Trophic Transfer Of Fluorescent Polyethylene Microplastics In A Simplified Artemia–Oreochromis Aquatic Food Chain, Dativa J. Shilla
Tanzania Journal of Science
Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, yet experimental evidence of their trophic transfer within tropical African food webs remains scarce. This study provides experimental evidence of indirect trophic transfer of microplastics from Artemia salina to Oreochromis urolepis, a cichlid species of ecological and economic importance in African inland and coastal waters. A simplified two-level food chain was established by exposing A. salina nauplii to fluorescent polyethylene microplastics (10–20 µm; 1, 10, and 100 mg L⁻¹) and subsequently feeding them to juvenile O. urolepis under controlled laboratory conditions. These concentrations were selected to represent a range of exposure levels …

Tanzania Journal of Science
Root-rats (Tachyoryctes splendens) and emini silvery mole-rats (Heliophobius argenteocinereus emini) are common subterranean rodents that are essential component of the ecosystem. They serve as prey for small to medium-sized carnivores and birds of prey but their role as hosts to parasites is limited. The present study, explored the Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) contents of 40 rodents (20 T. splendens and 20 H. a. emini, respectively) to acquire information on parasites diversity of these mammals. The GIT contents from subterranean rodents in a sex ratio of 1:1 were examined under a compound microscope to isolate helminths. The isolated helminths belonged to the …

Experimental Study Of A Scaled Flexible Riser For Hydrogen Transport From A Floating Wind Turbine Platform To The Seabed, Jessica Guichard, Martyn Hann, Tom Tosdevin, Deborah Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Dolphyn Hydrogen aims to support the UK Government’s 2030 hydrogen targets by deploying a 10-15 MW Commercial Scale Demonstrator that produces hydrogen offshore using wind energy. To achieve this, hydrodynamic studies are required to optimise the flexible pipeline transporting hydrogen from a floating wind turbine to the seabed, as well as the buoyancy modules that create the riser’s lazy wave shape. A key parameter is ensuring the riser never bends below its minimum allowable radius. The hydrodynamic behaviour of a 6-inch NOV flexible pipe is tested at 1:62 scale in the University of Plymouth’s COAST Laboratory Ocean Basin. The riser …
Applying Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Adolescent Female Athletes’ Intentions Of Continued Sport Participation, Chris Hopkins, Casey S. Hopkins
Applying Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Adolescent Female Athletes’ Intentions Of Continued Sport Participation, Chris Hopkins, Casey S. Hopkins
Open Access Fund Publications
Introduction: Adolescent females discontinue sports at higher rates than males, which contributes to their lower overall physical activity during this important period of development. Potentially useful for understanding this disparity, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) provides a framework to study one's intentions through their attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. This study examined whether TPB constructs predict female adolescents’ intentions to continue participating in sports and remain physically active.
Methods: This cross-sectional study used an online questionnaire to collect data from 271 female adolescents who recently participated in organized sports. Structural equation modeling was used to test TPB's …
Engagement With Tailored Physical Activity Interventions Among Women In Midlife With Elevated Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Kiri Baga
Theses and Dissertations
Women in midlife (ages 40-65) with risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) need physical activity (PA) interventions that are informed by and address their daily challenges and life circumstances, to reduce their chances of premature mortality from CVD. Sustaining engagement with PA interventions remains a substantial challenge for women in midlife. The aims of the proposed study were to describe participants’ PA-relevant characteristics and intervention preferences and to identify their patterns of engagement with different PA support tools (tailored PA website, intervention involving pairing women as PA partners). With respect to engagement, there was limited between-person stability in engagement outcomes …

Filling The Knowledge Gap: The National Automobile Theft Bureau And The Rise Of Private Intelligence, 1912–1941, William Murray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the Automobile Protective and Information Bureau (APIB) and its successor, the National Automobile Theft Bureau (NATB), situating these institutions within the development of corporate intelligence in the United States. The rapid expansion of automobile ownership produced a form of crime defined by technological advancement and jurisdictional fragmentation that existing law enforcement could not effectively address. In response, automobile insurance companies created the APIB as a centralized clearinghouse for theft intelligence. By standardizing reporting, maintaining national records, and distributing investigative information, the Bureau developed an early private intelligence infrastructure that supported law enforcement. The limitations of local enforcement …

Michigan Tech Publications
Aims: Regional climate changes may lead to shifts in root traits, affecting forest productivity and carbon release. Fine roots, which can respire significant proportions of fixed carbon dioxide back to the atmosphere, may adjust through changes in their respiration rates, morphology, nitrogen content, or biomass. Across a species’ range, understanding how these characteristics vary in response to their current environments lays the groundwork for predicting their responses to novel environments. We investigated northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) fine root trait and biomass responses to growing season temperature and precipitation, and soil properties. Methods: We sampled soil and Q. rubra …

Cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) is a by–product from cashew processing industries containing four naturally occurring phenolic compounds. This study investigated an extraction approach using CO2–expanded hexane. The central composite design (CCD) was employed in experimental design to investigate the effects and interaction of CO 2 mole fractions and extraction temperature on the CNSL yield and quality (Colour) from Steamed CNSL. The dissolution power of the CO2–expanded hexane was assessed by determining the solubility of CNSL during the initial stages of extraction at different extraction conditions. Findings indicated that higher CO2 mole fractions reduced CNSL solubility, while higher temperatures enhanced it. …
Multi-Frequency Associative Memory For Continual Graph Learning Through Nested Optimization, Shuvam Kundu
Multi-Frequency Associative Memory For Continual Graph Learning Through Nested Optimization, Shuvam Kundu
Master’s Dissertations
Graph Neural Networks struggle to learn new tasks without forgetting old ones a problem known as catastrophic forgetting. In graph domains, this is compounded by structural shift, where newly added edges corrupt the learned representations of historical nodes even when model weights remain unchanged. We present CAM-Titans, a continual graph learning framework built around a two-buffer associative memory to address both parametric and structural forgetting. Our architecture operates across three timescales of adaptation: a slow base memory updated via ordinary gradient descent, an intermediate task buffer re-encoded after every task using the delta-rule, and a transient in-context state for rapid …

A Study Of Prompt Tuning On Small Language Models(Slms): A Controlled Benchmark And A Lightweight Instance-Aware Method, Narkadamilli Sahith
Master’s Dissertations
Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) adapts a frozen pre-trained language model by training only a small number of additional parameters. Among PEFT approaches, prompt tuning prepends trainable continuous vectors (soft prompts) to the input. A recurring finding in the literature is that prompt tuning is strongly scale dependent: it rivals full fine-tuning on very large models but lags on smaller ones. This dissertation studies prompt tuning specifically in the small-language-model (SLM) regime. We (i) re-implement a representative set of prompt-tuning methods—Prompt Tuning, P-Tuning v2, LoPT, DPT, DePT, ACCEPT, Residual Prompt Tuning, and PARA—within a single controlled harness, enabling a fair head-to-head comparison …
