Macroscopic Failure Characteristics And Seepage Pattern Of Damaged Goaf-Side Coal Pillars Under Confined Water Accumulation, Liu Weitao, Chen Dongqi, Liu Yuben, Du Yanhui, Zhao Jiyuan
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background The method of supporting roadways using small coal pillars has been widely applied in China. As a result, the stability of goaf-side coal pillars affects mining safety. Resulting from multiple disturbance effects, coal pillars tend to contain various types of damage fractures. The confined water environment in goaves with water accumulation might cause the instability failure of damaged goaf-side coal pillars. Methods To investigate the impacts of the damage fracture structure on coal stability, this study introduced the concept of relatively stable initial damage fractures. Based on the theory of damage mechanics, this study constructed hydro-mechanical-damage (HMD) coupling models …

Pseudo-2d Mt Inversion Technique For Small-Frame Tem And Its Application In Advance Geological Prediction, Han Ziqiang, Wanma Longzhi, Li Xiangfeng, Yang Yongqiang, Zhu Xiaoming, Luo Chengxian, Tang Li
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective To address the bottlenecks of low computational efficiency and impracticality of multi-dimensional inversion in the advance geological prediction based on the transient electromagnetic method (TEM), this study developed a pseudo-two-dimensional (2D) magnetotelluric (MT) inversion technique for small-frame TEM based on time-frequency transformation. Methods First, this study corroborated the significant similarity between the late-time apparent resistivity derived using small-frame TEM and the Cagniard apparent resistivity in the MT method under the parameters commonly used in advance geological prediction. Then, the optimal time-frequency transformation coefficient (CTF) was introduced to achieve a rapid conversion from the late-time apparent resistivity …

Tariffs And Trade Deficits, Lorenzo Caliendo, Samuel Kortum, Fernando Parro
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We develop a dynamic multi-country Ricardian trade model with aggregate uncertainty, where trade imbalances emerge as countries exchange goods and assets. We introduce a method for computing counterfactuals in this setting, which doesn't require specifying the stochastic process of shocks or solving for asset prices. Applying the model to tariff shocks, we quantify their effects on prices, income, spending, and trade imbalances. We find that higher U.S. tariffs reduce the U.S. trade deficit through general equilibrium adjustments, but raise domestic prices and lower real consumption. Our findings highlight that movements in trade imbalances are shaped by the structure of global …

Asia In World Politics Syllabus, Muhammad S. Kabir
Open Educational Resources
The continent of Asia is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world. The continent also hosts some of the oldest interstate conflicts, ranging from disputed borders to nuclear proliferation. This course examines the sources of insecurity and conflict in Asia. The course focuses on several interstate and regional conflicts: the Kashmir Conflict between India and Pakistan, nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula, the South China dispute, and the China-Taiwan relations. Although some of these disputes remain latent as of now, they have the potential to turn into outright regional wars with catastrophic consequences for the region and potentially for …

Boosted Electrochemical Oxidation Of Methanol At Feox/Pd/Au Ternary Nanocatalyst, Ghada El-Nowihy
Chemical Engineering
In this paper, a highly effective catalyst for methanol electrochemical oxidation (MEO) was developed by the sequential deposition of spherical gold nanoparticles (nano-Au) on a glassy carbon (GC) rod’s surface followed by palladium nanoparticles (nano-Pd), then, iron oxide nanoparticles (nano-FeOx) to form FeOx/Pd/Au/GC catalyst. The sequence of catalyst’s layers proved crucial in optimizing its performance towards MEO. Notably, FeOx/Pd/Au/GC electrode produced a remarkable enhancements in the catalytic activity (by 7 times) and stability (approximately 16 fold) when compared to those produced at Pd/GC rod. Additionally, the onset potential for MEO was significantly reduced by approximately 40 mV. Through material and …

Parent Roles Supporting Curriculum And Instruction With Virtual Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Keli Louise Amprey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic created an educational crisis when schools across the United States closed abruptly, requiring parents to assume new roles as facilitators of online learning without adequate preparation. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory, the purpose of this retrospective basic qualitative study was to investigate parents’ perceptions of their roles as instructional and curriculum facilitators for elementary-level students during COVID-19 distance learning. Research questions examined how parents described their roles as online instructional facilitators, what challenges they faced in supporting curriculum and instruction virtually, and what types of support they needed to succeed in their new educational roles during …
Implementing A Questioning Strategy In Teaching Reading Texts In Efl Classes: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed A. Alzahrani Dr.
Implementing A Questioning Strategy In Teaching Reading Texts In Efl Classes: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed A. Alzahrani Dr.
The Qualitative Report
Developed by Beck and McKeown in the 1980s, Questioning the Author (QtA) emphasises active engagement with texts to construct meaning rather than passive information extraction. Despite numerous studies attempting to solve challenges in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, there is a lack of interpretive studies that investigate this issue from the actual field. This exploratory study investigated how EFL teachers' implementation of QtA and their perspectives toward the use of the QtA strategy in teaching reading comprehension in Saudi secondary schools through nine interviews and eighteen classroom observations, analysed thematically. Findings showed that effective QtA use requires …

