This paper investigates upgrading aging three-phase Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machines (PMaSynRMs) into multiphase configurations—specifically six- and five-phase windings—without modifying the existing stator or rotor laminations. This retrofit supports circular economic principles by extending machine life and reducing material waste and cost. Four configurations are examined: the original three-phase winding, asymmetrical six-phase winding, symmetrical six-phase winding, and five-phase winding. The feasibility of rewinding existing three-phase stators is explored for different slot/pole combinations. Balanced rewound five-phase windings are feasible only when the stator's slot/pole ratio is greater than or equal to 9. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical rewound six-phase windings are …

Purpose: Dr. Richard Hill performed pioneering work in the field of radiation-induced normal tissue injury to the lung including noninvasive imaging studies aimed at identifying imaging biomarkers of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). RILI is a life-threatening toxicity of radiation exposure relevant to both cancer patients undergoing thoracic radiation therapy (RT) and victims of accidental radiation exposure. The ability to detect RILI noninvasively has the potential to guide treatment planning for RT and, in the case of victims of acute radiation exposures, inform the decision to start mitigative therapies. Accelerator beam exit windows are designed to withstand intense radiation and mechanical stress while preserving beam transmission and structural integrity. This dissertation explores the structural and mechanical responses of pure metals and high-entropy alloys (HEAs), in both bulk and thin-film forms, under high-dose electron beam (e-beam) irradiation to identify optimal materials for next-generation accelerator exit windows. Monte Carlo simulations using FLUKA, conducted at Jefferson Lab, revealed that amongst Ni, Ti, Cr, and V, Ni exhibits the highest power dissipation, while Ti depicts the lowest power dissipation, with Cr and V demonstrating intermediate characteristics. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the theoretical foundations of the factorization theorems that involve transverse quark and gluon momentum distributions, and to better understand the interface between foundational questions and phenomenological applications. Many of these applications involve using transverse parton momentum dependent (TMD) correlation functions as tools for probing the complex nonperturbative structures of the hadrons.

We first introduce the concepts of collinear and TMD factorization in a toy-model theory and, by leveraging the comparative simplicity of such a model, we test the range of validity and limitations of the factorization approach. At the same time, …

Significance: Over 80% of cervical cancer cases occur in lower-to-middle income countries (LMIC’s). This is partly because current screening techniques lack affordability, accessibility, and/or reliability for use in LMIC’s.

Aim: To develop an optical technique for cervical cancer screening that is affordable, accessible, and reliable for use in LMIC’s.

Approach: We developed a portable diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) system, which costs < $2500 USD to manufacture, and employs a Raspberry Pi to extract the absorption (μa) and reduced scattering (μ's) coefficients of biological tissue. Ireland’s population age profile is forecasted to increase over the coming decades which will have implications for the care responsibilities of families and the state. However, there is a paucity of quality elder care in Ireland. Elder care worker co-operatives could contribute to meeting this shortfall in supply. This study examines the impact of co-owned elder care provision in Ireland. A case study approach is employed with the Great Care Co-op (GCC) being the case selected. Search For Extremely-High-Energy Neutrinos And First Constraints On The Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic-Ray Proton Fraction With Icecube, Karen Andeen

We present a search for the diffuse extremely-high-energy neutrino flux using 12.6 years of IceCube data. The nonobservation of neutrinos with energies well above 10 PeV constrains the all-flavor neutrino flux at 1018  eV to a level of 𝐸2⁢Φ𝜈𝑒+𝜈𝜇+𝜈𝜏≃10−8  GeV cm−2 s−1 sr−1, the most stringent limit to date. Using these data, we constrain the proton fraction of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above ≃30  EeV to be  ≲70% (at 90% CL) if the cosmological evolution of the sources is comparable to or stronger than the star formation rate. The New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) turns 50 this year. The statute has changed only a little in the last half century, but it continues to be a font of litigation. The courts decided 43 cases under SEQRA in 2024.

Implementation of SEQRA is also raising policy issues. The legislature is considering whether to amend SEQRA to speed up affordable housing projects, and the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is drafting regulations concerning the role SEQRA should play in advancing environmental justice.

Claims for reparations in international law commonly reflect two competing visions--one transformative, the other corrective. The transformative vision looks to reparations to end the long tail of injustices that are associated with large-scale historic harms. The corrective vision is more confined; it focuses on repairing specific, legally cognizable harms and returning the agents or entities involved as closely as possible to the status quo ante. We argue in this Essay that these two visions have distinct conceptual logics, even though they often overlap in practice, and that the transformative vision cannot carry the burdens that are placed on it.

A paradox exists at the core of class actions. They were designed to perform a valuable function, protecting and compensating individuals who would not otherwise have legal recourse, yet in practice they have effectively silenced and disenfranchised class members, leaving them unaware and uninformed of litigation commenced on their behalf, the nature of their potential claims, and the damages they may seek. This Note explores the intersection of cultural heritage law and U.S. property law through the lens of Republic of Turkey v. Christie’s Inc., a significant case involving the contested ownership of the ancient Anatolian “Stargazer” figurine. The Note explores how longstanding doctrines of property and the equitable defense of laches interact with international legal frameworks and patrimony laws aimed at preserving cultural heritage material. This Article summarizes findings from a civil liberties evaluation of Truleo, an AI-powered analytics platform designed to automate the review of police body-worn camera (BWC) footage. It includes a summary of how Truleo’s platform works, policy choices made by the company, and our assessment of safeguards and risks of the platform from a civil liberties perspective. This Article also offers a series of recommendations for policymakers considering the adoption of Truleo or similar technologies. Formaldehyde has been used to control microbial contamination in commercial hatch cabinets. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of spray application of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens solid state fermentation products on the microbial load in the hatch cabinet, pioneer colonization of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), and early performance compared to formaldehyde fumigation. An environmental challenge model was used to simulate the microbial bloom to compare the application of two B. amyloliquefaciens strains (MCR002, MCR009) to formaldehyde fumigation. Deep learning (DL) has become a powerful tool for solving complex problems, but developing DL models typically requires vast datasets, high computational resources, and expert knowledge—barriers that limit accessibility. Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) addresses this challenge by allowing resource-rich providers to deliver pre-trained DL models as services. However, privacy concerns arise: clients hesitate to share sensitive data, while providers protect their proprietary models. To address this, privacy-preserving MLaaS integrates cryptographic techniques into DL computations, as seen in frameworks like Cryptonets, SecureML, GAZELLE, CrypTFlow2, Cheetah, and BOLT.
