Afflicted Epistemology: Knowledge, Illness, And New Media After “Truth”, Annika Nilsson May 2025

Afflicted Epistemology: Knowledge, Illness, And New Media After “Truth”, Annika Nilsson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how people living with complex, medically underdetermined chronic illnesses make sense of their experiences through self-experimentation mediated by online forums and self-help groups in a cultural context characterized by significant controversy surrounding the status of science, expertise, and conventionally authoritative knowledge-producing institutions. Using virtual and conventional ethnography and critical media studies methods, it finds that the fragmentary and decentralized nature of the U.S. healthcare system intensified the interpretive challenges associated with complex chronic illnesses: information was extremely abundant, but deciphering its accuracy, reliability, and relevance proved difficult. In this context, participants relied on experiential knowledge to filter, …

The Role Of Il-33 In Itch, Anna M. Trier May 2025

The Role Of Il-33 In Itch, Anna M. Trier

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chronic itch is associated with a broad range of medical conditions, from inflammatory skin diseases to cancer and organ dysfunction, and has a lifetime prevalence of up to 20%. Despite being common and debilitating, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive chronic itch are just beginning to be elucidated. Thus, therapeutic options are limited. Recent studies have identified that various pro-inflammatory cytokines can directly activate sensory neurons. This has resulted in mounting interest in the therapeutic potential of inhibiting these neuro-immune interactions. IL-33 is constitutively expressed by epithelial cells, which allows for its rapid release upon tissue damage or stress. …

Dissertations

This dissertation presents findings of a self-study that investigated how student input, through reality pedagogy, may inform 3D phenomena-based teaching practices. 3D phenomena-based teaching practices are not new, but teachers are trying to determine how to use this framework to meet the needs of all students. 3D phenomena-based lessons use phenomena to drive instruction using core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. The goal of using 3D phenomena-based teaching practices is to create 21st century critical thinkers and problem-solvers who engage in scientific habits. The acquisition of student perceptions through the analysis of student interviews, reflective journal …

Flying Safe: Reducing Bird Strikes At Northern Illinois University, Stacey Marcinkowski May 2025

Flying Safe: Reducing Bird Strikes At Northern Illinois University, Stacey Marcinkowski

Honors Capstones

Bird-window collisions are a major source of avian mortality, particularly in urban environments where glass structures are prevalent. At Northern Illinois University (NIU), systematic monitoring conducted between 2019 and 2024 revealed Montgomery Hall to be the building with the highest incidence of bird strikes. This project aimed to test the effectiveness of a cost efficient bird strike mitigation strategy using grease marker frit dots on Montgomery Hall’s skybridge windows. We applied white dots spaced four inches apart and compared strike data collected during fall migration seasons before (2018–2022) and after (2024) dot application. While limited to one post-treatment season, results …

Acetaminophen’S Contribution To Autism And Adhd From A Mitochondrial Perspective, Stephanie G. Chu May 2025

Acetaminophen’S Contribution To Autism And Adhd From A Mitochondrial Perspective, Stephanie G. Chu

Senior Honors Theses

The CDC reported that one in 36 children were identified with autism in 2020, a 22% increase from 2018 and a 98% increase from 2010. Simultaneously, ADHD diagnoses increased 36% from 2003 to 2016-2019. Despite this surge, their etiologies remain largely unknown. However, numerous studies document higher incidences of mitochondrial abnormalities in affected individuals. Additionally, acetaminophen has been implicated in these disorders in longitudinal studies and murine models. This paper is a compilation of literature aiming to present a novel theoretical framework for acetaminophen-induced mitochondrial damage in utero. It focuses on a toxic metabolite of acetaminophen, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine, and its …

Rose Craig Art399 Portfolio, Rose M. Craig

Professional Practices (ART 399)

My work often explores personal narratives related to family and childhood, using line, shape, form, and value in a representational style. Heirloom, a cylindrical nickel box with a symmetrical design of organic and geometric shapes, reminiscent of 1930s pill boxes, featuring a mother-of-pearl. Inside the box is a small brass pillbox hat. I chose to create a design and a hat that calls back to the word pill to not only symbolize heirlooms but also how mental illness can be passed down generationally. The mother of pearl symbolizes my family’s traditions of passing down heirlooms from mother to daughter.

