Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction
Chronic patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a heterogeneous pain condition that may significantly burden active duty service members, whose rigorous physical training demands include activities such as running and heavy load carriage. While chronic PFP is often defined by its pathoanatomical characteristics, evidence from other pain conditions (e.g., chronic low back pain) suggests classifying pain by its functional impact on work, social, and self-care activities may better inform personalized treatment approaches. As this approach has not been previously undertaken in chronic PFP or younger populations with chronic pain, this study aimed to characterize the global impact of PFP on day-to-day …

Personalized Discounts And Consumer Search, Zikun Liu, Jiwoong Shin, Jidong Zhou
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The growing availability of big data enables firms to predict consumer search outcomes and outside options more accurately than consumers themselves. This paper examines how a firm can utilize such superior information to offer personalized buy-now discounts intended to deter consumer search. However, discounts can also serve as signals of attractive outside options, potentially encouraging rather than discouraging consumer search. We show that, despite the firm’s ability to tailor discounts across a continuum of consumer valuations, the firm-optimal equilibrium features a simple two-tier discount scheme, comprising a uniform positive discount when the consumer outside option is intermediate and no discount …
High-Pressure Excursion In Oxygenators During Adult Cardiopulmonary Bypass: A Scoping Review, Anne Nguyen
High-Pressure Excursion In Oxygenators During Adult Cardiopulmonary Bypass: A Scoping Review, Anne Nguyen
Student Works
Background: High-pressure excursions (HPE) in oxygenators during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are rare but clinically significant events that can lead to compromised perfusion and adverse patient outcomes. HPE occurs due to fibrin and platelet deposition within the oxygenator, leading to increased transmembrane pressure and potential obstruction of blood flow. Despite its clinical importance, HPE remains an underrecognized issue with limited standardized guidelines for detection, prevention, and management.
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases and grey literature sources to identify studies reporting on HPE in CPB oxygenators. The selection process followed the PRISMA-ScR framework, with articles screened based …

Although 1775 is indisputably the birth year of the US Army, two events occurred on June 14 of that year to which the Army can credit its birthday. One is the adoption by the Continental Congress of the collective militia forces from several colonies outside Boston to form a Continental Army, of which Congress appointed George Washington the commander in chief on June 15, 1775. In addition, the US Regular Army officially dates its beginning to June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress directed 10 companies of expert riflemen to be raised immediately in Pennsylvania, …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Partnerships between cities and universities can help overcome the challenges of producing healthy plants free of pests and pathogens for urban planting and restoration. In Tacoma, a partnership with researchers from Washington State University (WSU) helped the City of Tacoma implement best management practices in its plant holding facility (PHF). The PHF is a critical resource for improving open spaces, managing stormwater, and fostering community environmental stewardship throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. It supports urban forestry and natural area restoration by cultivating 8000 native plants and 1000 street trees for planting into restoration sites and neighborhood streets respectively. While many …

An Approach To Model Uncertainty In Fluid Behaviour With Navier-Stokes Equations In Neutrosophic Environment, Muhammad Saeed, Attia Hameed, Neha Andaleeb Khalid, Muhammad Salman Habib
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The complex discipline of fluid dynamics examines the behavior of fluids and their interactions with adjacent objects. The Navier-Stokes equations are very important for explaining how fluids move, but they are not linear and often give answers that depend on the starting point and the boundaries. Modeling fluid behavior is challenging due to the inherently chaotic and unpredictable character of fluid dynamics. To deal with unknown or uncertain values in this research, we used neutrosophic logic to look at the Navier-Stokes equations in a new way. Neosophic logic permits the existence of values that are partially true and partially false; …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Due to urbanization and industrialization, rapid global change and the potential loss of arable land, agricultural output must rise in production levels and harvest, distribute, and use resources more efficiently. It is believed that using technology on livestock would help meet the expanding population's demand for food. Internet of Things (IoT) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) integration in conventional farming has transformed operations, providing farmers with greater productivity, improved decision-making, and sustainability. We assume that there are enough UAVs to cover the entire pasture, and our goal is to identify the best UAVs. Accordingly, determining the best type of UAVs …
Contact Graphs In Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Graphs, Takaaki Fujita
Contact Graphs In Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Graphs, Takaaki Fujita
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Graph Theory is a branch of mathematics dedicated to studying graphs, which depict relationships between objects through vertices and edges. A significant focus in this field is the study of contact graphs, where vertices correspond to sets, and edges represent intersections between those sets. To better model uncertainties in real-world situations, several graph types---such as fuzzy, neutrosophic, and Plithogenic graphs---have been developed. This paper investigates the concept of contact graphs within these frameworks, offering insights into their behavior under various uncertain conditions.

