Liquid storage tanks (LSTs) are critical infrastructure components, storing essential fluids in facilities such as oil refineries and nuclear power plants. However, their vulnerability to seismic damage, including tank wall buckling and anchor uplift due to fluid-structure interaction and sloshing dynamics, necessitates advanced protective measures. This study introduces the Locally Resonant Frictional Metamaterial (LRFM) system as an innovative seismic base-isolation (SBI) technology to mitigate earthquake-induced effects on LSTs. The LRFM system consists of a periodic lattice framework with friction-based resonators designed to attenuate seismic waves by generating low-frequency bandgaps (0–20 Hz), which is a critical range for mitigating impulsive seismic …

This paper studies a single-resonator electromagnetic energy harvester that employs an impact-driven frequency up-conversion mechanism to convert low-frequency vibrations of a multi-span beam, subjected to successive moving loads, into electrical power. The harvester consists of a cantilever beam made of plastic, serving as the resonator, with a thick square copper coil attached to its free end. This coil moves relative to two stationary cubic neodymium permanent magnets, each positioned on one side of the coil. To expand the harvester’s operational bandwidth, a stopper is positioned beneath the resonator, inducing controlled mechanical impacts as the cantilever beam vibrates. These impacts effectively …

Information, Production Networks and Optimal Taxation: This paper studies optimal taxation in an economy with information frictions and a production network across industries. I show that when all industries share the same information structure, production efficiency holds and optimal policy features no taxes on intermediate goods. Deviating from this benchmark, I characterize the optimal policy when information structure is heterogeneous across industries: The government optimally imposes higher revenue taxes on industries during economic downturns if: (i) these industries exhibit greater information rigidity, (ii) their downstream industries display less information rigidity, and (iii) their input goods are also utilized by less …

Purpose

To improve patients’ perceptions of nurses by listening to their needs, helping nurses to engage with their patients therapeutically in the OBGYN/Postpartum/Mother-Baby unit. Aiming to increase patient satisfaction scores from 62.5% to 70% by December 2024 using the "Commit to Sit" method.

Background

The project was implemented in an OBGYN/Postpartum/Mother-Baby Unit, addressing the concerns of the patient’s perception of nurses not listening and addressing their needs which has contributed to a decline in patient satisfaction scores.

Methodology

The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model was used. Nurses were trained to sit at eye level with patients for 3–5 minutes per shift. Data …

The world of college athletics is changing rapidly and dramatically. Conferences are disintegrating and realigning. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the cutting of varsity sport programs at universities around the country. Student-athletes are signing multi- year name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals with major brands such as Gatorade, State Farm, and Nike that are worth millions of dollars. Yet with all of these changes, a college or university receiving federal funds remains obligated to abide by the anti-discrimination requirements of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, widely known as Title IX.

Included are the initial scripts and the final qualitative thematic codes (created using the grounded method) of two IRB studies completed by the BYU Library's Digital Collections Systems Management Committee. Background/Objectives: Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy poses risks to mothers and infants. This study aimed to correlate maternal iron indices in the second trimester with cord blood indices and pregnancy outcomes.

Methods: This prospective cohort study was nested within the RAPIDIRON Trial (Reducing Anaemia in Pregnancy in India) at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Karnataka, India. A total of 292 pregnant women with moderate anemia who received oral iron supplementation were enrolled from April 2021 to May 2023. Maternal iron indices were measured at multiple time points and correlated with cord blood indices and pregnancy outcomes.

Trump’s presidency created a heightened scrutiny of immigrants, specifically Latin American immigrants, as his initiative focused on building a wall on the Mexico-US border. Trump’s extreme xenophobic speech was disseminated by the media, influencing the public to perceive Latin American immigrants as dangerous individuals responsible for violent crime. This is despite Latin American immigrants committing crimes at lower rates than native-born citizens. Further, his presidency continued the American criminalization of immigration as he enacted punitive and discriminatory policies and legislation. This thesis examines how music contributed to the conversion of Nahuatl-speaking Indigenous peoples in sixteenth-century New Spain during the Spanish “spiritual conquest” that followed the fall of Tenochtitlan. Drawing on historical, anthropological, and psychological scholarship, as well as primary sources from the colonial period, the study compares pre-Columbian Nahua musical traditions with Franciscan missionary practices to explore why music proved to be an effective tool of religious instruction and persuasion. The research demonstrates that music occupied a central role in Nahua religious, educational, and social life prior to Spanish contact, making it a familiar and powerful medium through which missionaries …

This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the Art in Mind program at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in St. Petersburg, Florida, a therapeutic arts initiative designed for individuals with cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer’s disease, and their caregivers. Drawing inspiration from the Meet Me at MoMA model, the program uses guided art discussions, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), and Personal Response Strategies (PRS) to promote social engagement, emotional well-being, and meaningful connections through art. Association constant (Ka) measurements provide fundamental information on host–guest interactions in supramolecular chemistry and other areas of science. Here we report the use of in situ FTIR spectroscopy to measure the Ka values across three classes of host–guest complexes that involve hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding. This approach can be performed with minimal sample preparation, does not require deuterated solvents, can measure association based on changes in host or guest vibrations, and benefits from a much shorter timescale than NMR spectroscopy. Due to its fast timescale, FTIR spectroscopy also provides details on host/guest conformational changes, such as the presence of …

