An Integrated Approach To Supporting Undergraduate Students Through Wellness And Community, Nicole Manning
An Integrated Approach To Supporting Undergraduate Students Through Wellness And Community, Nicole Manning
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
Students experience mounting levels of stress due to the demands of balancing academics and social relationships. These influences can cause negative effects on the mind and body. Empowering students with resources for holistic wellbeing could relieve stress, create a nurturing environment, and impact their overall success at University of San Diego (USD). My project assisted in a course where undergraduate students develop skills to thrive personally beyond their time at USD. The research question that drove my study was: How can I help develop a successful holistic wellness course to support students in relieving stress? I completed three cycles which …
Gut Microbiome Changes In Urbanizing Brazil And Their Implications For Metabolic Health, Jazmin Villalba Gimenez
Gut Microbiome Changes In Urbanizing Brazil And Their Implications For Metabolic Health, Jazmin Villalba Gimenez
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
Urbanization has been associated with significant changes in diet, environment and lifestyle, all of which can influence the composition and function of the human gut microbiota. This meta-analysis systematically reviewed and synthesized findings from 11 studies examining gut microbiota differences between urban and rural populations in Brazil. The analysis focused on microbial diversity, taxonomic composition, dietary patterns, and implication for metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Results showed that rural populations consistently exhibited higher alpha diversity and greater abundance of beneficial short-chain fatty acid producing bacteria, including Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, and Treponema, reflecting traditional, high fiber diets. In …

Applications Of The Mathieu Groups And Information Theory In Dna Encoding Functions, Juan C. Nava Jr
Applications Of The Mathieu Groups And Information Theory In Dna Encoding Functions, Juan C. Nava Jr
Theses and Dissertations
A foundational idea in mathematics lies in breaking down existing components into their bare fundamentals. As evidenced by prime numbers and composites, we learn this idea at an early age. Categorizing these broken-down components into their simplest form allows mathematicians to construct proofs from emergent patterns. John Conway’s Atlas of Finite Groups in the 1990s was particularly concerned with the categorization of structures known as groups. There are certain axioms a group must adhere to, which amount to the retention of symmetry; ultimately a group helps us to better understand symmetric actions performed on a set with a binary operation. …
Mock Juror Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Rape Victims: The Effects Of Mental Illness And Emotional Expression, Kristina Lambert
Mock Juror Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Rape Victims: The Effects Of Mental Illness And Emotional Expression, Kristina Lambert
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Intimate partner rape (IPR), defined as non-consensual sexual intercourse between domestic partners, has a high prevalence rate especially among women with mental illness, yet it is highly under-convicted. This is often due to a lack of evidence in rape cases resulting in jurors relying on extralegal factors, such as a victim’s mental illness or emotional expression, in their decision making. Jurors may provide lower pro-victim judgments (e.g., guilty verdicts, victim credibility) when a victim has a mental illness, whereas jurors often expect a victim to express emotions, which can increase pro-victim judgments. The present study examined mock juror perceptions of …
Knowledge Gaps And Personal Experiences: A Qualitative Examination Of Women's Menstrual Health And Birth Control Choices, Danielle M. Jackson
Knowledge Gaps And Personal Experiences: A Qualitative Examination Of Women's Menstrual Health And Birth Control Choices, Danielle M. Jackson
Honors Theses
Women all over the world face significant knowledge gaps and societal perceptions (Mukanga et al., 2023) regarding menstruation and birth control, which impact their understanding of both the physical and mental symptoms associated with these experiences. From a young age, women are often left to navigate these processes without sufficient education or support, leading to confusion, misconceptions, and a lack of empowerment when it comes to managing their reproductive health (Guendelman et al., 2000). The stigma surrounding topics like menstruation and hormonal contraception can further isolate women, making it difficult for them to seek reliable information or openly discuss their …
Family Involvement In Pediatric Occupational Therapy Interventions: A Qualitative Study, Maylee S. Collins
Family Involvement In Pediatric Occupational Therapy Interventions: A Qualitative Study, Maylee S. Collins
Honors Theses
In recent years, family involvement has increasingly been recognized as a critical component of effective pediatric occupational therapy (OT) interventions. Research suggests that parents who actively participate in OT can enhance a child’s engagement, motivation, and therapy outcomes (Sayers et al., 2021). However, the specific experiences and perspectives of parents and families, particularly regarding how they view their role and the impact of their involvement on therapy outcomes, remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate parental perceptions, challenges, and the perceived benefits of involvement in OT interventions, and adding to the understanding of how family collaboration can optimize therapeutic outcomes …

Body Composition And Self-Image: Exploring The Impact On Exercise Motivation And Behavior, Demitria J. Watson
Honors Theses
This study examines how self-perception and body composition (body fat percentage, lean mass, etc.) influence psychological and behavioral outcomes among college students. The research explores how body composition metrics are related to psychological factors such as stress management, enjoyment of physical activity, and leisure activity, and how appearance scores, as a reflection of self-perception, influence these outcomes. Drawing on a sample of 100 undergraduates from Eastern Kentucky University, data were collected through self-reported surveys measuring body satisfaction, exercise frequency, and motivational factors, alongside objective body composition metrics. Statistical analyses revealed that higher appearance scores were associated with better stress management …