Zika virus (ZIKV) vertical transmission results in devastating congenital malformations and pregnancy complications; however, the specific receptor and host factors facilitating ZIKV maternal-fetal transmission remain elusive. Here, we employ a genome-wide CRISPR screening and identify multiple placenta-intrinsic factors modulating ZIKV infection. Our study unveils that hepatitis A virus cellular receptor 1 (HAVCR1) serves as a primary receptor governing ZIKV entry in placental trophoblasts. The GATA3-HAVCR1 axis regulates heterogeneous cell tropism in the placenta. Notably, placenta-specific Havcr1 deletion in mice significantly impairs ZIKV transplacental transmission and associated adverse pregnancy outcomes. Mechanistically, the immunoglobulin variable-like domain of HAVCR1 binds to ZIKV via …

Cognitive resilience (CR) contributes to the variability in risk for developing and progressing in Alzheimer's disease (AD) among individuals. Beyond genetics, recent studies highlight the critical role of lifestyle factors in enhancing CR and delaying cognitive decline. DNA methylation (DNAm), an epigenetic mechanism influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, including CR-related lifestyle factors, offers a promising pathway for understanding the biology of CR. We studied DNAm changes associated with the Resilience Index (RI), a composite measure of lifestyle factors, using blood samples from the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) cohort. After corrections for multiple comparisons, our analysis identified 19 CpGs …

Liposomes As Imaging Agents Of Inflammation And Oxidative Stress In Bone Implants, Delia Danila, Patricia S Pardo, R Devesh Kumar Misra, Aladin M Boriek
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Liposomes are tiny, spherical vesicles made from cholesterol and natural phospholipids that are promising imaging agents for detecting medical complications. They can carry fluorescent markers or other imaging agents, making them effective for medical imaging. Furthermore, liposomes can target specific cells involved in inflammation, such as macrophages, and accumulate at inflammation sites when injected. Additionally, liposomes can be designed to respond to oxidative stress, which is often associated with bone implant complications. By detecting areas of stress, liposomes provide valuable information about implant health. However, challenges such as rapid clearance from the body, precise targeting, immune reactions, and high production …

Ammonia is a promising candidate as a liquid hydrogen energy storage medium, but it requires catalytic decomposition (ammonia cracking) to regenerate hydrogen. Recently developed trimetallic ruthenium−potassium-promoter (RuKM) ammonia decomposition catalysts have exceptionally low ammonia decomposition temperatures, able to perform the decomposition as low as 250 °C, which is significantly lower than other known catalysts that require temperatures above 500 °C. However, the effects of the RuKM precursor on the catalytic activity have not been investigated. We report the observed differences of 3% ruthenium/12% potassium/1% yttrium (RuKY) catalysts on γ-alumina synthesized from chloride-, nitrate-, and acetate-based precursors. Catalysts synthesized from chloride-based …

Join the LAll, the UNM Department of Biology, and the Guadalupe Institute for a discussion about evolutionary biology in Latin America.
Evolutionary biology has been at the center of conflicts between science and religion for the last two centuries. In Latin America, the relationship between science in general-and evolution in particular-and religion varies dramatically as a function of the history and profiles of the countries in the region. Post-truth radicalism globally is pushing anti-science sentiment to new extremes, and urgent, defensive and offensive action is needed. There is also a …

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a key modulator of innate and adaptive immunity that has been extensively reported to promote tumor cell survival, proliferation, and metastasis. A recent study focusing on the microenvironment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) showed that pharmacological inhibition of MIF signaling, in vitro as well as in vivo, reduces AML cell survival. Such data highlights the crucial role of MIF in AML pathogenesis and support the efforts for developing selective MIF modulators. Here, we report the identification and crystallographic characterization of a MIF inhibitor (compound 1) with an allosteric binding motif. Single point screening of …

Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is an attractive way to mitigate the greenhouse gas effect that contributes to climate change. A series of donor-pi (D-π), acceptor-pi (A-π), and π Re(i) pyridyl imidazole complexes have been synthesized and examined under photocatalytic conditions for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The catalytic activity of the complexes was further supported by cyclic voltammetry through the presence of a catalytic current under CO2 atmosphere. The D-π, π, and A-π complexes were studied to elucidate the effects of incorporating conjugated electron donating vs. withdrawing groups on the catalytic rates and product selectivity. …

The NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome plays a pivotal role in the defense against bacterial infections, with its in vivo physiological function primarily recognized as driving inflammation in immune cells. Acute lung injury (ALI) is a leading cause of mortality in sepsis. In this study, we identify that the NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome is highly expressed in both macrophages and pulmonary fibroblasts and that pyroptosis of these cells plays a critical role in lung injury. Mice challenged with gram-negative bacteria or flagellin developed lethal lung injury, characterized by reduced blood oxygen saturation, disrupted lung barrier function, and escalated inflammation. Flagellin-induced lung injury was protected in …
Speed Of Shear Waves As A Function Of Frequency In Micellar Fluid, Michael Basha
Speed Of Shear Waves As A Function Of Frequency In Micellar Fluid, Michael Basha
Honors Theses
The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the frequency dependence of shear wave speed in a micellar fluid. A high-concentration CTAB-NaSal micellar fluid seeded with microspheres was used in the experiment. Shear waves were generated using a wave driver and a function generator, while a high-speed camera captured video recordings. Since the frequency of the wave driver producing the shear waves in the micellar fluid is a constant value set by the experimenter, changes in shear wave speed can be determined by measuring their wavelengths at different frequencies. The captured video was then broken down into frames using MATLAB. These …

In this research, two dyes of p-amino phenol were synthesized by reacting the diazonium salt of p-amino phenol with aromatic compounds, including 1-naphthol and p-amino phenol. The new dyes (a and b) were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and measurements of some physical properties. The inhibitory activity of the prepared azo compounds against corrosion of carbon steel type C45 in HCl (0.1 M) medium was investigated experimentally by electrochemical measurements. The quantum mechanical method was used to calculate the geometrical structure and physical properties using the Gaussian 09 W program and the density functional theory (DFT) of B3LYP at the 6-311+G …
