The Effects Of Pre-Operative Orientation On Outcomes For Joint Replacement Surgery Patients, Meghan Kelly, Lourdes Mesina Escolta
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The Pre-operative Joint Replacement Orientation class is designed to prepare patients for the complete experience of hip and knee replacement surgery. A collaborative PowerPoint presentation along with hands-on training provides patients the information necessary to transition smoothly through the joint replacement process from the pre-operative visit to discharge disposition. Although all patients are encouraged to attend the class prior to surgery, some choose not to attend. Through a retrospective data collection process, these authors assessed the effect of attending pre-operative orientation on patient outcomes related to length of stay, rehabilitation progress, and discharge disposition, as compared to those who did …

Good Work In Nursing And Relationship To Professional Socialization: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Research Studies And Implications For Nursing Education, M. Christine Alichnie, Joan F. Miller
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Nursing practice adheres to high standards regardless of the multi-contextual work environment or the paradigm shift in modern health care. This concept of Good Work in Nursing has three major characteristics; excellence, ethics, and engagement (Miller, 2006 & Gardner, 2008). Likewise, professional education results when a professional discipline has devised a system of preparing future practitioners to meet their commitments and fundamental responsibilities to society. A major aim of professional education is to develop a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs to support the professional roles of independent practitioners in conjunction with the acquisition of cognitive and psychomotor skills …

Exploring The E-Patient Phenomenon In Nursing, Holli A. Devon, Perry M. Gee, Deborah A. Greenwood, Katherine K. Kim, Susan L. Perez, Nancy Staggers
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The availability of health information on the Internet has changed the knowledge power structure between patients and their health care providers. This new phenomenon of patients well informed by electronic information is known as the e-Patient. e-Patients use information technology to actively participate in their health care rather than passively receive health care, thus assuming higher levels of responsibility for their own health and wellness. Nursing can utilize the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom (DIKW) framework to understand how e-Patients and clinicians may achieve this collective wisdom. The purpose of this review is to examine the e-Patient phenomenon through the …

Supporting Excellence In Long-Term Care With Student Ebp Projects, Suzanne Beltz, Loree Dubose
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
With any clinical experience, nursing students learning in the long-term care setting pose questions regarding specific practices by the health care provider(s). This curiosity of comparing what they are learning in the classroom with what they see in the clinical setting can provide learning opportunities and opportunities for best-practice dissemination to care givers in long-term care. The Institute of Medicine identified employing evidence-based practice as a core competency for providing quality and safe patient care (Finkleman & Kenner, 2009). This practice has more prongs than research alone; it includes client values and preferences; client history and assessment data; clinical expertise; …

The Lived Experience Of Compensated Kidney Donors In The Philippines: A Phenomenological Study, Medel Paguirigan
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Despite several advances in HD and PD, an uncomplicated kidney transplant still provides the highest level of quality of life for patients diagnosed with ESRD. The shortage of available kidneys has driven potential recipients to resort to underground organ trade. There is a huge gap in literature about the meaning of sacrificing something important as the lived experience of compensated kidney donors in the Philippines. There are no studies encountered both quantitative and qualitative, using the nursing paradigm that focuses on the lived experiences of compensated especially in the Philippines, where there is a huge market for kidneys.
