Association Of Driving With Blood Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol: A Systematic Review, Danial Behzad, Sampson Zhao, Reena Besa, Bruna Brands, Christine M. Wickens, Marilyn A. Huestis, Bernard Le Foll, Patricia Di Ciano Apr 2025

Association Of Driving With Blood Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol: A Systematic Review, Danial Behzad, Sampson Zhao, Reena Besa, Bruna Brands, Christine M. Wickens, Marilyn A. Huestis, Bernard Le Foll, Patricia Di Ciano

Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers

IMPORTANCE: Driving under the influence of cannabis increases the risk of motor vehicle collisions. In some jurisdictions, deterrence rests on the ability to detect delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in blood. Recent evidence suggests that there may be a nuanced relationship of blood THC to driving.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize all published papers investigating the presence of a linear relationship between blood THC and driving, primarily measured by simulated driving in the lab.

OUTCOMES: The main outcomes assessed included "weaving"/lateral control (eg, standard deviation of lateral position), speed, car following (following distance; coherence), reaction time, and overall …

Practicing Community, Cultivating Democracy -- Lessons From Professional Power Shifters, Sylvia Gale

Other Publications

Below I describe five intentional practices people working in human-facing professions can employ in order to create the conditions for a healthy democracy.

These practices were originally distilled from my observations at the Deaconess Foundation’s Helsinki D-Stations and from my interactions and discussions with professionals across the Foundation’s Civic Action and Community Programs team from January-June 2023, when I was hosted by the Deaconess Foundation on a Mid-Career Professional Development Award from the Fulbright Finland Foundation. Since then, I have augmented and clarified these practices through observation and reflection with colleagues in my American context, where I am the executive …

Advocating For Pots; A Misdiagnosed And Underserved Population, Abbey E. Zimmers, Zeida Gutierrez

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia that primarily affects the autonomic nervous system, making daily activities such as standing or concentrating difficult due to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and brain fog. It is most common in young women, often triggered by autoimmune diseases, viral infections, or trauma. POTS is under-diagnosed, with healthcare providers often unaware of its full spectrum of symptoms and the role of occupational therapy in managing daily function. Occupational therapy (OT) can significantly improve quality of life by helping patients manage symptoms and regain independence. Raising awareness of POTS and the benefits of …

The Emotions Of Uncertainty: Science, Politics, And The Social Dynamics Of Decision Making, Alisa N. Rogers

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation examines how social and emotional factors influence attitudes toward science and decision making regarding science-based policy recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic. I examine boundary work practices among the public as they evaluate experts during the pandemic and the social sources of information people used to construct knowledge. Then I examine the social and emotional factors that participants indicated influenced their own attitude formation and decisions to act regarding public health recommendations during the pandemic. I find that emotions influence each element of the decision process: information gathering, information evaluation, attitude formation, and decisions to act. Affective commitment and …

Ahr Activation At The Air-Blood Barrier Alters Systemic Microrna Release After Inhalation Of Particulate Matter Containing Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals, Ankit Aryal, Ashlyn C. Harmon, Alexandra Noël, Qingzhao Yu, Kurt J. Varner, Tammy R. Dugas Apr 2025

Ahr Activation At The Air-Blood Barrier Alters Systemic Microrna Release After Inhalation Of Particulate Matter Containing Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals, Ankit Aryal, Ashlyn C. Harmon, Alexandra Noël, Qingzhao Yu, Kurt J. Varner, Tammy R. Dugas

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Particulate matter containing environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) is formed when organic pollutants are incompletely burned and adsorb to the surface of particles containing redox-active metals. Our prior studies showed that in mice, EPFR inhalation impaired vascular relaxation in a dose- and endothelium-dependent manner. We also observed that activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in the alveolar type-II (AT-II) cells that form the air-blood interface stimulates the release of systemic factors that promote endothelial dysfunction in vessels peripheral to the lung. AhR is a recognized regulator of microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis, and miRNA control diverse signaling pathways. We thus hypothesized …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

The CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has continued to increase over the past century and now poses an increasing potentially catastrophic effect to human life and the environment via global warming and the concomitant effect of climate change. Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions due to fossil fuel combustion for increasing energy demand is the main driver for the increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A multifaceted approach including carbon dioxide capture and utilization is required to mitigate anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Aerosol science and technology, an enabler for clean combustion technologies and nanomaterial synthesis, can contribute significantly to the advancement of …

Characterization Of Fibrotic Liver Tissue Microstructure For Predicting Shear Wave Speed Variability: A Machine-Learning-Based Computational Study, Emily J. Miller, Yongmei M. Jin, Jingfeng Jiang

Michigan Tech Publications

Objective: This study aimed to establish a link between the microstructure of simulated fibrotic liver tissues and the measured shear wave speed variability using a machine-learning-based approach. Approach: Fibrotic liver tissues were simulated using biphasic random fields. The underlying microstructure of the simulated fibrotic liver pathology (sFLP) was characterized using spatial pattern distribution analysis.A machine learning (ML) technique was implemented to identify top-rated spatial characteristic (SC) features and provide context for shear wave speed (SWS) variability, ultimately enabling us to use the SWS variability to infer its underlying tissue microstructure. Different combinations of top-three features were tested to understand the …

Impacts Of Riverine Heatwaves On Rates Of Ecosystem Metabolism In The United States, Spencer J. Tassone, Michelle Kelly, Olivia N. Beidler, Michael L. Pace, Amy Marcarelli Apr 2025

Impacts Of Riverine Heatwaves On Rates Of Ecosystem Metabolism In The United States, Spencer J. Tassone, Michelle Kelly, Olivia N. Beidler, Michael L. Pace, Amy Marcarelli

Michigan Tech Publications

Rivers produce and decompose large amounts of carbon globally due, in part, to high rates of gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER), collectively known as ecosystem metabolism. Water temperature is a major driver of ecosystem metabolism, and in-stream temperatures are increasing globally, including extreme temperature events called heatwaves. This study used published estimates of daily GPP and ER from 48 stream and river locations in the United States to examine how ecosystem metabolism responds to riverine heatwaves. During low-severity heatwaves, GPP and ER increase proportionally, resulting in no net difference. However, during severe and extreme heatwaves, GPP declined …
