This dissertation examines the agropastoral practices in the Eurasian landmass between the 3rd millennium BCE to 1st millennium CE, focusing on characterizing how communities living in mountainous Inner Asia incorporated plant cultivation into their mobile agropastoralist lifestyle. I examine macrobotanical remains from key archaeological sites along the routes of the trans-Eurasian exchange of domesticated plants and animals and various technologies during the Bronze and Iron Ages. These sites include Chap, Kyrgyzstan, Tasbas, Kazakhstan, and Dingdong, Piyang, Jiweng, Kaerdong, and Bangga, located in Tibet. This capstone project aimed to develop clinical skills and implement an occupation-based program for Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) children at Metro Deaf School in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Guided by the Dynamic Family Systems Model, Lifespan Development, and Sensory Integration Theory, the project emphasized holistic, family-centered care, skill development, environmental modifications, and promotion of regulation and participation. Clinical skill development was assessed using the Theory Application Assessment Instrument (TAAI) and a site mentor survey. An 8-point improvement from pretest to posttest on the TAAI indicated enhanced theory use skills, and the mentor survey reflected high satisfaction. The program included a five-week …

While most preclinical and clinical studies on hypertension focus on prognosis and treatment, there are still no specific therapeutic approaches for primary and essential hypertension. This doctoral project implemented a staff education program to enhance early recognition and escalation of patient deterioration. Conducted at a 343-bed acute care hospital, the initiative addressed the ongoing problem of delayed detection and response to clinical decline, which often results in rapid response team activations and code blue events. Delays in intervention increase patient morbidity and mortality, despite many of these events being preventable through timely action. The project evaluated whether an interactive targeted education program could improve nursing staff’s knowledge, confidence, and willingness to activate escalation protocols, including Condition H and Code Help. INTRODUCTION: Despite effective treatment for opioid use disorder, access to care is limited. Increased availability of evidence-based medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment within primary care is urgently needed. This study describes efforts to increase MOUD services within a large urban primary care practice.

METHODS: After an internal assessment of barriers to MOUD services, a two-phase approach was used to educate providers and to implement MOUD services within a primary care practice over 2.5 years. A quiver Q is a directed multigraph. Representations of Q are assignments of vector spaces and linear maps to the vertices and arrows of Q; these are categorically equivalent to the modules over the path algebra kQ. The indecomposable representations of a given quiver and the irreducible morphisms between them are summarized combinatorially in the Auslander-Reiten quiver which, in the case of algebras of finite representation type, gives almost complete information about the category of representations. We introduce an intuitive transformation from a family of bound quivers to a family of A-type quivers which preserves properties of the Auslander-Reiten quiver.

Structuring socio-political identities, the caste system (a graded form of hierarchy) remains entrenched in contemporary Indian society. Dalits, marginalized by the caste system, have expressed their resistance through literature, envisioning substantive equality and social change. In this thesis, I draw on digital humanities methods to examine regional variation in translated Dalit poetry from Bengali, Hindi/Urdu, Marathi, and Tamil languages. I utilize topic modeling—a machine learning algorithm that detects latent semantic structures in a text—as a point of departure for poetry analysis. I observe how topic modeling enables newer readings of the poems, revealing regionally resonant and broader Dalit themes.

