A Unified Dnn Weight Compression Framework Using Reweighted Optimization Methods, Mengchen Fan, Tianyun Zhang, Xiaolong Ma, Jiacheng Guo, Zheng Zhan, Et. Al.

Computer Science Faculty Publications

To address the large model sizes and intensive computation requirements of deep neural networks (DNNs), weight pruning techniques have been proposed and generally fall into two categories: static regularization-based pruning and dynamic regularization-based pruning. However, the static method often leads to either complex operations or reduced accuracy, while the dynamic method requires extensive time to adjust parameters to maintain accuracy while achieving effective pruning. In this paper, we propose a unified robustness-aware framework for DNN weight pruning that dynamically updates regularization terms bounded by the designated constraint. This framework can generate both non-structured sparsity and different kinds of structured sparsity, …

Criminal legal systems around the world rely heavily on defendants foregoing their right to trial and pleading guilty. However, legal scholars, social scientists, and practitioners have identified and empirically examined numerous problems with pleas, such as the high potential for coercion, innocent defendants falsely pleading guilty, and undue incentives in exchange for accepting plea offer. In this article, leading guilty plea experts (practitioners and researchers) were asked to identify what they considered to be the most urgent questions surrounding pleas. Across nine commentaries, three primary themes emerged. First were calls for increased transparency in pleas, specific to rules of discovery …

Predisposed: Race, Disability, And Death Investigations, Britney Wilson

Articles & Chapters

Disability, preexisting conditions, or underlying conditions might seem like uncontroversial factors to cite when determining an individual’s cause of death. However, many death investigators have also cited these conditions in deaths caused by state violence or neglect. For example, a 2021 study found that medical examiners cited sickle cell trait, a gene mutation, as a cause or significant factor in the deaths of forty-seven Black people who died in police custody in the past twenty-five years. Sickle cell trait is a relatively common and benign trait disproportionately found in Black people in the United States. It is also distinct from …

How Privilege Affects Reactions To Men's Femininity, Matthew G. Nielson, Brittany Romanello, Alexa Martin-Storey

Sociology and Criminology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research aimed to explore social responses to men's femininity, with particular attention paid to the impact of privilege as detailed in the framework of hybrid masculinities. Generally, men's femininity is met with condemnation, but those with more privilege may have more leeway than those with less. Additionally, cultural attitudes may be evolving to be less homonegative, which may alter the reception of queer men's femininity. From interviews with 30 young adult men in a US Southwestern city, we found evidence for compensatory masculinity privilege - allowing femininity based on other successful enactments of masculinity - and 'gay allowance' - …

First Confirmed Nebraska Breeding Record Of The Common Raven (Corvus Corax) Since The 19th Century, Eugene A. Huryn, Jacob C. Cooper

Nebraska Bird Review

In Nebraska, the Common Raven was likely widespread prior to 1900, being codistributed with the American Bison (Bison bison). Records in this time are spotty, but consistent. Thomas Say reported a nearly fledged brood—the only confirmed breeding record in this period—at Fort Calhoun in Washington County on May 12, 1820. A Common Raven was collected at Fort Randall, on the Missouri River just north of the modern Nebraska–South Dakota border, in the fall of 1857 during the Lieutenant Warren Expeditions. Another specimen, now lost, was collected by J. B. Hasty in 1899 in Arapahoe, Furnas County. Bruner et …

Summer Field Report, June–July 2025, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

I have mentioned previously the breeding categories that are available to observers in eBird checklists. This database is becoming more comprehensive and useful, and I encourage observers to use this eBird feature.

Usefulness of Merlin-derived checklists continues to be an issue. As an example, Merlin seems to love White-winged Doves; there were 52 undocumented Merlin reports of this species this summer, no doubt some correctly identified and acceptable if observers had taken a minute to add even minimal observation details to support Merlin’s identifications.

A vexing issue for me is determining the status of midsummer (i.e. between spring and fall …

Role Of Axial Ligation In The Conformational And Redox Properties Of Cytochromes, Morgan Elisabeth Reik Sep 2025

Role Of Axial Ligation In The Conformational And Redox Properties Of Cytochromes, Morgan Elisabeth Reik

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Heme proteins are crucial for many biological processes including respiration, transport, and catalysis. As electron carriers containing redox active metal centers, their electron transfer (ET) properties are tuned by the protein environment, wherein the reduction potential can be influenced by factors such as heme solvent accessibility, charge, the presence of neighboring redox centers, as well as the identity of the axial ligand. The axial ligand in heme proteins is especially crucial for tuning the electronic properties of the metal center, as it affects the driving force of the reaction. However, the redox properties of heme proteins are further modulated by …

Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of Novel Resilient Smart Shear Keys For Speedy Functional Recovery Of Highway Bridges After Extreme Events, Xinzhe Yuan, Jun Han, Jian Zhong, Haibin Zhang, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sacrificial shear keys in small-to-medium-span highway bridges mainly provide lateral support to the bridge superstructure under extreme events such as earthquake and/or tsunami. However, such support could lead to irreparable harm to important bridge elements like abutments and bent caps (base), delaying the functional recovery of bridges in the aftermath. In addition, existing designs of the shear key primarily emphasize resistant capacity but overlook resilience. This study introduces a new sliding, modular, adaptive, replaceable, and two-dimensional (SMART) shear key designed to enhance the resilience of I-girder highway bridges. The SMART shear key has three primary goals: 1) enabling the rapid …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Steel slag with high aluminum (Al) content significantly delays the early hydration of cement when used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). To address this challenge, this study investigates the effects of gypsum (Gy) and sodium sulfate (SS) additions on the performance of cement pastes with 30 % high-Al ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) slag. The mechanical properties, hydration kinetics, phase evolution, as well as the early-age hydration mechanism were explored. The results indicate that C3S hydration is substantially inhibited under high-Al conditions, mainly attributed to the rapid dissolution and reaction of reactive aluminates (particularly mayenite) in the slag. Both Gy …
