Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are chemical changes that occur after translation and play a key role in regulating protein function and cellular processes. Their dysregulation is associated with various diseases, making accurate prediction of PTM sites essential for understanding cellular mechanisms and informing therapeutic strategies. This work focuses on the computational prediction of two biologically significant PTMs, namely succinylation and O-GlcNAcylation, utilizing recent advances in protein language models (pLMs). Drawing an analogy to natural languages, amino acids are treated as words and sequences as sentences, allowing pLMs to capture contextual dependencies within protein sequences. Time series forecasting plays a crucial role in various fields, ranging from financial markets and predictive maintenance in industrial settings to healthcare analytics. Traditionally, statistical approaches were employed primarily for univariate forecasting tasks, but modern applications often require robust solutions capable of handling complex, multivariate, noisy, and non-stationary data. Current state-of-the-art solutions predominantly utilize transformer-based models, which demand significant computational resources, limiting their practicality, especially in resource-constrained environments. Although emerging research demonstrates that male athletes outperform female athletes before puberty, the effect of these sex-related advantages on ordinal ranking of top performances remains unclear.

Objectives

Among overall top performances of youth track and swimming athletes, we aimed to determine 1) the proportional number of male compared with female athletes represented and 2) at what age females are no longer represented.

Hypertension prevalence is lower in women than men. Enhanced renal sodium (Na+) handling in females has been implicated in sex-differences in hypertension. Epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) is a key contributor to Na+ homeostasis and is regulated by estrogen. Recent evidence suggests G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) evokes a female-specific natriuresis that involves endothelin-1 (ET-1). ET-1 has been shown to downregulate ENaC activity, but whether GPER1 regulates ENaC to modulate natriuresis is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that renal GPER1 functionally interacts with ENaC to promote natriuresis in a sex-specific manner. RNAscope confirmed co-expression of GPER1 and ENaC in rat …

Objective: Many epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) risk factors relate to sex hormones. The association between these factors and the expression of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor-α (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR) in tumors is unknown.

Method: We linked epidemiologic, AR/ER/PR tumor expression, and survival data from 19 studies in the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC; 4762 cases, 20,888 controls) and the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis (OTTA) consortium (5737 cases). We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) between hormonally-linked factors and tumor AR/ER/PR expression using polytomous logistic regression. Macrophages infiltrate solid tumors and either support survival or induce cancer cell death through phagocytosis or cytotoxicity. To uncover regulators of macrophage cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, we perform two co-culture CRISPR screens using CAR-macrophages targeting different tumor associated antigens. Both identify ATG9A as an important regulator of this cytotoxic activity. In vitro and in vivo, ATG9A depletion in cancer cells sensitizes them to macrophage-mediated killing. Proteomic and lipidomic analyses reveal that ATG9A deficiency impairs the cancer cell response to macrophage-induced plasma membrane damage through defective lysosomal exocytosis, reduced ceramide production, and disrupted caveolar endocytosis. This Case Comment argues that by prescribing timelines for the president and the governors to grant or withhold assent to bills in The State of Tamil Nadu v the Governor of Tamil Nadu, decided in April 2025, the Supreme Court did not exceed its constitutional role, as argued by some critics. Instead, it applied established administrative law principles—relevant considerations, natural justice, and absence of mala fides—to the specific power of granting or withholding assent to bills. Religion is an organized system of spiritual beliefs, practices, and rituals that often involve a sense of the divine (Schilbrack, 2022). Diaspora By Another Name: The Making Of Refugees In Cold War China, Jiaqi M. Liu, Clare Xiaoqian Wan

By examining China’s refugee policies from 1949 to 1982, this article demonstrates how the Chinese state redefined “return” and “refugee” to serve shifting political objectives. While China is often perceived as a source, rather than a host, of asylum seekers, it hosted over 320,000 displaced migrants—primarily ethnic Chinese from Southeast Asia—during the Cold War. Through a systematic discourse analysis of 382 People’s Daily articles, we identify four state narratives—diaspora, diplomatic tool, ideological sanctuary, and legal duty—that structured how China labeled displaced migrants, interpreted their sentiments, and determined their settlement. This article discusses the nexus between Raymond Williams’ structure of feelings and the reproduction of military masculinity as cultural citizenship. By placing the gaze upon National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces as a rite of passage into manhood, this work uses representations of the military in popular culture and souvenirs/ephemera to elucidate how structures of feeling are calibrated as masculinity the state wants its citizenry to internalize. We explore how the fundamental problems in quantum molecular dynamics can be modeled using classical simulators (emulators) of quantum computers and the actual quantum hardware available to us today. The list of problems we tackle includes propagation of a free wave packet, vibration of a harmonic oscillator, and tunneling through a barrier. Each of these problems starts with the initial wave packet setup. Although Qiskit provides a general method for initializing wave functions, in most cases it generates deep quantum circuits. While these circuits perform well on noiseless simulators, they suffer from excessive noise on quantum hardware. To overcome this …

This paper investigates upgrading aging three-phase Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machines (PMaSynRMs) into multiphase configurations—specifically six- and five-phase windings—without modifying the existing stator or rotor laminations. This retrofit supports circular economic principles by extending machine life and reducing material waste and cost. Four configurations are examined: the original three-phase winding, asymmetrical six-phase winding, symmetrical six-phase winding, and five-phase winding. The feasibility of rewinding existing three-phase stators is explored for different slot/pole combinations. Purpose: Dr. Richard Hill performed pioneering work in the field of radiation-induced normal tissue injury to the lung including noninvasive imaging studies aimed at identifying imaging biomarkers of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). RILI is a life-threatening toxicity of radiation exposure relevant to both cancer patients undergoing thoracic radiation therapy (RT) and victims of accidental radiation exposure. The ability to detect RILI noninvasively has the potential to guide treatment planning for RT and, in the case of victims of acute radiation exposures, inform the decision to start mitigative therapies. Accelerator beam exit windows are designed to withstand intense radiation and mechanical stress while preserving beam transmission and structural integrity. This dissertation explores the structural and mechanical responses of pure metals and high-entropy alloys (HEAs), in both bulk and thin-film forms, under high-dose electron beam (e-beam) irradiation to identify optimal materials for next-generation accelerator exit windows. Monte Carlo simulations using FLUKA, conducted at Jefferson Lab, revealed that amongst Ni, Ti, Cr, and V, Ni exhibits the highest power dissipation, while Ti depicts the lowest power dissipation, with Cr and V demonstrating intermediate characteristics. Unraveling Nonperturbative Qcd With Transverse Momentum Hadronic Structures, Tommaso Rainaldi

The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the theoretical foundations of the factorization theorems that involve transverse quark and gluon momentum distributions, and to better understand the interface between foundational questions and phenomenological applications. Many of these applications involve using transverse parton momentum dependent (TMD) correlation functions as tools for probing the complex nonperturbative structures of the hadrons.

We first introduce the concepts of collinear and TMD factorization in a toy-model theory and, by leveraging the comparative simplicity of such a model, we test the range of validity and limitations of the factorization approach. At the same time, …

Significance: Over 80% of cervical cancer cases occur in lower-to-middle income countries (LMIC’s). This is partly because current screening techniques lack affordability, accessibility, and/or reliability for use in LMIC’s.

Aim: To develop an optical technique for cervical cancer screening that is affordable, accessible, and reliable for use in LMIC’s.

Approach: We developed a portable diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) system, which costs < $2500 USD to manufacture, and employs a Raspberry Pi to extract the absorption (μa) and reduced scattering (μ's) coefficients of biological tissue.
