Freshwater ecosystems in East Texas contain a rich freshwater biodiversity, with the Neches and Sabine River basins supporting some of the greatest freshwater fish diversity in the state. Given the heterogeneity of habitats and species diversity, these rivers serve as excellent natural systems for examining the ecological processes shaping biodiversity patterns and species distributions. In 2023-2024, 60 streams in the Neches and Sabine River basins were surveyed across three seasons to investigate the patterns and ecological drivers of taxonomic (TDβ), functional (FDβ), and phylogenetic β-diversity (PDβ) facets of freshwater fish assemblages. Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is a portion of the three-circle model of agriculture education, providing experiential learning opportunities for students. The immersion SAE encourages students to build upon foundational learning components in a real-world application. A popular area of the immersion SAE includes ownership of market swine being raised for exhibition. This study serves as a pilot mentorship program for agricultural science educators and students, creating an educational resource encouraging record-keeping techniques and skill development, leading to eventual independence from the student’s standpoint. Taxonomic identification of closely related plants can be challenging due to convergent evolution, hybridization, and overlapping geographic distribution. To derive taxonomic relationships among planted and wild plants across a large geographic range, we complemented three standard plastid barcodes , , and with soil and fruit chemistry, soil microbiome, and plant morphology analyses. Soil and plant sampling included planted from manicured sites in Southern California, USA, wild plants from Southern and Northern California, and wild populations from Mediterranean island of Hvar, Croatia. Through multiple experiments, Polyethylene Glycol Diacrylate (PEGDA), a biocompatible polymer, has shown potential as a soilless growing medium for microgreens like arugula. However, a challenge arises when the roots run out of space within the hydrogel capsule, pushing the plant out of position and preventing it from absorbing nutrients from the PEGDA.

This study aims to address this challenge by analyzing different 3D-printed mold designs for the creation of the hydrogel capsules. The most promising designs include coil and tree-branch models, which encourage roots to grow in a way that relieves pressure on the leaf side of the plant, helping …

Disparities In Exposure To Atmospheric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) And Their Contributions To Breast Cancer Risks Among African American Women, Namuun Batbaatar

Exposure to atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a ubiquitous public health risk and is often disproportionately high in disadvantaged communities. Understanding is still limited regarding the sources, disparities, and health effects of PAH exposures. This dissertation consists of three studies that address these knowledge gaps. The first study aimed to quantify the contributions of multiple exposure pathways to PAH-related cancer risks. Concentrations of PAHs in soil and air were measured in Memphis, TN, from 2016 to 2019. The cumulative cancer risk was 0.423×10-6 among children, with 75% from ingestion. For adults, the risk was 0.546×10-6, predominantly from dermal contact …

Three essays are included in this dissertation. In the first one, I investigate whether auditors show their leniency to companies during the COVID-19 pandemic by examining their reporting of going concern opinions (GCOs). The pandemic triggers significant global economic and financial uncertainty. Auditors are responsible for evaluating whether a company can sustain its operations in the foreseeable future as a going concern, particularly during challenging situations. Using a sample of 10,548 firm-year observations, ranging from 2017 to 2022, this study tests the association between GCO and the pandemic period. Ad Valorem Vita is an orchestral work in four movements. My aim for this work was to capture four separate moments in the life of a person in power with diabolical intentions. In this composition, the listener will find agony, despair, fear, rage, depression, and a myriad of other imbued emotions. Each movement is impressed with a feeling of a world gone wrong. The classic social contract theorized by Hobbes, Rousseau, and Locke advocates for establishing the state based on individual freedom; for them, a contractual agreement rather than nature serves as the foundation for the state. In his Philosophy of Rights, Hegel rejects this classic view of the social contract, which sees freedom and consent as the basis of the state. While the perspectives of the classic social contract and Hegel yield differing interpretations of freedom, the dissertation explores their relationship against contemporary challenges to freedom. Advanced Care Planning (ACP) is a process used to identify or update a specific patient’s preferences of care and treatment in the event that they lack the capacity to do so. ACP is especially important for the aging population and those living with chronic conditions. Currently 11% of the world’s population is above the age of 60 and this number is projected to climb to 22% by 2050. The effects of aging are even greater in rural areas, such as South Dakota, where there is a disproportionate number of older and sicker people.

Recent legislation in Illinois schools has focused on enhancing cardiac preparation in schools by establishing written emergency plans that are to be disseminated to employees within thirty days from the start of the school year. This web-based education tool was created as a centralized hub for employees to locate pertinent information regarding cardiac emergencies. The intent is to increase cardiac emergency preparedness in schools with access to evidence-based resources and content. This data analysis examined associations between cardiovascular and muscular fitness indicators and the presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older adult athletes. Using cross-sectional data from 1,110 participants aged 50 and older who completed the Sustained Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE) at state-level Senior Games events, we evaluated both objective performance metrics and self-reported exercise behaviors. Cardiovascular measures included systolic blood pressure (SBP), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index (BMI). Patients with visible skin diseases, including acne, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, face heightened risks of psychological distress, depression, and suicidal ideation, often exacerbated by social stigma and reduced quality of life. This review explores the intersection between dermatology and suicide, highlighting the psychosocial impact of visible skin conditions and the controversies surrounding treatment-related risks, including isotretinoin and biologic exposure. Current evidence suggests that while isotretinoin has been historically linked to mood changes, robust studies do not support a direct association with suicide. Incorporating mental health screenings into dermatological practice is essential for early identification and management of at-risk patients. By …

This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-and-a-half hour training session for master's students in counselor education. The training focused on using mindfulness to enhance spiritual and religious counseling competencies. Utilizing a pre-and post-test design, the quantitative study employed mindfulness to train master's students with the aim of building and fostering spiritual and religious competencies in counseling. Purpose/Hypothesis: Recumbent steppers are commonly used for improving cardiovascular and muscular endurance in neurological populations. Prior research has shown that using specific verbal cues and a foot strap can significantly alter lower extremity muscle activity and recruitment in healthy individuals during recumbent stepping. The purpose of this case series was to measure lower extremity muscle activity during recumbent stepping under a variety of stepping conditions in persons with multiple sclerosis.

Purpose: The biomechanical properties of muscles and tendons are important in rehabilitation and sport performance but are not routinely assessed. Recently, the MyotonPro device has been used in the assessment of a specific aspect of soft tissue stiffness, the resistance in deformation to an external force, at the Achilles tendon. Interestingly, it remains unclear if this stiffness is related to decreased ankle joint dorsiflexion mobility, and further if limb dominance affects this relationship.