Moving At Warp Speed Toward Developing The Cyborg Soldier, James Giordano, Diane Dieuliis
Moving At Warp Speed Toward Developing The Cyborg Soldier, James Giordano, Diane Dieuliis
Strategic Insights
This commentary examines how rapidly advancing technologies are reshaping the future of the military warfighter. The convergence of artificial intelligence, neurotechnology, biotechnology, and human-machine interfaces is moving defense innovation toward enhanced or “cyborg” soldiers capable of improved performance, endurance, and decision-making. While these developments promise operational advantages, they also raise serious ethical, legal, and strategic concerns. Questions about autonomy, vulnerability to cyber manipulation, long-term health effects, and international norms must be addressed before such capabilities become widely deployed. The article argues that technological momentum should not outpace governance and doctrine. To ensure responsible innovation, policymakers must develop clear oversight mechanisms …

Student Publications
Background
Low back pain (LBP) is a global health issue that primarily affects underserved communities with limited access to healthcare. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) offers non-pharmacological, hands-on interventions that align with its core principle of holistic care. However, little is known about the feasibility and perception of OMT in rural Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This pilot study assesses the feasibility, effectiveness, and participant perception of osteopathic principles in managing LBP complaints.
Methods
Adult participants experiencing LBP were recruited by the research team during Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (KCUCOM) global health mission trip, following their one-day primary care visit. Pre- …

Using A Realist Informed Qualitative Approach To Elaborate Programme Theory: Experiences From The Feasibility Phase Of The D-Pact Project., Sarah Griffiths, Hannah Wheat, Sarah Morgan-Trimmer, Lauren Weston, Alex Gude, Tomasina Oh, Rod Sheaff, Richard Byng
Peninsula Medical School
Realist approaches to complex health care evaluations are increasingly used and recommended in national evaluationguidelines. However, there remains a paucity of researcher guidance on methods for elaborating and refining programmetheories throughout the stages of a realist evaluation project—from prospective theory development to feasibility work,to full evaluation. We present a step by step worked example of a realist approach to elaborating a programme theory for ahealth care intervention during the feasibility phase of the Dementia PersonAlised care Team. We explain how multiplequalitative methods can be applied to elaborate initial theory, supporting a shift away from a hypothetical explanation, towards a theory …

Through semi- structured interviews and document analysis, ten principals revealed that SEL is not only essential for student and staff well-being but also central to their own leadership development. Findings indicate that …
Decolonizing Links Between International Scholarships And Peace Insights From A Critical Realist Study In Palestine, Anas N. Almassri
Decolonizing Links Between International Scholarships And Peace Insights From A Critical Realist Study In Palestine, Anas N. Almassri
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
In this article, I summarize my doctoral research of the potential contribution of international graduate scholarships to peace in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT). The research challenges predominant explanations of scholarships' contribution to peace on account of advancing human and global capitals and facilitating Western-style liberal-democratic socialization. Within a critical realist paradigm, interview and documentary data from 32 Palestinian scholarship alumni were analyzed in a three-stage process. First, the descriptive findings show that the participants perceive significant gains from scholarships in their academic, career, and multidimensional identity development. Second, the inferential findings demonstrate that these gains represent increased effective ability …
Inaction As Nonformal Reaction: Rethinking Crime Perception In The Era Of Data Breaches, Irnasya Shafira Hadi
Inaction As Nonformal Reaction: Rethinking Crime Perception In The Era Of Data Breaches, Irnasya Shafira Hadi
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This study analyses the Indonesian public’s response to government data breaches and advocates for an expanded defintion of nonformal reactions to crime in the digital context. It argues that existing criminological frameworks, particularly Mustofa’s (2021) model—which views nonformal reactions as active and confrontational behaviours such as demonstrations or vigilantism—should also acknowledge inaction, apathy, and emotional disengagement as valid public reactions. This paper employs a conceptual-qualitative approach, combining an interdisciplinary literature review, interpretive policy analysis of the Personal Data Protection Law, and triangulation with digital behaviour data to develop its analysis. This paper reframes apathy as a significant criminological indicator of …

