This article highlights the scientific achievements and professional career of William M. Pardridge, who passed away on 18th of June 2024. He was born in 1947 in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. William, known affectionately as Bill, was one of the most influential researchers in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) field. This report uses geographic data to identify development predictors and assemble site-ranking scorecards for deck park development. Deck parks are an increasingly popular, if understudied, urban intervention often used to mitigate the effects of highway development, pedestrianized urban areas, and promote development. This research collected data from 19 parks across the United States using the American Community Survey and observed Geospatial Features to develop predictors that relate to deck park implementation measured in $/ft^2. Architecture has long grappled with questions of self, community, and cultural identity. While the number of Black architects is growing, architecture that genuinely reflects Black identity remains rare. This lack of representation has contributed to a sense of invisibility for Black communities within the built environment—whether by design or neglect. There is an urgent need to define and celebrate Blackness and Black space in ways that reflect the cultural richness of Black communities. West Plains PFAS Fate + Transport Study

Radiocarbon dating of groundwater in the West Plains has focused on the basaltic aquifers, since these are the most commonly used for drinking water wells. These aquifers include the Grande Ronde and Wanapum flood basalts from the Columbia RIver Basalt Group (Miocene). However, looking at the West Plains holistically, there is a need for recharge for these, which may include water in basement rocks (Eocene to Cretaceous granite and Cambrian to Mesoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks). Additionally residents in the area have wells within the basement rock aquifers that tend to dry up during years with low precipitation. Groundwater interactions between basement …

West Plains PFAS Fate + Transport Study

Groundwater samples collected in the West Plains, Spokane County by the EPA and EWU were analyzed for PFAS using EPA Method 533. An attempt was made to gather well depths and well logs from the wells sampled, but not all residences had a Water Well Report as many wells pre-date this regulation. Using PFAS results and well depths/aquifers concentration maps were made of the West Plains to show distribution of PFOS and PFHxS to see possible extents of contamination associated with high-temperature firefighting foam (AFFF) as well as PFOA, PFBS, and the PFAS Hazard Index (HI) for contamination associated with …

Characterizing imaging performance requires a multidisciplinary approach that evaluates various interconnected parameters, including dosage optimization and dynamic accuracy. Radiation dose and dynamic accuracy are challenged by patient motion that results in poor image quality. These challenges are more prevalent in the brain/cardiac pediatric patient imaging, as they relate to excess radiation dose that may be associated with various complications. Scanning vulnerable pediatric patients ought to eliminate anesthesia due to critical risks associated in some cases with intracranial hemorrhages, brain strokes, and congenital heart disease. Some pediatric imaging, however, requires prolonged scanning under anesthesia. It can often be a laborious, suboptimal …

Amyloid beta (Aβ42 and Aβ40) aggregation, along with neurofibrillary tangles, is one of the major neurotoxic events responsible for the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Many potent peptide-based inhibitors mainly focusing on central hydrophobic core Aβ16-20 (KLVFF) have been reported in recent years. Herein, we report pentapeptides -, based on the β-turn-inducing fragment Aβ19-23 (FFAED). The synthesis of peptides - was carried out using Fmoc/tBu-based solid-phase peptide synthesis technique, and it was found that pentapeptide potently inhibit the aggregation propensity of Aβ42, when incubated with it at 37 °C for 48 h. Research on the relationship between resistin levels, metabolic health, and obesity has produced inconsistent findings across different ethnic groups, making it unclear whether lower resistin levels are associated with these conditions in Mexican-Americans. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between resistin, metabolic health, and obesity in an adult Mexican-American cohort (n = 1511) using multivariable linear regression analysis. Related adipokines (leptin and adiponectin) were measured simultaneously. Participants were categorized into four groups by metabolic health (healthy/unhealthy) and obesity (obese/non-obese) status. “Metabolically unhealthy” was defined as ≥2 cardiometabolic abnormalities. Obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. We also …

Beyond Barcodes is a conceptual zine that investigates the narratives encoded within barcodes and reinterprets receipts as tools to examine the emotional layers of consumer behavior. Often dismissed as transactional byproducts, receipts in this project are reframed as carriers of memory, identity and self-worth—reflecting personal values shaped by frugality, guilt, and inherited beliefs about money. Pain relief is the most frequently reported motivation for opioid misuse, but it remains unclear how pain alters reward pathway function contributing to maladaptive opioid use and whether these neuroadaptations occur in a sex-specific manner. Here, we show that persistent inflammatory pain leads to augmented fentanyl self-administration in male, not female, rats. Hyperspectral target detection applies algorithms to high-dimensional images to identify rare targets, or objects of interest, within cluttered scenes of diverse backgrounds. Computational demands of processing hyperspectral datasets, along with their limited availability in both public and private sectors, imposes challenges in assessing system-level limitations of detection. This research presents a methodology to quantify end-to-end sensitivities and limitations through statistical modeling across thousands of target detection scenarios. The objective is to identify specific parametric thresholds where detection begins to degrade, based on “knees” in detection curves derived from model outputs of various scenarios.
