The annual fish catch of Lake Manzalah, the most Fertile and largest natural lake in Egypt, in the thirties had been satisfying:34.2% of total fish demand in Egypt. But due to its nature (as any capture open industry, free entry, common property, the lake in the beginning of the new century had been deteriorating due mainly to spread of out-law intruders, encroachments, and several types of pollutions. Water area of the lake decreased from 3150km² to504km² now. Fish catch drastically dropped from 74 thousand tons in 2000 to about 37 thousand tons in 2007.National responsible parties were forced to interfere …

Topic Shift Detection And Triggering In Natural Dialogue Systems: A Lightweight Approach, Rohith Perumandla

This research address a key challenge in dialogue system: enabling the proactive, human-like shifting using lightweight approaching using MobileBERT (~25M) model was proposed and fine-tuned for topic shift detection, augmented with liguistic featuers for for topic trigger detection. Despite its smaller size (~25M parameters), the MobileBERT-based system achieved competitive results (F1 = 74.16%,) compared to the much larger XLNet model (~110M parameters, F1 = 79.95%), while offering greater efficiency. The topic trigger module, combining MobileBERT with linguistic features, further demonstrated effective performance (F1 = 71.61%).

Bilingual students often face challenges in mathematics not due to a lack of ability, but because of linguistic barriers that hinder their understanding of math-specific terminology and consequently their problem-solving language ability. This project addresses that issue through the development of a mobile application designed to support English language acquisition in the context of mathematics for Spanish-speaking students. Rather than teaching mathematical concepts directly, the app focuses on vocabulary, syntax, and contextual comprehension through scaffolded lessons, gamified elements, and an integrated AI chatbot.

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in overall health, yet its impact on dental health, particularly dental caries, remains underexplored. Older adults are at an increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency and dental disease, but the relationship between these two factors is not well understood. This study examines the association between serum vitamin B12 levels and dental health in older adults using data from the NHANES 2011–2014 cycles.

Puberty is a near-universal experience among adolescents, and yet rarely have researchers considered the racialized contexts and salience it has, for girls of color. Using the phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory (PVEST), this study examines the relation between pubertal timing, body esteem, racial discrimination and ethnic racial identity (ERI) components (affirmation, exploration, resolution) among adolescent girls of color (n = 218, Mage = 15.7, U.S. sample). Results showed that higher body esteem predicted greater ERI exploration and resolution, particularly for girls with average or late pubertal timing. Additionally, racial discrimination was linked to higher ERI exploration and resolution only …

Purpose

Presented in this paper is a mixed methods pilot study that analyzes the Peace Leadership Development Curriculum (PLDC). The PLDC was designed to teach integral peace leadership concepts embedded in the areas of Innerwork, Community, Knowledge and Environment to students and community peace leaders. Analyzed herein is the impact of the curriculum in terms of participants’ understanding of leadership topics, the frequency in which they utilize these practices, and their perceptions of their importance for peace leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

Study methods include a pre- and post-survey with Likert-scale questions and open-ended response questions.

SARS-CoV-2 encodes numerous virulence factors, yet their precise mechanisms of action remain unknown. We provide evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural protein 15 (nsp15) enhances viral virulence by suppressing the production of viral double-stranded (dsRNA), a potent inducer of antiviral signaling. The viral variants lacking nsp15 endoribonuclease activity elicited higher innate immune responses and exhibited reduced replication in human stem cell-derived lung alveolar type II epithelial cells, as well as in the lungs of infected hamsters. Consistently, these variants caused significantly less weight loss and mortality compared to wild-type (WT) virus in K18-hACE2 mice. Mechanistically, the cells infected with nsp15 mutants …

The United States invests billions of dollars annually to perform stream restoration projects, yet few studies have investigated the effects this ecosystem manipulation has on nutrient cycling and associated water quality. Water quality improvement remains a substantial motivation for mitigating catchment-scale disturbances, especially in urban streams. Various urban land use practices impact the transfer and transport of nutrients such as soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonium, and nitrate plus nitrite from land into the streams and rivers. Prior research suggests that the effectiveness of retrieval practice may be moderated by response format: overt retrieval (e.g., typing a response) outperforms covert retrieval (e.g., mentally recalling a response) for complex materials like definitions, but both forms of retrieval are equally effective for simple materials like single words. These differences are explained by the retrieval dynamics hypothesis, which posits that retrieving a single unit of information is relatively automatic and easy, while retrieving multiple interconnected units (e.g., definitions) is more demanding and may not be exhaustive when done covertly.
