A Pilot Trial Of Pioglitazone Hcl And Tretinoin In Als: Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers To Monitor Drug Efficacy And Predict Rate Of Disease Progression, Todd D. Levine, Robert Bowser, Nicole C. Hank, Stephen Gately, Dietrich Stephan, David S. Saperstein, Kendall Van Keuren-Jensen

Translational Neuroscience

Objectives. To determine if therapy with pioglitazone HCl and tretinoin could slow disease progression in patients with ALS. Levels of tau and pNFH in the cerebrospinal fluid were measured to see if they could serve as prognostic indicators. Methods. 27 subjects on stable doses of riluzole were enrolled. Subjects were randomized to receive pioglitazone 30 mg/d and tretinoin 10 mg/BID for six months or two matching placebos. ALSFRS-R scores were followed monthly. At baseline and at the final visit, lumbar punctures (LPs) were performed to measure cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker levels. Results. Subjects treated with tretinoin, pioglitazone, and riluzole had …

Influence Of Microsite Disturbance On The Establishment Of Two Congeneric Invasive Thistles, Emily S.J. Rauschert, Katriona Shea

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

The successful establishment of invasive species has been shown to depend on aspects of the invaded community, such as gap characteristics. Biotic resistance may be particularly critical for stopping invaders at early life history stages, but new species can often invade following disturbances, which may create microsites with very different characteristics than are usually present. We examine the response of two invasive thistle species, Carduus nutans L. and C. acanthoides L., to three different microsite characteristics: disturbance type, size, and water availability. The two species initially responded differently to the type of disturbance: C. acanthoides had higher emergence and survival …

Counting Electric Sheep: Understanding Information In The Context Of Media Ecology, Lance Strate

CMS Faculty Publications

In the field of media ecology, defined as the study of media as environments, media and medium, and ecology and environment are key terms, while information, although commonly employed, is generally used without reference to a specific definition. This article examines the mostly implicit assumptions about and understandings of the term information in the context of the field of media ecology. Information can be seen as a synonym or subset of content or message, can be divided into different orders or levels of content/communication and relationship/medium, and on both levels is dependent on and altered by changes in technology, code, …

The Transfer Veteran Student Experience: Exploring College Choice, Transition, And Collegiate Experiences Of Veterans, Shaftone Bryne Dunklin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The tragic series of events that took place on September 11, 2001, changed the course of this nation and became the catalyst for wars that have spanned for more than a decade. Bush signed into law provisions for what has been commonly referred to as the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This legislation substantially increased educational benefits for veterans and has led to an increase of veterans enrolling in institutions of …
