The Road To Success: Integration Of Ebp Throughout A Bsn Nursing Curriculum, Barbara Ann Graves Sep 2012

The Road To Success: Integration Of Ebp Throughout A Bsn Nursing Curriculum, Barbara Ann Graves

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Professional nurses across the world are called to provide nursing care from an evidence-based practice (EBP) approach. The current health care environment continues to be driven by rising healthcare costs coupled with the need to improve practice and health outcomes. Using EBP, or the "best evidence available" with "nursing expertise" and "patient values and preferences", can improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare spending. Furthermore, Sigma Theta Tau International has strongly advocated for the use of evidence-based nursing (EBN). Therefore, evidence-based nursing (EBN) must be foundational for the professional practice of nursing. It is imperative for nursing education to be grounded …

Best Practices In Authentication And Verification Of Students In Online Education, Cheryl Mixon Smith, Sheri R. Noviello

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Educators around the world are faced with increased cheating and plagiarism in college courses. Cheating has been considered a serious problem on college campuses for many years (Watson & Sottile, 2010). Universities with online programs are challenged to provide positive identification of students enrolled in online courses in response to the U.S. Higher Education Act. This act requires accrediting bodies to monitor the efforts of colleges and universities in this process. Although college students cheat in face-to-face classes, faculty and students feel the potential for online cheating is greater. However, the evidence shows that the mode of content delivery does …

Nursing Education And Redesigned Discharge Process: Effects On Congestive Heart Failure Patient Outcomes, Mary L. Gish, Mary F. Rodts, Judy Crouch

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

In a rural community hospital in northern California, greater than fifty percent of all patients are over the age of 64 years. The readmission rate for congestive heart failure (CHF) patients is greater than the rate for the state of California. A decrease in readmission rates has been selected as a three year strategic goal due to the proposed rule from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which will result in a financial discount if the rate of readmissions does not improve. The purpose of the Redesigned Discharge Process Project is to reduce the readmission rate of patients with …

Methods: Men receiving radiation treatment (n=83) completed the 39-item Functional Assessment of …

Nurses' Attitudes To Working With Older People In Acute Care, Anne-Marie Mahoney, David Beckett Sep 2012

Nurses' Attitudes To Working With Older People In Acute Care, Anne-Marie Mahoney, David Beckett

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: There is little evidence that factors influencing attitudes to older persons have been investigated (Moyle 2003). Changes to service delivery models within acute health have meant that there has been an increase in Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) and a decrease in length of stay. Many younger patients are cared for in the community supported with funded programs. Therefore, in-patient populations in acute care are generally older, with greater acuity and increasing co-morbidities. Australia expects an increase from 4.3 million older persons in 2021 to around 6.8million in 2051 (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, 2008). Aim: The aim of …

Debriefing Pediatric End-Of-Life Care Through Personal Reflection, Rebecca L. Meyer Sep 2012

Debriefing Pediatric End-Of-Life Care Through Personal Reflection, Rebecca L. Meyer

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Scope: Education for nursing professionals is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Institute of Medicine about caring for dying children. Improving education and support for nurses is important so they can then educate and support families and patients. Utilizing experiential learning about the types of patients experiencing palliative treatment/therapies and end of life care needs to start in nursing schools so that newly graduating nurses have an increased awareness of how to care for dying children. Didactic education should include ways to facilitate integration of spirituality, culture, communication, and how to establish caring relationships during a difficult …
