Automating Course Scheduling With Linear Programming And The Python Pulp Framework: First Steps, George K. Thiruvathukal
Automating Course Scheduling With Linear Programming And The Python Pulp Framework: First Steps, George K. Thiruvathukal
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article presents a pragmatic approach to automating course scheduling in an academic setting using linear programming.
We explore how linear optimization via current open-source tools can efficiently handle scheduling constraints such as instructor preferences, teaching loads, course section requirements, and specific time slots. Using Python’s PuLP library and matplotlib for visualization, we built a flexible and accessible scheduling system.
Our research prototype balances course assignments while addressing department-specific needs, demonstrating how linear programming can simplify academic scheduling and improve efficiency.
Although this is a research prototype, our results already demonstrate the ability to generate a correct course schedule that …

Smart agriculture has grown significantly over the last few years, particularly with the integration of advanced technologies (e.g., the Internet of Things, robots, artificial intelligence, etc.), leading to the development of intelligent agricultural systems. However, these systems often lack data integration, interoperability, and semantic explainability. Various approaches have been proposed to address these challenges. This study provides a comprehensive literature review that addresses, on the one hand, the use of semantic resources (e.g., semantic web technologies and ontologies) to tackle data integration and interoperability in smart agriculture systems and, on the other hand, the integration of explainable artificial intelligence into …

Balancing Privacy And Security: A Comparative Analysis Of Ai-Driven Surveillance In The Uae And Usa, Belal Alghafri, Abdallah Tubaishat
All Works
AI-driven surveillance has emerged as a critical tool for enhancing public safety, enabling authorities to monitor and prevent crime and terrorism more effectively. In countries like the UAE and the USA, these systems are often implemented under the pretext of national security, offering advanced methods to track potential threats. However, the increasing reliance on AI for surveillance raises significant ethical concerns about privacy and individual freedoms. The boundary between protecting citizens and infringing on their privacy becomes increasingly blurred, potentially leading to abuses of power, diminished public trust, and a pervasive atmosphere of fear. This paper explores the complex relationship …

New Insights Into Epileptic Spasm Generation And Treatment From The Ttx Animal Model, John W Swann, Carlos J Ballester-Rosado, Chih-Hong Lee
Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications
Currently, we have an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms underlying infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS). However, over the past decade, significant efforts have been made to develop IESS animal models to provide much-needed mechanistic information for therapy development. Our laboratory has focused on the TTX model and in this paper, we review some of our findings. To induce spasms, tetrodotoxin (TTX) is infused into the neocortex of infant rats. TTX produces a lesion at its infusion site and thus mimics IESS resulting from acquired structural brain abnormalities. Subsequent electrophysiological studies showed that the epileptic spasms originate from neocortical layer V …

When higher education institutions rely on a single office to provide primarily in-class accommodations for students with diagnosed disabilities, practitioners beyond this office receive little guidance on supporting the broader disabled community in daily practices. By critiquing the dominant models, theories, interventions, and solutions that create an ambiguous responsibility for how practitioners are to include and accommodate disabled people the project can outline alternative methods. A culture of ableism and rampant inaccessibility is innate to how North American higher education operates as an institutional practice. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is treated like a successful initiative that guarantees …

In the United States, the number of individuals with disabilities who pursue a college degree has increased. According to Wagner et al. (2018), 26% of people with disabilities pursued postsecondary education, whether at a two-year (20%) or four-year program (6%). Retention of students with disabilities, however, remains an issue. 41% of all college students with disabilities left school before graduation compared to 33% of their typically abled peers. Disabled students are also more likely to struggle with loneliness and isolation on campus due to a lack of sense of belonging. Having a strong campus community leads to better retention and …

Nash Equilibrium Solutions For Continuous Static Games Under Neutrosophic Environment, M. G. Brikaa
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Neutrosophic set theory plays an important role in dealing with the impreciseness and inconsistency in data encountered in solving real life problems. This paper presents a novel approach to solving a new class of continuous static games within a neutrosophic framework. In the proposed methodology, the neutrosophic continuous static games are redefined into two separate crisp problems: the lower problem and the upper problem. The study further establishes the necessary conditions for determining equilibrium strategies in neutrosophic continuous static games. To demonstrate its effectiveness and practical applicability, the proposed method is validated through a numerical example.

