Development An Experimental Method To Investigate Hydrodynamic Drag, Serkan Türkmen, Mehmet Atlar, Irma Yeginbayeva

Seatific Journal

Newcastle University [UNEW] has enhanced the test section of their existing water channel facility. The new measurement section is utilized to measure pressure drop (and hence frictional drag) across a standard flat test panel (length=0.6 m; width=0.22 m). The panel can be tested as cleanly coated as well as exposed to light biofilm growth. Based on measured pressure gradients, the skin friction coefficients of these surfaces are calculated and compared with other well-established methods (i.e., measuring the boundary layer of similar surfaces using a [LDV] system in UNEW’s Emerson Cavitation Tunnel [ECT], to evaluate the pressure drop methodology. This paper …

The Dynamics Of Human Society Evolution: An Energetics Approach, Ram Chandra Poudel, Jon G. Mcgowan

Seatific Journal

Human society is an open system that evolves by coupling with various known and unknown (energy) fluxes. How do these dynamics unfold precisely? Energetics may provide further insights. We expand on Navier-Stokes’ approach to study non-equilibrium dynamics in a field that evolves over time. Based on social fi eld th eory, an induction of th e cl assical fie ld theories, we define social force, social energy, and the Hamiltonian of an individual in society. The equations for the evolution of an individual and society are sketched out based on the time-dependent Hamiltonian that includes power dynamics. We demonstrate in …

Computational Prediction Of Hydrodynamic Coefficients For Heave Motion, Ferdi Çakıcı, Emre Kahramanoğlu, Süleyman Duman, Ahmet Dursun Alkan

Seatific Journal

In this study, the hydrodynamic coefficients associated with heave motion are obtained by using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach. The well-known Wigley hull is selected for the calculations of uncoupled added mass and damping coefficients (A33, B33) in deep water. Numerical simulations are performed for six different oscillation frequencies at the Froude number 0.3. First, the 3D ship model is forced in the heave direction with certain frequencies and then the hydrodynamic coefficients are computed with the help of Fourier series expansion. Numerical results are compared with those obtained by the experiments and strip theory. The verification and validation study …

Enhanced Image Retrieval Under Scene Changes For Indoor Localization Using 3d Gaussian Splatting And Object Masking, Jongwon Lee, Hongsheng Yu, Chao Guo, Fengtao Fan

Defensive Publications Series

We propose a method for image retrieval in indoor scenes that are subject to perceptual changes caused by the temporal replacement of common household objects. To address this challenge, we propose a method that masks out these dynamic regions in either the query or database images, allowing retrieval based on the static scene elements. Additionally, we augment the database by rendering images from unseen viewpoints using 3D Gaussian splatting, thereby making candidate matches more likely to be retrieved from an augmented database. Each design choice is supported by the corresponding supporting experiments. Through evaluation on a dataset collected in several …

Defensive Publications Series

Video understanding using multimodal large language models (LLMs) includes recognizing objects, actions, scenes, and extracting meaningful insights from video streams. To reduce computational burden, a subset of frames sampled from the video are fed to the LLM. However, this can reduce the accuracy of LLM inference when the video includes salient information in a small set of frames and is wasteful when the video has slow-moving scenes. This disclosure describes a dynamic subsampling technique that can be used to select the most salient frames with a higher likelihood. Specifically, attention-guided frame selection, 3D convolutional feature extraction, and entropy-based subspace projection …
