Small Business Marketing And Advertising In Rural Communities: A Case Study Of Southern Illinois Restaurants, Steven J. Kosco
Small Business Marketing And Advertising In Rural Communities: A Case Study Of Southern Illinois Restaurants, Steven J. Kosco
Research Papers
A large majority of United States businesses are small businesses. Many of these small businesses operate in the country’s rural communities, where local owners face unique challenges to keep their businesses running. The unique challenges faced include differences in population size, access to wealth amongst rural community residents, and lack of internet accessibility for rural residents that affects interaction with digital advertising efforts, among others. Given these unique challenges, it is important to understand the successful practices that small businesses utilize.
The research included case studies and in-depth interviews with five restaurant businesses and a Chamber of Commerce member in …

Obesity is a major public health crisis associated with high mortality rates. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) investigating body mass index (BMI) have largely relied on imputed data from European individuals. This study leveraged whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from 88,873 participants from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program, of which 51% were of non-European population groups. We discovered 18 BMI-associated signals (P < 5 × 10

Enhancing Frequency Event Detection In Power Systems Using Two Optimization Methods With Variable Weighted Metrics, Hussain A. Alghamdi, Midrar A. Adham, Umar Farooq, Robert B. Bass
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This research presents a novel technique that refines the performance of a frequency event detection algorithm with four adjustable parameters based on signal processing and statistical methods. The algorithm parameters were optimized using two well-established optimization techniques: Grey Wolf Optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization. Unlike conventional approaches that apply equally weighted metrics within the objective function, this work implements variable weighted metrics that prioritize specificity, thereby strengthening detection accuracy by minimizing false-positive events. Realistic small- and large-scale frequency datasets were processed and analyzed, incorporating various events, quasi-events, and non-events obtained from a phasor measurement unit in the Western Interconnection. An …

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Maladaptive reward-seeking behavior can be driven by one of several different components including excessive craving elicited by cues that predict rewards, failing to effortfully pursue rewards when it is beneficial to do so, and compulsively seeking rewards when it is no longer advantageous to do so. This thesis includes experiments focusing on these three different components of reward-seeking behavior to better understand how reward-seeking can become maladaptive. First, we wanted to examine the role that sex plays in the acquisition and compulsiveness of sign-tracking behavior in the Long Evans rat, a strain that is commonly used as the background for …

Funding Opportunities For Non-Profit Organizations Led By Black Women, Laquasha A. Dixon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study addressed significant disparities in funding awarded to non-profit organizations (NPOs) in the United States, led by Black women. Racial bias and the lack of knowledge about alternative funding sources were key factors contributing to this funding gap, which limited the capabilities of these organizations. The research question guiding this study was: In addition to government grants and program sponsorships, what other funding sources are available to NPOs led by Black women? The conceptual framework employed as a foundation for the research was the concept of creating a diverse funding portfolio for sustainability. The purpose of the project was …

Examining School Counselors’ Lived Experiences Of Relational Aggression In African American Girls, Crystal Holt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the early 1990s, there have been examinations of the predictors of Relational Aggression (RA) in girls, but many questions remain unanswered that contribute to the lived experiences of school counselors addressing RA. RA is best defined as behavior that is deliberate and unfriendly, with the intent to cause harm to others through verbal, social, and emotional control. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of school counselors addressing RA in African American girls. A hermeneutic phenomenological lens was used to examine the individual perceptions of eight school counselors. Semistructured interviews were used to gather the …

Buddy The Elf And Pbis: When Good Intentions Are Misunderstood, Hank M. Bohanon
Buddy The Elf And Pbis: When Good Intentions Are Misunderstood, Hank M. Bohanon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
One of my favorite holiday movies is The Elf (link) with Will Ferrell. Buddy (the elf) had great intentions but was often misunderstood. Without knowing that he was raised by elves at the North Pole, people misinterpreted his attacking a “fake” Santa Claus and pouring syrup on spaghetti as a sign of instability.
Like Buddy’s behavior, people can take parts of schoolwide models (link) out of context. Without understanding the entire framework, staff may misconstrue the intent behind interventions. This lack of knowledge leads to frustrations and misunderstandings. Implementers often start with good intentions, but their …

Combating climate change has emerged as a global concern recently, and meteorological data remain an important measure for analyzing and predicting climate trends. However, ground weather stations and sensors can be impacted by faults due to accidents and unreliability, often resulting in, for example, missing data and lowering the overall quality of the data. This paper explores the impact of using satellite data as an input feature for machine learning algorithms. In particular, temperature, pressure, wind speed, and global horizontal radiation data are imputed using various machine learning algorithms to overcome potential data quality issues resulting from the ground stations. …

LMU Theses and Dissertations
This study was a qualitative examination of social justice praxis and its intersections with race, gender, and other facets of the identities of eight Latina former superintendents, referred to as the mujeres. A trio of theoretical frameworks that included Chicana feminist epistemology (Delgado Bernal, 1998), Community cultural wealth, or CCW, (Yosso, 2005) and applied critical leadership, or ACL, (Santamaría & Santamaría, 2012; Santamaría, 2014) were used to analyze how personal identity informed their approaches to advance social justice in their school districts. I engaged the methodological approach of pláticas [meaningful conversations] (Fierros & Delgado Bernal, 2016) to elicit reflection on …

Aims: Cancer care guidelines have been developed in many subspecialities, usually in advanced health systems. However, there are notable global disparities in healthcare access, which can impact sarcoma care. Unfortunately, there is a lack of global data on this subject. Our aim was to describe access to sarcoma care based on a comprehensive global survey among orthopaedic oncologists, and assess for global as well as regional differences.
Methods: A 25-question survey was emailed to the attendees of the 2024 Birmingham Orthopaedic Oncology Meeting and included questions about the respondents' training and practice, access to sarcoma centres, and specific items for …
