This article examines the challenge of communicating the often invisible risks of environmental pollution, focusing on metal contamination in urban soils. Using the Champ des Possibles (CDP), a former industrial site in Montreal, as a case study, we critique the limitations of traditional data visualization methods in fostering public engagement with such abstract and intangible phenomena. To address this gap, we introduce two complementary concepts: transduction and data polysensualization. Transduction refers to the process of converting abstract data, such as numerical representations of metal concentrations, into sensory signals: light patterns, soundscapes, tactile vibrations, etc. This process enables to directly perceive …

While the concept and practice of legends in data visualization are well-established, the field of data sonification is still working towards explicit design guidelines. The present paper reports an exploratory study investigating the embodied experience of combining audio and visuals in legends, focusing on its effect on non-expert audiences. Through this integration, the research highlights sound’s unique potential to convey information and expand how data is perceived and understood. We employed the Research Through Design (RtD) methodology across two iterative case studies: focus group and experiment. The focus group study explored participants’ (N = 4) perceptions of the balance between …

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
We live in a world bloated with data yet starved for wisdom (Kapuʻuwailani Lindsey 2012). As sustainability challenges grow increasingly complex, the limitations of traditional, data-centric research approaches become apparent. This paper argues that the transition towards sustainability necessitates not just technological innovations, but a fundamental ontological shift in how we structure knowledge claims. Modernist systems of values in research, characterised by control, reductionism, and quantification, often marginalised tacit knowledge, indigenous ways of knowing, and intuition. Specifically, this paper advocates for the adoption of Research through Design (RtD) as a methodological paradigm that bridges the gap between quantifiable data and …
Post-Futures: A Speculative Design Method Integrating Data Fiction For Design-Futures Education, Maria Maciejko, Alejandro Lecuna
Post-Futures: A Speculative Design Method Integrating Data Fiction For Design-Futures Education, Maria Maciejko, Alejandro Lecuna
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Designing for the future presents numerous challenges, primarily because the future is inherently uncertain. Factors such as unknown environmental contexts, potential feasibility constraints, and evolving user needs complicate the task of designing for the unknown. Speculative design attempts to envision future worlds and the artifacts that might inhabit them; however, traditional data-based speculations often fall short when addressing long-term futures. This paper elaborates on the concept of data fictions, data that is imagined to exist in future scenarios and emerges from speculative inquiries about potential futures. Through its explanatory role it facilitates speculations on future worlds, where data is unavailable. …

GeoAI technologies have expanded the analytic power of cartography by processing vast geospatial datasetsto detect patterns, generate multiscale maps, and unify siloed information. Despite their innovation, suchsystems often reinforce static spatial conventions, treating maps as neutral outputs and uncertainty, whetherwithin datasets or landscapes, as an issue to be resolved. This paper calls for a critical reorientation ofGeoAI’s epistemological foundation, proposing that uncertainty be understood not as a limitation but as thefoundation for grounding new protocols of spatial representation. Building on the two key concepts of latencyand liminality, we develop a framework for understanding uncertainty as both an epistemic gap and …

Richness And Ambiguity: Mapping Artificial Intelligence Labels In Human-Ai Collaboration Research, Fabio Antonio Figoli, Alessandra Facchin, Beatrice Gobbo, Francesca Mattioli
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Artificial intelligence has rapidly gained prominence across industries and academia. However, its swift diffusion, coupled with the interdisciplinary nature of related studies, has resulted in fragmented literature, making it challenging to align diverse perspectives under shared and identifiable research trajectories. This challenge became evident while working with data from a systematic literature review we previously conducted on artificial intelligence in human-AI collaboration studies within design-related fields. Building upon this dataset, we examined how researchers label artificial intelligence in their work, recognising terminology as a central factor contributing to this fragmentation. Through an exploratory study, we identified 79 unique labels, categorising …

Towards Distributed Creativity: Understanding Generative Ai In The Context Of Design Philosophy And The Material Turn, Ákos Schneider, Dávid Csűrös
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This study examines the transformative role of generative AI (GenAI) in design through the lens of the material turn, which foregrounds materiality’s agency in shaping human practices. In this context, GenAI is not a mere tool but an active participant in co-creation, challenging subject-object distinctions in design philosophy. Drawing on ontological design, postphenomenology, cognitive science, and material engagement theory, we reinterpret creativity as an emergent phenomenon within sociomaterial networks. Our framework reveals design as a relational process, where creativity unfolds through adaptive interactions, shifting the designer’s role from control to orchestration. We conclude by highlighting the subject- and object-decentered interpretation …

Craftsman Gaze Data Study To Enhance Craft Material Selection And Facilitate Knowledge Transfer, Catherine Schwarz, Jean-François Bassereau, Jenny Faucheu
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Material selection methods and tools are mainly quantitative multicriteria based and cater essentially to engineering material selection requirements. However, shifts in material sourcing and manufacturing as well as data processing tend to lean towards tailored fabrication models in which the material leads the design. This highlights emerging opportunities and requirements in material selection, including the need to consider the situation of the person making the assessment, which has come to the forefront of material selection. Designers and researchers have already provided valuable research to enhance material selection on a sensorial basis. However, little has been recommended for material selection based …
Wide Lock-In Energy Harvesting From Vortex-Induced Vibrations Of A Deformable Cylinder, Ahmed Raafat Mostafa
Wide Lock-In Energy Harvesting From Vortex-Induced Vibrations Of A Deformable Cylinder, Ahmed Raafat Mostafa
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Energy harvesting from ambient sources has gained attention due to increasing energy demands. Despite VIV-based harvesters showing significant potential, their lock-in region, where significant power is generated, is narrow. Given the continuously varying ambient conditions of fluid currents, harvesters can easily fall into de-synchronization, yielding low energy output. Existing solutions like tunable masses or multiple degrees of freedom systems increase complexity and weight, limiting practical applications. This work introduces a novel variable diameter cylinder mechanism—a practical technique that actively tunes the cylinder’s geometry in real time to enhance energy harvesting efficiency from VIV. The mechanism employs an expanding pulley system …

Nyc In Crisis: How The Tiny But Mighty Atlantic Oyster Could Fix Nyc’S Aquatic Problems, Ariella Hatch Tuchman
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper addresses how modern policy and an extensive history of unsustainable environmental practices in New York have led to the destruction of the Oyster Reef of New York Harbor and the extreme flooding and pollution in the water system that came from it. The Oyster Reef was seen as a valuable food source going back to the Lenape tribe. Over time, this has served to the detriment of the reef as its resources have been overestimated and depleted. Chapters 1 and 2 use mainly quantitative data to connect the reef's decline to the decline in the quality of seawater …

Osteoporosis is defined as a heterogeneous bone disease that leads to weakening in the structure of bones. Bone structure remains dynamic throughout an individual’s life, it undergoes continuous growth and resorption in a specific mechanism called bone turnover. Osteoporosis assumes the perturbation of equilibrium of the growth to destruction towards the destructive away. Bone turnover markers consider as indicators for pathway of bone turning over, it classified into two groups: first group to build the bones, the second group to break it down. By using bio tests and assays, these markers can be evaluated to monitor the activity of the …