Is Poverty The Root Of All Crime? Rethinking Criminality Amid Institutional Failure In Madagascar, Ramalina Ranaivo Mikea Manitra
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Madagascar continues to grapple with high levels of poverty and weak institutional capacity, creating conditions conducive to widespread and persistent criminality. This paper aims to examine how structural poverty, institutional failure, and state fragility interact to shape patterns of crime through the lens of criminological theories such as strain theory, social disorganisation, and state-centred criminology. Using a qualitative methodology based on a comprehensive literature review of empirical studies, policy documents, and international reports, the paper explores the socio-economic and institutional dynamics underpinning crime in Madagascar. The findings reveal that poverty-driven crime often arises as a rational response to unmet needs, …

Intersectionality In The Maze Of Oppression: A Feminist Criminology Analysis Of Systematic Vulnerability And Exploitation Of Indonesian Women Trafficked To Cambodia, Reza Anugrah, Lifiana Alanisya Mutaharina
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This study explores the vulnerability of Indonesian women to the crime of human trafficking in Cambodia, analyzing its structural and patriarchal roots. Employing a qualitative methodology through literature review, the paper delineates how socio-economic disparities and limited employment opportunities in Indonesia drive women toward illegal job offers that ultimately result in exploitation. Human trafficking syndicates exploit traditional gender constructs and manipulate identities to entrap victims, even involving women as alleged perpetrators. Criminological and legal analyses reveal a shift toward more complex forms of transnational crime, exacerbated by the use of digital technology. Although the Law of the Republic of Indonesia …

Public Compliance Towards Indonesian National Police (Polri) Authority In The Midst Of A Strained Public-Police Relationship, Ilham Dwi Hatmawan
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Public trust in the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has experienced significant fluctuations due to allegations of misconduct, corruption, and excessive use of force. This study examines the relationship between public trust and compliance with Polri authority, particularly in the context of strained police-community relations. Drawing on procedural justice and restorative regulation theories, the research argues that trust directly influences voluntary compliance and that procedural justice alone is insufficient to repair legitimacy deficits. Instead, a dual model combining procedural fairness with restorative reconciliation, including acknowledgment of past harms and community dialogue is proposed as a more effective strategy for rebuilding trust. …

High-Risk Terrorism Inmate Deradicalization: A Complex And Paradoxical Issue In Nusakambangan, Rahmat Amin Siregar
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Deradicalizing high-risk terrorism inmates is a multifaceted and paradoxical challenge that has not been comprehensively addressed in criminological studies. This research seeks to fill the gaps in previous studies by focusing on the security challenges, personnel difficulties, and prison culture dynamics within super-maximum security facilities in their efforts to deradicalize terrorism inmates. The findings highlight three critical aspects of this complexity. First, the security measures in super-maximum security facilities emphasize the strict implementation of a one-inmate-per-cell system, which minimizes inmate interactions, adheres to high-security standards, and utilizes advanced technological systems. Second, correctional officers face significant challenges, including verbal confrontations from …

Implementation Of Public-Private Partnership Model Towards Ideal Operationalization Of Correctional Institution In Indonesia, Sani Siti Aisyah -
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
The increasing popularity of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in prison or correctional institution development and management is currently often studied from an economic perspective that prioritizes state budget efficiency and is rarely studied from a social perspective that prioritizes benefits for the community in the context of social control. Realizing that PPP has positive potential in the ideal operationalization of correctional institution amidst limited human resources and budget, this study examines various correctional institution PPP models using the correction theory framework. This study was designed as an exploratory qualitative study using interview, document studies, field observations and FGD. This study successfully …

Facilitation Of Focus Groups Towards Conflict Resolution Among Pastoralists And Farmers In Northern Uganda: An Indigenous Relational Approach, Francis Akena Adyanga Dr., Norma Ra Romm Prof., Ambrose Dbins Toolit
The Qualitative Report
In this article we discuss how we explored with participants in a district of Northern Uganda certain land-related conflicts between pastoralists (herdsmen) and farmers. Following the end of the conflict in the civil war in Northern Uganda (1986-2006/7), many pastoralists moved from Central and Western Uganda to Northern Uganda in search for pastures for their animals. This has resulted in tension with the host community of farmers. In recognition of these long-standing conflicts and wishing to contribute to their addressal, in 2021 we set up four focus groups drawing on Indigenous relational practices of conflict resolution. We invoked storytelling and …