Tenant moved to dismiss a nonpayment proceeding arguing that the rent demand overstated the legal rent due, rendering it defective. The landlord sought rent based on a concession rider, asserting the legal regulated rent was $1,472.41 and charging $1,522.41 for some months, despite a pattern of charging $1,300 through biannual credits. The court found that the concession functioned as a preferential rent under recent case law and DHCR guidance. Since preferential rents must remain for the duration of the tenancy under HSTPA, the higher amounts sought were improper. The rent demand was thus not a good faith approximation of what …

In this rent-stabilized nonpayment proceeding, tenant moved for summary judgment seeking dismissal based on a prior action pending, lack of standing under LLC Law §206, and the absence of a valid lease. While the court rejected the first two arguments "finding no duplicative proceeding and holding that the foreign LLC's filing deficiencies were curable under LLC Law §802" the court granted dismissal due to the absence of privity of contract. The alleged renewal lease was unsigned by any landlord and still listed the prior owner. Without a fully executed lease, there was no binding rental agreement at the time of …

Over the past 30 years, academic and industrial research investigators have developed molecular reporters to visualize cell death in complex biological systems. In parallel, clinical researchers, chemists, biochemists, and molecular biologists have endeavored to translate these molecular tools into clinical imaging agents. Despite these efforts, there are no clinically approved imaging methodologies with which to image cell death consistently and quantitatively. One reason may reside in the intrinsic mismatch between the sampling frequency of translational molecular imaging and the biochemical kinetics that define cell death. Beyond cell death imaging, many active research programs are now attempting to create translational diagnostic …

The clustering of multiple transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) for the same TF has proved to be a pervasive feature of cis-regulatory elements in the eukaryotic genome. However, the contribution of binding sites within the homotypic clusters of TFBSs (HCTs) to TF binding and target gene expression remains to be understood. Here, we characterize the CHD4 enhancers that harbor unique functional ZNF410 HCTs genome wide. We uncover that ZNF410 controls chromatin accessibility and activity of the CHD4 enhancer regions. We demonstrate that ZNF410 binds to the HCTs in a collaborative fashion, further conferring transcriptional activation. In particular, three ZNF410 motifs …

Safe Robot Planning Through Reachability Analysis Of Human Behaviors, Haoyi Wang
Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research
This paper introduces a novel approach to human-robot interaction that enables robots to safely navigate shared spaces by actively gathering information about human internal states. We model human behavior as influenced by latent variables representing attentiveness and driving style, which cannot be directly observed by the robot. Our key contribution is a sampling-based reachability analysis method that integrates belief updates over human internal states with adaptive interval refinement, allowing robots to maintain probabilistic safety guarantees while efficiently planning their actions. Unlike passive observation approaches, our framework enables robots to purposefully execute probing actions that clarify human internal states, accelerating belief …

Global Ocean Bottom Temperature Observation Design: Observing System Simulation Experiments For Strategic Deployment Of Smart Subsea Cables, Karen E. Renninger-Rojas
LSU Master's Theses
Deep-ocean observations below 2000 meters remain limited, restricting our ability to model global ocean processes critical to climate prediction. This thesis evaluates the potential of SMART (Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications) subsea cables to address these observational gaps by conducting Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) and adjoint sensitivity analyses using the MITgcm ocean model and ECCO outputs.
Vertical decorrelation analysis showed that temperature and salinity in key regions decouple from the upper ocean beyond 2000 m. Over 60% of the proposed SMART cable sites exhibited decorrelation depths exceeding Argo’s maximum sampling depth, highlighting their strategic value for deployment.

Final Project Report: Lift Bed For The Mobility Impaired, Daniel Chia, Rachel Curtis, Max Jung, Jaxson Kapellusch
Engineering Senior Design Reports
The global environment has progressively adapted to better accommodate individuals with mobility impairments, driven primarily by governmental regulations mandating increased accessibility in public spaces. In contrast, private residences often lacked such adaptations, leaving individuals responsible for procuring and implementing solutions tailored to their specific needs. While various assistive products were available, the high associated costs frequently discouraged their adoption, fostering the user’s feelings of being a burden and delaying access to potentially life-enhancing solutions. To address this issue, Dr. Enright sponsored the development of a lift bed, which functioned as a standard bed while also enabling low effort transitions to …
