Testing News Trustworthiness In An Online Public Sphere: A Case Study Of The Economist's News Report Covering The Riots In Xinjiang, China, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Sep 2012

Testing News Trustworthiness In An Online Public Sphere: A Case Study Of The Economist's News Report Covering The Riots In Xinjiang, China, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This paper explores the news trustworthiness and media credibility of The Economist’s news report on 9 July 2009, and the communicative roles of 846 readers’ responses. Theoretically guided by news translation and cultural resistance and the online public sphere, we applied online field observation and discourse analysis and achieved two main findings: First, although the news report covered the Xinjiang riots with comprehensive and attractive details, it violated the core journalism value of media credibility and journalistic objectivity by providing misleading pictures and significant unreliable and biased coverage. Second, the major communicative roles of the online readers’ responses generally match …

Georgoulis

Journal Articles

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction on the quadriceps-dominant strategy as a parameter associated with the neuromuscular control of the knee joint.

Methods

In this study 14 competitive soccer players who had undergone ACL reconstruction with bone–patellar tendon–bone autograft and 14 healthy competitive soccer players performed two 10-minute treadmill runs, 1 at moderate intensity and 1 at high intensity. Electromyographic recordings were acquired by use of a telemetric system at the third, fifth, seventh, and tenth minute of the runs from the vastus lateralis and the biceps femoris bilaterally. …

Tpack Development In Teacher Education: A Longitudinal Study Of Preservice Teachers In A Secondary M.A.Ed. Program, Mark Hoffer, Neal Grandgenett Sep 2012

Tpack Development In Teacher Education: A Longitudinal Study Of Preservice Teachers In A Secondary M.A.Ed. Program, Mark Hoffer, Neal Grandgenett

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

How does preservice teachers’ knowledge for technology integration develop during their teacher preparation program? Which areas of their knowledge develop most naturally, and which areas require more scaffolding? In this mixed-methods, descriptive study of preservice teachers enrolled in an 11-month M.A.Ed. program, we sought to trace the development of participants’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) over time. Comparisons of self-report surveys, structured reflections, and instructional plans at multiple data points spanning the three-semester program revealed significant development of the participants’ technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), but only limited growth in technological content knowledge (TCK).

Glover, Dominique Rissolo, Jennifer P. Mathews, C. A. Furman

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

Seeing The Seafloor Discoveries Of The Rvib Nathaniel B. Palmer Multibeam Systems, Frank O. Nitsche, Julia S. Wellner, Philip Bart, Suzanne O'Hara, Kathleen Gavahan Sep 2012

Seeing The Seafloor Discoveries Of The Rvib Nathaniel B. Palmer Multibeam Systems, Frank O. Nitsche, Julia S. Wellner, Philip Bart, Suzanne O'Hara, Kathleen Gavahan

Faculty Publications

The detailed seafloor topography around Antarctica was virtually unknown until RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer and other ships started to collect multibeam swath measurements in the 1990s. These new, high-resolution bathymetric data allowed the creation of topographic maps of the Antarctic continental shelf and rise with unprecedented detail. The multibeam data revealed glacial morphological features that allowed reconstruction of paleo-ice flow and maximum ice extent of the formerly glaciated continental margin. Furthermore, these data provided the basis for new insights into the continent's tectonic evolution and defined the nature of marine biological habitats in polar regions. © 2012 by The Oceanography …

Glacial Intensification During The Neogene A Review Of Seismic Stratigraphic Evidence From The Ross Sea, Antarctica, Continental Shelf, Philip J. Bart, Laura De Santis

Faculty Publications

Seismic stratigraphic and drill data from Antarctic continental margins have provided much direct evidence concerning ice sheet evolution as Earth's climate cooled from the warmth of the Eocene. Seismic facies analyses and correlations to sediment cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 28 drill sites show that the Ross Sea, the southwestern Pacific gateway of West Antarctica, was still mostly free of grounded ice for ~ 6 million years after Oi-1, the large-amplitude oxygen-isotope shift that signaled the abrupt onset of the current Antarctic glaciation. In the Ross Sea, our analysis shows that West Antarctic glaciation had begun by the …

From Plyler V. Doe To Trayvon Martin: Toward Closing The Open Society, Lyle Dennison Sep 2012

From Plyler V. Doe To Trayvon Martin: Toward Closing The Open Society, Lyle Dennison

Washington and Lee Law Review

Lyle Denniston, the longest serving and most experienced journalist covering the United States Supreme Court, takes his theme of an inclusive and open society from the constitutional and cultural vision of the late Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. and then offers a detailed argument that America is forfeiting—or at least compromising—that vision in favor of a safer, more secure and more cramped society, at home and abroad. The Article, taken from a memorial lecture in Justice Powell’s honor at Washington and Lee University in April 2012, draws upon a variety of very different societal and legal developments that are found …

Contingent Capital In Executive Compensation, Wulf A. Kaal Sep 2012

Contingent Capital In Executive Compensation, Wulf A. Kaal

Washington and Lee Law Review

Contingent capital has great potential to improve corporate governance in Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFIs). Early initiatives by European SIFIs to include contingent convertible bonds in executive compensation packages lack governance-improving designs. This Article suggests the use of contingent convertible bonds with an early conversion trigger in executive compensation. The proposal adds an important element to the literature on inside debt and the creditor-centered approach to executive compensation. Contingent convertible bonds with early triggers could be preferable to other debt instruments because, in addition to lowering income inequality and increasing sustainability, the early trigger design can improve incentives for executives …

Illuminating Innovation: From Patent Racing To Patent War, Lea Shaver Sep 2012

Illuminating Innovation: From Patent Racing To Patent War, Lea Shaver

Washington and Lee Law Review

Patent law assumes that stronger protection promotes innovation, yet empirical evidence to test this “innovation hypothesis” is lacking. This Article argues that historical case studies hold unique promise to provide an empirical foundation for modern patent policy. Specifically, this Article uses the history of patents surrounding the light bulb to examine a recently articulated theory of “patent racing” as a justification for patent protection. Thomas Edison’s experience confirms that Mark Lemley’s racing model has substantial descriptive merit. Yet this case study also reveals the limits of the patent racing model. Looking past the initial finish line of patent filings to …
