Using a comparative historical-documentary approach and a purposive lexical sample, this article compares the transition from Arabic-based writing to Latin-script orthographies in Malay-Indonesian and Turkish. It argues that ``alphabet reform'' does not adequately describe the two histories unless the component processes of change are distinguished. In Malay-Indonesian, Roman writing circulated before the twentieth century, was standardized under colonial rule in 1901, gained institutional functions alongside Jawi, and was revised after independence in 1947 and 1972. In Turkey, decades of debate preceded the concentrated, state-led replacement of Ottoman writing in 1928. This study investigates the carbonation of fly ash derived from fluidized bed boilers as a method for stabilizing reactive calcium oxide (CaO) while recovering the exothermic heat released during the process. Grounded in Beard and Wilson’s (2018) learning waves framework, we argue that outreach offers predictable experiential phases, guided reflection, and supportive mentoring that collectively foster identity development and career readiness. Drawing on the AIE: STEMPLOS program, we illustrate how tiered mentoring, intentionally designed outreach activities, and reflective tools such as the Birkman® assessment help scholars articulate strengths, understand communication and work‑style preferences, and navigate real‑world professional contexts. Reformers face two barriers in persuading voters to support institutional changes—first, in communicating the impact of extant institutions on unwanted outcomes; and, secondly, of persuading them to support a different institutional solution.
