Background/Objectives: Data from clinical trials showing the non-inferiority of early salvage radiotherapy were recently incorporated into societal guideline statements. However, questions remain regarding ideal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) criteria for salvage, and how to apply these findings to pathologic lymph node-positive (pN+) disease. We investigated variance in management of clinically localized prostate cancer found to have high-risk features after radical prostatectomy. Methods: We retrospectively identified patients from May 2015 to January 2024 utilizing a multi-institutional, regional collaborative database. As the population of individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) continues to grow in South Dakota and across the United States, healthcare systems face increasing challenges in providing equitable care. This study evaluates the implementation of an educational module designed to prepare first-year medical students at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM) to work effectively with medical interpreters and patients with LEP. The module included a didactic session, role-play, open discussion, and pre- and post-surveys assessing students’ knowledge, attitudes, preparedness, and perceptions of the educational environment. Stress and neuroinflammation are increasingly recognized as interdependent processes that contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders. This study investigates the bidirectional relationship between stress exposure and neuroimmune activation, focusing on the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and behavioral outcomes in rodent models. Using the learned helplessness (LH) paradigm, the authors demonstrate that stress-induced neuroinflammation, particularly elevated IL-1β expression in the hypothalamus, is associated with susceptibility to maladaptive behaviors. The immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (CsA) was shown to attenuate stress-induced expression of neuroinflammatory markers, including IL-1β, IL-6, and CRF. Furthermore, direct intracerebroventricular administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a TLR4 agonist, induced LH-like behavioral …

Background: Wide awake hand surgery has allowed many hand procedures to be moved out of the operating room and into minor procedure rooms while increasing efficiency, maintaining safety, and reducing both patient and hospital costs. The goal of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction and postoperative complications of wide-awake local anesthesia with no tourniquet procedures performed in a community-based hospital procedure room.

Methods: A total of 786 patients underwent 948 elective hand procedures in a hospital procedure room. At the conclusion of their surgeries, the patients were surveyed regarding their satisfaction. Following surgery, patients were evaluated for postoperative complications …

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) plays a crucial role in maintaining aging and critical infrastructure, supporting applications such as smart cities and digital twinning. These applications demand machine learning models capable of processing large volumes of real-time sensor data at the network edge. However, existing approaches often neglect the challenges of deploying machine learning models at the edge or are constrained by vendor-specific platforms. The purpose of this project was to explore whether and how short- and long-term effects of “Brain Games” were tempered by demographic variables, including cognitive self-efficacy and socioeconomic factors. The Russian Civil War (1917-1922), fought between Bolshevik and anti-Bolshevik factions, was one of the most pivotal conflicts of the 20th century. It led directly to the rise of the world’s first socialist state, the Soviet Union, which for decades was at the forefront of the international communist movement and a major global power until its collapse in 1991, around 70 years after its founding. Passive fishing gear is a threat to the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). The spatio-temporal persistence of this threat and its impacts on M. temminckii populations has not been quantified. I quantified the density of passive fishing gear and the demographic parameters of M. temminckii along a fishing pressure gradient in East Texas streams. Most gear was abandoned and illegally deployed, with densities varying seasonally. Detectability of passive fishing gear declined with increasing gear age, water depth, and volume, but increased with increasing precipitation. Macrochelys temminckii catch per unit effort, abundance, and survival was lower at sites with …

The beef industry plays a vital role in global agriculture, with carcass quality and consumer preference being key determinants of market success. This thesis examines predictive modeling techniques for estimating the Total Score of beef carcasses, a composite measure representing yield and quality, primarily used by the Nebraska Cattlemen Association. Using data from the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Foundation Retail Value Steer Challenge (2000–2023), the study compares the performance of First Order Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) with three machine learning techniques: K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM).

The rapid growth of multi-omics datasets and the wealth of biological knowledge necessitates the development of effective methods for their integration. Such methods are essential for building predictive models and identifying drug targets based on a limited number of samples. We propose a framework called GNNRAI for the supervised integration of multi-omics data with biological priors represented as knowledge graphs. Our framework leverages graph neural networks (GNNs) to model the correlation structures among features from high-dimensional 'omics data, which reduces the effective dimensions in data and enables us to analyze thousands of genes simultaneously using hundreds of samples. Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a common cause of autism spectrum symptoms. The genetic mutation results in multiple molecular alterations that are hypothesized to negatively impact neural circuit development although the nature of any functional neural dynamic consequences remain unclear. Therefore, the characteristics of hippocampal-prefrontal (H-PFC) network dysfunction were investigated in a rat model of FXS. FMR-KO and control rats underwent behavioral tests assessing sociability, memory, and anxiety to validate and replicate previously recognized deficits. As climate-related extreme events intensify across the globe, governments, practitioners, and communities have focused on reducing vulnerability and building resilience. However, debates persist about the validity, differences, and similarities between social vulnerability and resilience indices. This study combines the Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) (26 indicators) and the Baseline Resilience Indicators for Communities (BRIC) (52 indicators) to assess the Portland Metro region using ACS (2016–2020) and 2020 Census data. Through hotspot analysis, Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression, we identify key drivers as well as areas of convergence and divergence between the two indices. This study examines how narrative point of view influences character identification and parasocial romantic feelings in fan fiction. In order to conduct this research, an experiment was conducted in which participants read fan fiction about their chosen media figure (celebrity or fictional character) written in one of three perspectives: first-person self-insert, third-person self-insert, or third-person original character. Participants then responded to a series of questions regarding identification and physical and emotional parasocial romantic attraction. Primary cilia are hair-like structured cell organelles functioning as cellular antennae with chemosensory and mechanosensory roles. Dysfunction of cilia results in ciliopathies, including renovascular diseases (polycystic kidneys, hypertension, aneurysm), mental impedances (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia), metabolic diseases (obesity, developmental skeleton defects), blindness, and so on. With a diameter of 150 nm, cilia can be cleaved, released and circulated in the body as injury biomarkers. We here assessed the potential use of isolated cilia as a novel delivery vehicle. Cilia were isolated from renal epithelial cells, and a specific-targeting chemotherapeutic was designed on the cilia. The data show a remarkable …

Focused attention and open monitoring are two types of mindfulness meditation, which emphasizes the importance of present moment awareness while meditating. Both approaches can be done while sitting or walking. While research has explored the correlation between mindfulness meditation type and posture type, it remains unknown how a combination of mindfulness mediation type and posture type impacts self-compassion levels.