On September 11, 2023, Storm Daniel unleashed unprecedented rainfall over the Wadi Derna watershed, triggering one of the most devastating floods in modern history, striking Derna, a coastal city in Libya. This study reconstructs the disaster using an integrated modeling approach that combines satellite imagery, hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical simulations, machine learning, eyewitness accounts, and digital elevation data to assess the impact of cascading dam failures. Our findings reveal that the region’s dams, even if structurally sound, would have provided minimal protection against the extreme runoff. However, their failure unleashed a destructive surge wave, amplifying the disaster’s magnitude and devastation. …

The Missing Connection: Designing A New Transit Hub Typology Centered Around Community, Michael Rixom May 2025

The Missing Connection: Designing A New Transit Hub Typology Centered Around Community, Michael Rixom

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

To effectively develop cities and improve the quality of life for their citizens, urban transportation infrastructure must evolve beyond its current function as a mere conduit for movement. Transportation hubs, such as MARTA stations, are essential in connecting people to their jobs, homes, and recreational spaces, serving as critical nodes within the urban fabric. However, despite their importance, they are designed with a sole focus on efficiency and movement, and often neglect the potential of these spaces to serve as more dynamic, community-centered environments.

In this Thesis Placemaking will be defined as an approach to urban design that emphasizes the …

Disrupting Monotony, Elias Mendez May 2025

Disrupting Monotony, Elias Mendez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

At the start of this project, I was confronted with a range of global issues that revealed the harsh realities many regions face in securing basic human needs, particularly shelter. One issue that stood out to me was the housing crisis in Mexico, where low-income families often struggle to afford homes while also meeting essential needs like food and clothing. Many of these homes are poorly constructed due to strict budget constraints and are built in such close proximity that both private and communal spaces are sacrificed in favor of maximizing land use. This often results in rows of identical …

In Light Of Design: The Architecture Of Ambiance, Dariusch Hakimi Gilani May 2025

In Light Of Design: The Architecture Of Ambiance, Dariusch Hakimi Gilani

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Architectural education often emphasizes technical proficiency and efficiency over the development of sensory and emotional experience, despite the profound impact atmosphere has on the built environment. Architecture schools claim to prepare students for a broad range of creative careers, yet direct education in atmospheric design is frequently relegated to adjacent disciplines like interior design, production design, or themed entertainment design. This disconnect raises a critical question: Can architectural education teach technical engineering skill and atmospheric sensitivity simultaneously, without compromising either? Given the crucial role of atmosphere in shaping human experience within spaces, it is essential to integrate its study into …

Plastic Repurposed: Explorations For The Use Of Plastic Waste As An Architectural Element, Caleb Tinajero May 2025

Plastic Repurposed: Explorations For The Use Of Plastic Waste As An Architectural Element, Caleb Tinajero

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The business model for plastic has become accustomed to a system of consumption and disposal that has failed to develop a way that benefits the environment. Unless the production of plastic ceases to persist, the number of plastic waste will continue to grow and even though it is not fully visible, the effects of this pollution will eventually contaminate the aspects of our lives. Although stopping the production of such a vital factor to the prosperity of the economy is unrealistic, it could also be detrimental to the machinations of society. It is after all a very useful resource. The …

Urban Eden, Establishing The Groundwork For A More Resilient City, Max R. Oliva May 2025

Urban Eden, Establishing The Groundwork For A More Resilient City, Max R. Oliva

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Cities account for over 70% of Global C02 emissions and as these areas grow over time their Carbon Footprint will grow in turn. In order to offset this imbalance I propose to design Performative Skins & Building Modules to not only reduce the carbon footprint in these cities, but also recover their connection to Nature contributing not only to energy efficiency and air quality, but also to urban aesthetics, the inclusion of these systems could go so far as to help mitigate the heat island effect and in the long term help establish a more resilient and sustainable city

