In my exploration of architectural criticism, I have focused on how social institutions and their architectures have failed to address the global health issue of microplastics. My building, located in the Great Pacific Gyre – the site of the largest collection of plastics and microplastics on the planet – is a reflection and a critique of these institutions’ effectiveness, as the typical architecture for these climate action talks (read: sites of global summits and accords) often operate far from the problems they aim to solve and are constrained by the geopolitical regulations of the nation-state.

Crustaceans, insects, and microscopic organisms all have exoskeletons in nature. With a focus on crabs, other crustaceans and bugs, this study examines and evaluates the formal characteristics of chitin-based organisms. On August 14, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) health advisory due to a surge in Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections in the United States. Our report presents two cases of suspected donor-derived Parvovirus B19 infection in kidney transplant patients. Both cases had refractory anemia requiring treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. These cases highlight the importance of awareness and monitoring of B19V infection in the context of recent epidemiologic trends to improve clinical outcomes in kidney transplant recipients.

Meta-Kaolinite Metal Oxide Quaternary Composite For Layered Double Hydroxide Applied To A New Frontier In Adsorption Technology: Synthesis, Adsorption Performance And Kinetics Study, Samar A. Salim

This study explores the synthesis and characterization of a quaternary composite based on meta-kaolinite and metal oxides (MgO, Al2O3, and Fe2O3) for the formation of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), aimed to the efficient removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater. The composite was synthesized using a co-precipitation method (Mg:Al:Fe molar ratio = 3:1:1) and thermally activated at 400 ◦C to enhance porosity and active site availability. Instrumental characterization through XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and BET analyses confirmed the effective combination of metal oxides into the meta-kaolinite matrix, with BET results revealing a surface area of 540 m2/g (vs. 190 m2/g for raw …

This thesis critically examines Félix Régamey’s transformative role in the development of Japonisme, highlighting his pivotal contribution to bridging Western perceptions and authentic Japanese culture during the late nineteenth century. Through an exploration of his firsthand experiences in Japan, Régamey emerges as a multifaceted and paradoxical figure—an artist, educator, and author—whose pursuits reshaped the narrative of Japanese art and cultural exchange in France amid the fervor of Japonisme. His immersion in Japanese society enabled him to engage directly with its artistic traditions, which he skillfully translated for European audiences. Background: Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common chronic liver disorder in the world. Most patients with MASLD are undiagnosed, untreated and unreferred. Treatment depends on diagnosis and accurate staging of fibrosis risk, and therefore screening at the primary care setting coupled with consistent, timely, evidence-based, widely accessible, and testable management processes is critical. Randomized controlled trials of methods for screening, diagnosis, severity stratification, and referral are lacking. Purpose: This scholarly project aimed to develop modified criteria for oncology patients regarding Foley catheter removal guidance and implement a nurse initiative in the ICU to reduce CAUTI and catheter days.

Background: CAUTIs are considered preventable nosocomial infections; hence, a nurse-driven Foley catheter removal protocol has become an essential strategy in healthcare to reduce CAUTIs. The project was implemented in a 43-bed ICU in an academic hospital at the Texas Medical Center. The 12-week pilot project included adult patients with a primary diagnosis of cancer.

This quality improvement project implemented a standardized pain assessment tool, the Multidimensional Observational Pain Assessment Tool (MOPAT), to drive opioid administration for end-of-life (EOL) patients. This project intended to increase opioid administration to EOL patients through increased confidence levels noted in bedside staff with the use of a standardized pain assessment tool.

Background

The project was implemented in a thirty-two-bed adult medical intensive care unit in Round Rock, Texas. The patients focused on in this project were those transitioned to EOL care.

This study analyses the mixed evidence surrounding the impact of ICT adoption on tax revenue in Tanzania, focusing on ICT investments, ICT imports, internet usage, and broadband penetration. Drawing on the Technology Organization Environment (TOE) framework and Production Theory, the study adopts a positivist philosophy and deductive approach, using 25 years of time-series data. Employing Regressions, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) modeling, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), it investigates long-term effects, mediation, and moderation. The findings reveal that ICT investments, ICT imports, and broadband penetration positively influence tax revenue over the long term, while internet usage has a negative effect. Economic …

Purpose: Adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) significantly diminishes recurrence and mortality risks in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (BCa) patients. Nonetheless, suboptimal adherence and premature discontinuation during the initial year of treatment undermine these positive outcomes. This study aims to understand the potential diverse factors associated with perceived barriers to AET compliance at the onset of medication. Methods: We assessed perceived barriers to AET using the ASK-20 instrument for BCa patients initiating AET within 3 months. Objective. Brain-controlled functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the upper limb has been used to restore arm function to paralyzed individuals in the lab. Able-bodied individuals naturally modulate limb stiffness throughout movements and in anticipation of perturbations. Our goal is to develop, via simulation, a framework for incorporating stiffness modulation into the currently-used ‘lookup-table-based’ FES control systems while addressing several practical issues: (1) optimizing stimulation across muscles with overlap in function, (2) coordinating stimulation across joints, and (3) minimizing errors due to fatigue.