Gnns For Network Classification In Single Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Reid C. Sewell
Gnns For Network Classification In Single Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Reid C. Sewell
Capstone Projects
A common technique when investigating a disease is to profile gene expression, as this gives unique insights into the functions of a cell. Gene expression data gathered from single cell RNA sequencing can be encoded into a gene co-expression network, which is a graph of potential relationships between different genes. One method for interpreting data encoded as a graph is to use a graph neural network, or GNN. This project designs and implements a GNN architecture to accomplish classification tasks on graph data. Then, given a dataset of gene co-expression networks made from multiple single cell RNA sequencing studies, the …

The incidence of dementia, and specifically, Alzheimer’s disease, is higher in women than men, even in middle age, making it possible to rule out lifespan differences between men and women as a contributing factor. Thus, it is plausible that pregnancy experience, which is unique to women, may play a contributing role. In this review, we discuss the different hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, clinical, epidemiological, and preclinical studies that link a history of HDP with dementia. We also present potential mechanisms linking HDP, Alzheimer’s, and vascular dementia. Several key symptoms that are shared among the disorders …

Judge Roy Bean was a legendary justice of the peace in Texas, known as the “Law West of the Pecos.” However, he was not known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the law. Judge Bean “had only one law book, a copy of the Revised Statutes of Texas, printed in 1879, as authorized by the Sixteenth Texas Legislature.” He relied exclusively on that book, and “[e]ven though the legislature sent him new books every two years, reflecting new laws, he burned them. He said he liked the old book better and he like those laws better, too.”

Phosphomimetic Substitution Of Serine Residue Ser260 With Aspartate Suggests Regulation Of Activity Of Human Cytosolic Malate Dehydrogenase By Phosphorylation, Charles Pelagalli '25, Luke Tischio, Kathleen Cornely
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Human cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (MDH1) is a key enzyme involved in the malate-aspartate shuttle of eukaryotic cells, and which catalyzes the reaction of oxaloacetate to malate. As MDH1 is responsible for maintaining redox homeostasis by regeneration of NAD+ for glycolysis, its regulation is of particular interest in pharmaceutical applications, specifically in treating cancer cells that proliferate quickly and hence rely greatly on glycolysis. While the regulation of MDH1 by the phosphorylation of key residues has been previously documented, work still remains in identifying the specific residues involved in regulation of the enzyme by phosphorylation. In this study, we used …

Deep Learning Classification Of Drainage Crossings Based On High-Resolution Dem-Derived Geomorphological Information, Michael Edidem, Bill Xu, Ruopu Li, Di Wu, Banafsheh Rekabdar, Guangxing Wang
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
High-resolution digital elevation models (HRDEMs) from LiDAR and InSAR technologies have significantly improved the accuracies of mapping hydrographic features such as river boundaries, streamlines, and waterbodies over large areas. However, drainage crossings that facilitate the passage of drainage flows beneath roads are not often represented in HRDEMs, resulting in erratic or distorted hydrographic features. At present, drainage crossing datasets are largely missing or available with variable quality. While previous studies have investigated basic convolutional neural network (CNN) models for drainage crossing characterization, it remains unclear if advanced deep learning models will improve the accuracy of drainage crossing classification. Although HRDEM-derived …

Examining The Transition Planning Process For Students With High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sara Elizabeth Mathis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically experience less postsecondary success when compared to their neurotypical peers. The specific problem addressed in this study is that many students with ASD in the rural communities of Southwest Missouri are not experiencing post-graduation success. Guided by Schlossberg’s transition theory and Kohler’s taxonomy for transition programming 2.0, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore secondary special education teachers’ perceptions of the transition planning process for students with ASD related to successes, challenges, and needed support. Ten special education teachers, representing five different schools, who worked directly with the transition …
Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Problematic Sexuality: A Comparative Analysis Using The Midsa Assessment, Brandon Andrew Lozano
Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Problematic Sexuality: A Comparative Analysis Using The Midsa Assessment, Brandon Andrew Lozano
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Problematic sexuality among college students is a complex and understudied issue, particularly regarding gender-based differences in affective instability and sexual compulsivity. While prior research has focused mainly on male populations, limited evidence exists about how these factors manifest among female students or whether gender moderates these relationships. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to examine whether gender moderates the relationship between factors affecting sexual compulsivity as measured by the Multidimensional Inventory of Development, Sex, and Aggression (MIDSA). The MIDSA, originally developed for male sexual offenders, has since been administered to both male and female populations. Findings from hierarchical …
Finnish Fashion Lessons For The Creation Of A Sustainable Textiles Industry, Susanna Monseau, Kaisa Sorsa, Heidi Salokangas
Finnish Fashion Lessons For The Creation Of A Sustainable Textiles Industry, Susanna Monseau, Kaisa Sorsa, Heidi Salokangas
Pace International Law Review
The detrimental effects of textiles and the fashion industry on the planet are well-known.
In its 2022 Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles (the EU Textile Strategy) the EU proposed aggressive actions to transform the textile industry to implement the commitments of Europe’s Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan. The Textile Strategy’s aim is simple but ambitious: to end fast fashion. Its proposals will regulate textile businesses along the whole supply chain, but the views of the smaller enterprises that make up the majority of the supply chain have been overlooked, even as larger players lobby for policy changes. …
