbital object identification. Two goals were accomplished in this master’s thesis; the development of a method of inverting material proportions from an object’s combined spectrum, and the investigation of methods and initialization of measurement of space environment effects on spectral features of common spacecraft materials. A constrained least squares approach was chosen for inverting spectral proportions from the combined spectra. The final results fall within 1 - 15% of the original spectrum, depending on the quality and noise levels of the original spectrum. Additionally, the effects of outgassing and …

Does Government Spending Undermine Monetary Policy In Nigeria?, Emmanuel T. Adamgbe, Peter D. Golit, Izuchukwu I. Okafor Sep 2012

Does Government Spending Undermine Monetary Policy In Nigeria?, Emmanuel T. Adamgbe, Peter D. Golit, Izuchukwu I. Okafor

Economic and Financial Review

In Nigeria, anecdotal evidence suggest that the fiscal/operations of government, especially disbursements from the Federation Account to the three-tiers of government, had over the years created liquidity challenges requiring aggressive monetary management. Against the background, this paper addresses two questions: (i) Does government spending have significant spill-over effects on inflation in Nigeria? (ii) Does government, spending induce a concomitant response by the CBN? ln addition, unlike the sparse literature in Nigeria on these two issues, which essentially relies on constant parameter model we use of time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) model with stochastic volatility. Applying this framework allows us not …

How Far Has Banks' Efficiency Changed Overtime In Nigeria? : An Empirical Investigation, A. I. Fagge, E. B. Hogan

Economic and Financial Review

This study investigates how banks' efficiency has changed overtime in Nigeria. The study applied Data Envelopment Analysis technique to obtain efficiency estimates such as technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency for the period 2007-2012. The Malmquist Productivity index, which measures technical change and efficiency change, was also obtained. The result suggests mixed developments in terms of technical, pure technical and scale efficiencies of banks during the assessment period. Average pure technical efficiency at 39.8 per cent is higher than the scale and technical efficiencies at 30.0 and 24.5 per cent, respectively, while average technical change and efficiency change …

Monetary Policy And Bank Behaviour In Nigeria, Muhammad A. Abba, Abdulahi U. Musa Sep 2012

Monetary Policy And Bank Behaviour In Nigeria, Muhammad A. Abba, Abdulahi U. Musa

Economic and Financial Review

This paper analyses monetary policy and bank behaviour in Nigeria. Existing evidence shows that banks alter their lending behaviour in a specific way following a change in monetary policy. This study investigates the dynamic relationship between the actions of the monetary authorities through changes in the monetary policy rate (MPR), and the behaviour of deposit money banks in Nigeria through their allocation and pricing of credit. We employed aggregates time-series data as in several studies on bank lending. Two variables, credit to the core private sector and lending rate, which measure whether banks change their behavior when CBN changes the …

Still On The Equilibrium Real Exchange Rate Of The Naira: A Re-Examination, Omolara O. Duke, Oladunni Adesanya Sep 2012

Still On The Equilibrium Real Exchange Rate Of The Naira: A Re-Examination, Omolara O. Duke, Oladunni Adesanya

Economic and Financial Review

This study estimates the equilibrium real exchange rate for Nigeria using the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) approach and the Behavioural Equilibrium Exchange Role (BEER) model as well as, determined the extent, of Naira exchange rate misalignment over the period l970 q1 to 2013 q4. Evidence of three major episodes of over/undervaluation of the nominal exchange rate using the PPP were provided. The WER model results established the existence of a long-run interaction between the real exchange rate (RER) and the fundamental variables. ln particular, the behaviour of the RER is determined by the degree of openness, net foreign asset, real …

The Effectiveness Of Monetary Policy Ln Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Ezra U. Kure, Phebian N. Bewaji Sep 2012

The Effectiveness Of Monetary Policy Ln Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Ezra U. Kure, Phebian N. Bewaji

Economic and Financial Review

The paper has attempted to assess the effectiveness of monetary policy in Nigeria between 1986 and 2012, against concerns over the inelasticity of real sector variables to monetary policy shocks. It applied a vector autoregressive (VAR) methodology to answer two questions: what is the role of monetary policy on the growth of output, inflation and the nominal exchange rate in Nigeria and is there a price puzzle attributable to monetary policy in Nigeria? Subject to the restrictions imposed by the data sample and the six variables specified, the study found that monetary policy was effective in the period of study; …

The Monetary Model Of Exchange Rate Determination: The Case Of Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba, Sani Bawa Sep 2012

The Monetary Model Of Exchange Rate Determination: The Case Of Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba, Sani Bawa

Economic and Financial Review

The monetary model of exchange role proposes a strong relationship between exchange rate and monetary fundamentals. The model infers that the price of a country’s currency is determined by the interaction of demand and supply of money, hence the price level of two partner countries should not differ if expressed in the same currency. This study attempted to confirm this relationship for Nigeria using a bounds testing approach to cointegration. The result reveals that money supply differential is the most influential, followed by relative income and inflation variance. This lends support to the monetary model of exchange rate determination in …

The Changing Face Of Scholarly Communication: University Libraries And Presses Transform The Book, Richard W. Clement, Cheryl D. Walters, Andrew Wesolek, Michael Spooner

