Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental condition in U.S. children, affecting roughly 8-11.4% of children aged 3 to 17 (approximately 7 million total), with boys (13%) being diagnosed more frequently than girls (7%) (Wolraich et al., 2019). The diagnosis is characterized by recurrent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning, learning, or social relationships (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2026). Approximately 70-77% of these children receive some form of treatment (Danielson et al., 2024), and 25-70% of families with children on ADHD pharmaceuticals utilize medication vacations (also referred to as drug holidays), with …

Cellular phone and other mobile device usage has become a ubiquitous aspect of childhood and adolescence, with recent studies reporting that by age 8, 23% of U.S. children have a cell phone (Mann et al., 2025). Yet, parents and caregivers express concerns regarding their child’s device usage, identifying time spent on social media, impact on mental health, and online content consumption as primary concerns (Mann et al., 2025). The discussion surrounding vaccination requirements for summer camps is not new; however, the COVID-19 pandemic and recent measles outbreaks brought with them a renewed energy to the debate. This is especially true for pediatric oncology camps, where campers are frequently immunocompromised due to their treatment for cancer. Seeking to best protect their campers and staff from preventable illnesses, multiple member camps of the Children’s Oncology Camping Association (COCA) asked about the vaccination policies and procedures of other COCA member camps to help guide their practices.
