The project transforms and renews a polluted EPA Superfund site in Pasadena, Texas into a center for ecological research and climate simulation. The thesis of this paper investigates the transformation of the David Adler Estate from its creation in 1864 to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The way our communities’ function is based in local histories, yet many individuals fail to see the importance of it. Through research focused on census data, newspapers, and oral histories, a clear timeline was formed in how the David Adler Estate was utilized. By examining the estate’s progression through agricultural, architectural, and artistic phases, this paper shows how a single house can reflect the growth of a region. Symmetry Induced Pairing In Dark Excitonic Condensate At Finite Temperature, Adham Alkady, Anatoly Kuklov

Bose Einstein condensate of dark intervalley excitons must be inherently multi-component because of crystalline symmetries. Since valleys hosting such excitons are separated by large quasi-momenta, a minimal inter-component Josephson-type coupling can only be established between pairs of excitons from the time-reversed valleys. As a result, a paired condensate can emerge at finite temperature, that is, the off-diagonal order exists for the pairs from the time-reversed valleys, while the individual valleys are disordered. This prediction follows from the elementary mean field analysis regardless of the dimensionality. However, as Monte Carlo simulations show, no such a phase exists in 3D crystals. Instead, …

In what is now Humboldt County and southern Klamath County, seven Indian tribes made their home: the Mawenok, Whilkut, Tsnungwe, Hupa, Karuk, Yurok, and Wiyot. They arrayed themselves upon the land and sent their roots down into the earth, so that they had become as one with the place. Their villages were of long standing, and even their individual houses could sometimes be traced back, by name, for hundreds of years. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia exhibit different pause duration and frequency patterns compared to individuals without neurological disorders, as well as to explore how speech task type influences pause patterns. A total of 16 participants (eight male and eight female) previously diagnosed with moderate Broca's aphasia and apraxia were included in this study, along with 16 age- and gender-matched control participants. Speech recordings from the 16 participants were sourced from the AphasiaBank database. Speech samples from four different task types (i.e., interview, personal narrative, picture description, and story retell) were analyzed …

The Metals Recovery Assessment (MRA) protocol involves collecting and evaluating information to assess the possibility for recovery of critical or rare earth minerals at mine sites to offset remediation or redevelopment costs associated with land reuse at Superfund or closed mine sites. This study aimed to advance the understanding of ResonantAcoustic® Mixing (RAM) and its application in industrial powder processing. RAM, which consists of vertically oscillating boundaries operating at nominally 60 Hz with accelerations up to 100 g’s, is particularly effective for mixing fine powders and materials. RAM is able to complete mixing processes 10 to 100 times faster than traditional methods without the risk of cross contamination. Despite RAM’s growing potential, the underlying mechanisms of RAM are not fully understood, limiting its optimization and broader adoption. This mixed methods action research study aimed to determine what kindergarten students do when literacy-based materials are integrated into pre-existing play centers. Additionally, the researchers wanted to discover student and teacher perceptions of literacy-based materials used to enhance play in the classroom. To do this, a pre- and post-survey was given to student participants and field notes were taken daily during center time. A pre- and post-focus group was facilitated with student participants, and a pre- and post-interview was facilitated with the teacher participant. The data collected over four weeks was analyzed using the constant comparative method. Researchers found that …

In recent decades, pretrial detention has been a key contributor to Brazil’s mass incarceration. This is true, despite domestic and international norms limiting pretrial detention to exceptional circumstances and mounting evidence linking it to worse outcomes for arrestees in their criminal proceedings and post-release life prospects. As a longitudinal multivariate pretrial research in Brazil, this Article investigates the key mechanisms and factors that explain pretrial detention in relation to inter-American human rights standards. The concept of a sociedad in Latin America has undergone profound changes throughout this century. Following the example set by the French Code de commerce of 1807, the sociedad was initially viewed as a contractual arrangement between two or more partners who make contributions to a business for purposes of sharing in the resulting profit or loss, wherein a plurality of partners was an intrinsic component. Nonetheless, the notion of a sociedad has evolved to entail the establishment of a separate legal entity, making the plurality of partners requirement increasingly obsolete for its formation and/or operation.

As Jair Bolsonaro rose to popularity and was elected the 38th president of Brazil in 2018, the global community grew concerned over his very public disdain for the country’s democratic institutions and admiration for Brazil’s 22-year-long military dictatorship.