At just 1.85 million, Latvia’s current population is declining at one of the fastest rates in Europe. This situation is prompting the Latvian government to introduce policies seeking economic, political, educational, and cultural engagement with the country’s diaspora with the hope that some of the approximately 390,000 emigrants and their descendants living abroad will return to live in Latvia. This paper asks whether these government initiatives are successful in their goal of influencing Latvian diaspora members to remigrate, and if the policies acknowledge and reconcile generational differences in the diaspora’s attitudes towards cultural involvement and eventual remigration. Urban agriculture (UA) frequently employs organic, polycultural and agroecological techniques in order to farm suboptimal urban land with limited resources. However, less scholarly attention has been paid to its actual impacts on the eating patterns of marginalized groups like immigrants, which is important to study for political debates about the expansion and purpose of UA. In this study, I examined how different forms of UA affect food security and dietary diversity for immigrants in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. While this Neoliberalized urban governance approach has met with resistance, the resistance ironically has also enabled the city to capitalize on its social-welfarist past. Background: Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) was the original mode of transplantation (e.g., first lung transplant in 1963 and first heart transplant in 1967) (1,2) but was largely abandoned post-1968 following the Harvard brain-death criteria (3). Recently, Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) has renewed interest in DCD by mitigating warm ischemic injury. However, Certified Clinical Perfusionists (CCPs), who manage the extracorporeal circuits essential for NRP, remain largely overlooked or underrepresented in protocols and literature, even though they are, according to the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), the only professionals “formally educated and trained in adult and pediatric extracorporeal technology” (4). …

I propose a model in which workers experience fatigue over time and can restore productivity by taking breaks. Optimal schedules feature evenly spaced, full-recovery breaks; when breaks are costless, they should occur frequently, but switching costs make the optimal number finite. The model is embedded in a principal-agent framework with contractual frictions. When employers control the schedule, workers overwork; when workers self-manage, they overrest. Both lead to inefficiencies. These results shed light on the trade-offs in remote work arrangements, especially following COVID-19. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is an inherited stress-induced arrhythmogenic disease often caused by point variants in the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2) that enhance diastolic sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ leak. These RyR2 variants cluster in three hot-spots (N-terminal, central and C-terminal domains). We previously demonstrated a pathologic diastolic RyR2 conformation in heart failure, oxidative stress and CaMKII phosphorylation exhibiting a trilogy of effects: (1) reduced calmodulin (CaM)-RyR2 affinity, (2) enhanced unzipping peptide (DPc10) binding and (3) elevated diastolic SR Ca2+ leak that are dantrolene-sensitive. Background/Objectives: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), characterized by chronic abdominal pain and significant disability, affect 15-20% of children and adults and continue into adulthood in ~60% of cases. Costs for adults reach USD 30 billion per year, yet effective management strategies are elusive. Studies support using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but abdominal pain only improves in ~40% of patients. Dietary management (low FODMAP diet; LFD) has also shown promise but it is effective in only a similar percentage of patients. Studies suggest that biologic factors (biomarkers) contribute to CBT response. Similarly, gut microbiome composition appears to influence abdominal pain …

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged but at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the “best of both worlds,” using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution—avoiding performance bottlenecks and semantically inequivalent results. The mitochondrial phosphate carrier (mPiC), encoded by the nuclear gene SLC25A3, is synthesized with an N-terminus mitochondrial targeting sequence (MTS), enabling its import into the mitochondria. mPiC imports inorganic phosphate (P_i) into the mitochondrial matrix for ATP production and other matrix phosphorylation reactions, as well as regulates mitochondrial Ca²⁺ uptake and buffering of matrix Ca²⁺. PiC also imports copper (Cu), crucial to COX subunit holoenzyme assembly. Variants in SLC25A3 exist and lead to mPiC deficiency (MPCD), cause a rare autosomal recessive disease with no current cure; patients with MPCD usually die within the first …

Underuse of healthcare services by Blacks, who receive fewer influenza vaccinations than Whites in New York, has resulted in elevated health complications and increased healthcare costs. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if there is an association between race and insurance status with length of inpatient stay and total charges. Theoretical frameworks were the Quality, Cost, and Health Model and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Triple Aim framework. Using a dataset from the New York State Planning and Research Cooperative System with a sample size of 3,137 cases, findings showed significant disparities during analysis. Regression analysis …

The following thesis examines how socioeconomic factors, specifically location, education, income, and social capital, affect access to and success within the dance industry in the United States. While talent is viewed as the primary driver of success in dance, this research reveals that structural inequities shape career opportunities and outcomes for dancers. The study was prompted by a lack of critical discourse around socioeconomic barriers in the field of dance.