Empow{Her}: Architecture As A Tool For Healing, Dignity, And Collective Power In Underserved Communities, Miciah Norman May 2025

Empow{Her}: Architecture As A Tool For Healing, Dignity, And Collective Power In Underserved Communities, Miciah Norman

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis investigates the role of architecture as a catalyst for empowerment, healing, and social transformation within underserved communities, with a specific focus on the lived experiences of Black women. Empow(her) centers Black women as co-victims — individuals who are often forced to carry the emotional and economic weight of losing loved ones to gun violence, a crisis perpetuated by systemic neglect and ineffective gun legislation. These women, frequently overlooked in policy and design conversations, navigate generational trauma in environments that fail to support their healing or acknowledge their pain. Through the lens of feminist, trauma-informed, and justice-oriented design, this …

Defining Space With Bamboo, Nicholas A. Stile Jr. May 2025

Defining Space With Bamboo, Nicholas A. Stile Jr.

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Defining Space with Bamboo explores the architectural potential of bamboo in the subtropical climate of the United States—specifically challenging the preconception of bamboo as merely an invasive species. While it’s true that bamboo is non-native and fast-spreading, its presence is already well-established across the region. This project asks: rather than resisting it, what if we embraced bamboo as a rapidly renewable, structurally versatile construction material?

Set along the Atlanta BeltLine, the project comprises three spatial installations—small, medium, and large—each designed to examine how bamboo can actively define space through qualities of leisure, activity, and discovery. The small pavilion employs a …

Rare Earth Mineral Flotation – A Comparison Of Silicates To Oxides, Carbonates And Phosphates, Abdul Mamudu

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Flotation is a processing method used to separate valuable minerals from gangue minerals based on differences in hydrophobicity. When applied to ores bearing rare earth minerals (REMs) variations in rare earth element (REE) concentrations within the REMs can lead to inconsistent flotation results. Prior work at Montana Technological University examined the adsorption of collectors on the surfaces of synthetic REMs to assess recovery via flotation. Previous studies showed that the results obtained for Salicyl Hydroxamic Acid (SHA) on rare earth oxides REO), rare earth carbonates (REC), and rare earth phosphates (REP) vary depending on the coordination number (CN) and the …

Single and multiple shooting techniques are described along with a pseudo arc-length continuation method for preliminary orbit design. Periodic orbits in the vicinity of L4 are obtained in the context of the Earth-Moon circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) and the Sun-Earth-Moon bi-circular restricted four-body problem …

Satellite Reorientation Using Reinforcement Learning Under Unknown Attitude Failure, Matthew Willoughby May 2025

Satellite Reorientation Using Reinforcement Learning Under Unknown Attitude Failure, Matthew Willoughby

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This study presents a reinforcement learning (RL) approach for reestablishing communication with deep-space satellites under unknown attitude determination and control system (ADCS) failures. When traditional fault-tolerant control methods cannot restore signal, the proposed RL controller acts as a last-resort measure by autonomously reorienting the satellite’s antenna toward Earth while charging the battery via solar panels. A generic reward function, designed for the RL-based method, enables the controller to adapt to diverse failure scenarios, including severe actuator noise, misalignment, and complete actuator failure. Simulations are conducted in the Basilisk environment and trained with the tonic framework and demonstrate ranging capabilities of …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Recently, I have begun exploring color as an emotional language—one that can communicate the complex and often contradictory aspects of the human experience. Color is not merely a visual tool; it is a deeply emotional medium that conveys the subtle tensions, contrasts, and harmonies inherent in the process of self-discovery. Through photography, I delve into the concept of self-duality, the coexistence of seemingly opposing forces within us, and how these forces shape our understanding of who we are. Within some of my portraits, I explore the tension between organic and geometric forms. By applying contrasting values—highlights, shadows, and tonal ranges—to …
