Real-Time Habs Early Warning System And Alerts For Coastal Communities, Shelby Brunner

Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)

The early warning system (EWS) and alerts for HABs and related water quality events were developed at the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) to help coastal community members including water treatment plant managers, business owners, and recreators, have the most up-to-date information for their decision making needs. Since initially being developed, the system has expanded to allow alerts from any near real-time platform. The system is designed to allow users to identify the most important parameters for their needs, the threshold that triggers an alert, and how they want it delivered. The system is built into GLOS’ data platform Seagull …

Echoes Of Exclusion: The Underrepresentation Of Women In Congressional Testimony And Its Consequences For Judicial Decision-Making, Caroline L. Bruckner, Elizabeth Keith, Karen O'Connor, Collin A. Coil

ConLawNOW

Congressional hearing witnesses play a major role in the legislative process, providing information to committees to assist members and staff in crafting legislation. Recently, there has been increasing focus on the impact of congressional witnesses on legislative outcomes, executive implementation of federal statutes, and corresponding judicial decisions. This has raised questions as to the extent to which the underrepresentation of women and other marginalized groups as congressional witnesses can be measured and how their lack of representation translates to inequitable outcomes across all branches of government. This work explores the widespread use of congressional witness testimony in recent U.S. Supreme …

Quiet Times: The Application Of Self-Management To Private Spiritual Practices, Noah R. Branson May 2025

Quiet Times: The Application Of Self-Management To Private Spiritual Practices, Noah R. Branson

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

A “quiet time” refers to the private spiritual practice of reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on one’s own initiative outside of religious sanctioned events. This study examines the effect of a self-management intervention on establishing and maintaining the habit of a daily quiet time. The study’s hypotheses predicted there would be an increase in quiet time 1) frequency, 2) duration, and 3) overall satisfaction from the baseline phase to the intervention phase. Data was collected via a daily check-in and pretest/posttest surveys, and participants attended an in-person intervention to determine how to apply self-management tactics to their own personal …

How Do Design Students Use Data In Physicalization Courses?, Damla Çay, Mary Karyda, Mihály Minkó, Judit Boros

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Data physicalization provides a hands-on approach to making data tangible, yet how students interpret and integrate data remains underexplored. This study examines three master level courses, analyzing how students incorporated data into their projects. Through critically reflecting on the course process and reviewing three student projects, we illustrate the evolving roles of data. We observed that data served multiple functions, including providing foundational knowledge, inspiring concepts, informing material choices, guiding ideation, and supporting narrative-driven designs, while also presenting challenges in processing and integration for students with limited data handling experience. We discuss the evolving roles of data in design education …

The Future Of The Footwear Industry: Bibliometric And Systematic Analysis Of Literature From 2018 To 2023, Miguel Terroso, Adriana Amorim, Ivo Rodrigues

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The footwear industry in Portugal is one of the sectors with the greatest representation in national exports and a sector of high importance for the country's economy. Although it is a mechanized industry, it is still very dependent on human labour and for which it is increasingly difficult to attract talent and captivate younger generations, putting this sector in danger in terms of its continuity. The digitalization of the footwear industry could be one of the alternatives to solve this problem, enabling cost reduction, greater autonomy, and production flexibility, as well as a closer approach to the demands of customers …

An Intuitive Approach To Enstoriment During Demonstrator Design Process: A Pilot Case Study, Aleksandra Sviridova, Jouke Verlinden May 2025

An Intuitive Approach To Enstoriment During Demonstrator Design Process: A Pilot Case Study, Aleksandra Sviridova, Jouke Verlinden

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Demonstrators, versatile concepts that combine engineering, art, and design are commonly used to communicate technology research. Due to the high complexity and abstractness of such research, product development designers face challenges during the design process. One of the key factors is 'enstoriment', the process of turning concepts into stories and then making them visible through tangible artifacts. The authors of this paper have experienced this in their practice. They had to design a demonstrator without any information on how to do it. In order to see how other designers would approach a similar task without any prior guidance, a pilot …

Materializing More-Than-Human Data Through Mapping Wools, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Merve Bektaş, Camilo Ayala Garcia

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper explores how data, through design, can take the form of new materialities, by mapping wool and revealing its close relationship with humans, sheep, and the more-than-human world. Globalization is putting local wool realities, along with their broader ecological systems, increasingly at risk. Focusing on local wool, which is connected to the animals and their ecosystem, we explore how invisible data can be uncovered and reinterpreted to foster a deeper understanding of the entanglements of highly vital material and highlight opportunities for alternative narratives. Using participatory methods and design probes as primary methodologies, the research examines how these approaches …

Embodied Data: Gleaning Narratives Of Living With Chronic Gut Diseases To Guide The Design Process, Arife Dila Demir

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Designing for individuals with chronic diseases requires a deep understanding of their lived experiences, as these provide valuable insights into the complexities of living with such conditions. This paper highlights the importance of leveraging the experiential knowledge of those impacted, which emerges from their bodily experiences. Such knowledge constitutes lived narratives that are considered embodied data in this paper. These embodied narratives serve as a rich source of inspiration, enabling designers to develop meaningful processes and solutions that better support people. In this paper, I specifically discuss how embracing ambiguity in the research direction allows designers to co-create a research …

A better understanding of experiences of health data can ultimately contribute to the development of more inclusive and empathetic health technologies. This research points out …

How Do You Feel? Physical Vocabularies For Communicating Pain Using Data Physicalization, Adam Drogemuller, Xiaojiao Du, Aaron Davis, Felicity Braithwaite, Ian Gwilt May 2025

How Do You Feel? Physical Vocabularies For Communicating Pain Using Data Physicalization, Adam Drogemuller, Xiaojiao Du, Aaron Davis, Felicity Braithwaite, Ian Gwilt

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The experience of pain, particularly chronic pain, can be difficult to communicate. Current best practice involves communicating pain to clinicians verbally on a numerical scale or via a visual Likert scale. However, we argue that verbal vocabularies and visual scales do not effectively capture the complexities and narrative journey of individuals recovering and living through chronic pain. We argue that as pain is a multidimensional experience that includes physical and physiological elements, we need a more nuanced way of describing the experience. Thus, we have explored how people can explain their pain (whether affective or sensory) by interacting with a …

Situated Truths: Models Of Interpretation In Designing With Data, Kevin Lahoda May 2025

Situated Truths: Models Of Interpretation In Designing With Data, Kevin Lahoda

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Design work today is often found situated in multifaceted, interdisciplinary projects that attempt to address real world issues. Designers are useful in this pursuit as they act as agents who seek ways to use data to connect, synthesize, visualize, and interpret such issues in ways that are not as bound to disciplinary structures. As a counterpoint to the solution-centric, rationalist approach to design where the responsibility of the designer lies primarily in service to the development of well-rehearsed forms that manifest an implied underlying truth to data as given, this paper takes the position of recentering the experience and situatedness …