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

The rise of electronic publication is irrevocably altering the landscape of scholarly communication. Discussions of electronic modes of publication typically focus on new business models, open access, OAI protocols, and retaining the authority of the peer review process in a world increasingly relying on crowdsourcing. This presentation focuses on a less-discussed but very fundamental aspect of the epub revolution in scholarly communication: the evolution of codex-based monographs, and articles to the next form. We survey how university libraries and presses are pushing the boundaries of traditional scholarly monographs and articles, giving us a sneak preview, perhaps, of what scholarly communication …

Probabilistic Analysis Of Indeterminate Highway Bridges Considering Material Nonlinearity, Liam Mccarthy Sep 2012

Probabilistic Analysis Of Indeterminate Highway Bridges Considering Material Nonlinearity, Liam Mccarthy

Masters

With ever-reducing maintenance budgets and ever-deteriorating bridge infrastructure, th assessment of existing bridges is vital. Reliability analysis techniques are becomin increasingly popular in the structural safety assessment of existing bridge structures Commonly, a component based approach is used in reliability analysis techniques Traditional reliability procedures often employ a conservative definition of failure, in that th component is deemed to have failed when the strength capacity has been exceeded at a singl cross section. As a result, the component's degree of redundancy and ductility is ignored giving an often conservative estimate of the load carrying capacity of the bridge component Therefore, …

Migration Of Health Workers: A Challenge For Health Care System, Shaista Afzal, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat

Department of Radiology

The migration of health workers has resulted in a growing apprehension universally because of its impact on health system of the developing countries. Although the choice to migrate is basically a personal one, however, the overall social and economic circumstances have important impact on the decision to migrate. The "push and pull" factors for migration are disparity in working conditions, pay, lack of promotion opportunities, poor living conditions, desire to gain experience, professional development, family background and family wealth. A strategic approach by the government and other agencies is mandatory for regulating the flow of health workers between countries. A …

On The Estimation And Testing Of Fixed Effects Panel Data Models With Weak Instruments, Badi Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of within groups k-class estimators in a panel data model with weak instruments. Weak instruments are characterized by the coefficients of the instruments in the reduced form equation shrinking to zero at a rate proportional to nTδ ; where n is the dimension of the cross-section and T is the dimension of the time series. Joint limits as (n,T )→∞show that this within group k-class estimator is consistent if 0 ≤δ ≤ ½ and inconsistent if ½ ≤δ ≤ ∞.

Chronically Inadequate Sleep Results In Abnormal Bone Formation And Abnormal Bone Marrow In Rats, Carol A. Everson, Anne E. Folley, Jeffrey M. Toth Sep 2012

Chronically Inadequate Sleep Results In Abnormal Bone Formation And Abnormal Bone Marrow In Rats, Carol A. Everson, Anne E. Folley, Jeffrey M. Toth

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Insufficient sleep over long durations of the lifespan is believed to adversely affect proper development and healthful aging, although how this might become manifested is unknown. In the present study, rats were repeatedly sleep-restricted during 72 days to permit maladaptations to evolve, thereby permitting study. Densitometric and histomorphometric analyses were performed on harvested bone. In sleep-restricted rats, bone lined by osteoid was reduced 45-fold and osteoid thickness was decreased, compared with controls. This corresponded to a decrease in osteoblast number and activity. The percentage of bone lined by osteoclasts did not differ from that of controls. Plasma concentrations of an …

Systems Engineering Applications For Small Business Innovative Research (Sbir) Projects, Phillip J. O'Connell

Theses and Dissertations

This research defined Systems Engineering applications for Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) projects and answered five research questions addressing the essential elements and application of SE processes within the SBIR community. The research identified that current DoD and Air Force SE Policy do not specifically address SBIR projects. This research identified the need to tailor a SE approach for SBIR projects as overarching policy is not applicable in all cases. The culmination of this effort defined the current SE tasks applicable for the SBIR community.

Freedrop Testing And Cfd Simulation Of Ice Models From A Cavity Into Supersonic Flow, Thomas J. Flora

Theses and Dissertations

Weapon release at supersonic speeds from an internal bay is highly advantageous. For this reason, both experimental and numerical methods were used to investigate store separation from a cavity (L=D=4.5) into Mach 2.94 flow. The experiment used a piezoresistive pressure transducer, Schlieren and high-speed photography for data acquisition. The computational solution used the OVERFLOW solver. A sphere and a Mk-82, scaled to 1:20, were formed using frozen tap water. The sphere model was freedrop tested experimentally and computationally, while the sub-scale store shaped model was freedrop tested experimentally. The total pressure was varied to alter the dynamic response of the …

The Impact Of Certification On Certified Perioperative Nurses: A Qualitative Descriptive Survey, Kathryn Schroeter, Michelle Byrne, Katharine Klink, Matthew Beier, Natalie S. Mcandrew

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

As the practice of healthcare becomes more technologically advanced, specialized and complex, there is an increasing demand for accountability. Certification demonstrates that an individual practitioner has maintained an acceptable, or perhaps more advanced level of qualifications, knowledge, and skills in a specialty practice area. The nurses' perceptions, as shared in this study, revealed positive aspects related to their achievement of certification in perioperative practice. Although certification for nurses has been available for decades a detailed evaluation of its meaning and implications for practice seems to be unavailable. The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted in Chicago, Illinois and also online, …