This workshop presentation, "Empowering Guideline Searching with Guidelines Resources," provides a comprehensive overview of major resources and effective strategies for locating clinical practice guidelines. The session introduces key platforms-including ECRI Guidelines Trust, Guideline Central, PubMed, and CINAHL-and demonstrates how to leverage professional society websites and Google search techniques to access authoritative, evidence-based guidelines. Attendees learn to compare resource features, apply advanced search filters, and ensure access to the most current recommendations for clinical decision-making. The Affine Zariski-Nagata theorem is a classical result in commutative algebra that gives an expression for the n^th symbolic power of a radical ideal I in a polynomial ring over a field in terms of the n^th ordinary powers of the maximal ideals in [affine variety]_max(I). In this thesis we discuss a well-known projective analog of Zariski-Nagata and provide the necessary background on toric varieties to present a generalization of this result to toric surfaces. This manuscript describes a novel unconventional secretory pathway that facilitates EGF receptor (EGFR) signaling from apical membranes in polarized epithelial cells responding to immune cell mediators. Epithelial tissues provide a physical barrier between our bodies and the external environment and share an intimate relationship with circulating and local immune cells. Our studies describe an unexpected connection between the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and EGFR typically localized to basolateral membranes in polarized epithelial cells. Fréchet regression is becoming a mainstay in modern data analysis for analysing non-traditional data types belonging to general metric spaces. This novel regression method is especially useful in the analysis of complex health data such as continuous monitoring and imaging data. Fréchet regression utilises the pairwise distances between the random objects, which makes the choice of metric crucial in the estimation. In this paper, existing dimension reduction methods for Fréchet regression are reviewed, and the effect of metric choice on the estimation of the dimension reduction subspace is explored for the regression between random responses and Euclidean predictors. In recent decades, the environmental detection of various organic compounds (OCs) has highlighted the limitations of conventional soil-water sorption models, which simplify complex experimental conditions and often overlook OCs with polyfunctional and ionizable structures. To address these shortcomings, we compiled a comprehensive soil-water sorption dataset encompassing 20,945 data points for 419 OCs with various functional groups and 1037 different soils. Meta-analysis of the dataset revealed the trends of soil sorption associated with OC substructures, soil properties, and solution conditions. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of all types of glaucoma in Latin America (LATAM) and evaluate potential demographic associations. This study followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024506330). A comprehensive search of PubMed, SciELO, and Web of Science was conducted to identify population-based or cross-sectional studies reporting glaucoma prevalence in LATAM. Studies were categorized into two groups: Group 1 included general population studies without selection based on visual acuity (VA), and Group 2 included studies limited to individuals with VA < 20/60. Data from five studies in Group 1 (25,288 individuals) and eight studies in Group 2 (29,882 individuals) were analyzed using R software. The pooled prevalence of glaucoma was 4% (95% CI: 1–3%) in Group 1 and 1% (95% CI: 0–1%) in Group 2. No statistically significant associations were found between glaucoma prevalence and sex (p = 0.08) or age (p = 0.5669). Although our findings …

Quantum information science and technology (QIST) combines principles of quantum mechanics and information theory to develop new approaches for processing, transmitting, and sensing information. Practical realization of applications in QIST requires generation and validation of a significant amount of entanglement, which is not only a property but a logical resource. Silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are an attractive platform for applications in QIST and for generating the entanglement resource because they are foundry-fabricated, are compatible with existing fiber optic infrastructure, have a small spatial footprint, and afford access to several high-dimensional (HD) degrees of freedom. Bottom-up protein mass spectrometry aims for the identification and quantification of protein species by proxy of their proteolytic peptides. This dissertation presents methodological advances in three areas of protein mass spectrometry: acquisition methods, clinical appli- cations, and data analysis algorithms. The second chapter presents an optimized internal standard-triggered parallel reaction monitoring (OIS-PRM) method and demonstrates its application to study prognostic biomarkers in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HN- SCC). OIS-PRM uses intelligent scan scheduling and real-time monitoring of peptide elution profiles to reduce cycle-times and improve quantitative precision and accuracy. Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor driven by the interplay between tumor cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic heterogeneity, enabling rapid evolution. To investigate how canonical GBM mutations promote functional plasticity, we developed an isogenic human neural stem cell (NSC) model of GBM by sequential addition of TERT promoter, TP53, and PDGFRA point mutations. TP53 loss-of-function increased TERT expression during serial mutagenesis, but only triple mutant NSCs reliably formed lethal brain tumors in vivo that recapitulate GBM. Tumor cell evolution triggered stress-related metabolic changes and transitioned toward a neuronal progenitor network driven by transcription factor INSM1. INSM1 is highly expressed in human …

Alphaviruses are enveloped, mosquito-transmitted, positive-sense RNA viruses of the Togaviridae family classified into Old and New World groups based on endemic regions and human disease characteristics. Old World alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus preferentially cause arthritogenic disease, whereas New World viruses like Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), and Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) can cause neurological disease. Since the 1920s, VEEV has been responsible for major periodic outbreaks affecting hundreds of thousands of humans and equines in South and Central America.
